In this video, I will show you how I use my Scan 'n Cut machine.
Amazon has a Cyber Monday Deal on the newer model for less than I paid for mine 5 years ago: amzn.to/3FTxqso *I am an Amazon affiliate and may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. also I am forbidden fon telling you the price of this but the regular price is $50 more than I paid for mine and the sale price is $25 less than I paid for mine on Black Friday 5 years ago:)
You can do many other things with this machine but in all honestly, all I use it for is cutting out my stamped images. It has saved me thousands of dollars on dies and honestly it is quicker than using my crank-style machine especially if I have a full sheet of stamped images. I recommend this machine if you have a place to leave it out and set up and you are not afraid of electronics. It's really easy to use but often I hear of crafters being afraid of these machines. Know yourself:) This has been the best investment in my paper crafting hobby.

Thanks Lindsay! There have been a lot of stamp sets I wanted but either didn't want to pay the price for the matching die or there wasn't one available. My hands cramp really badly when I try to fussy cut AND I stink at it. So...by today I should be the proud owner of the Scan n Cut! I purchased a Cricut about three years ago. I made the sample card that came with the machine, put it in the box and it has been taken out exactly one time after that to go to a class offered locally by one of the big box stores. They gave us a material list and I had to go to three different stores to get everything. Your Cricut and a laptop were required for the class so I schlepped all that out to the store. There were about 12 people in the class and as we started to unpack our stuff at our tables, the instructor told us not to, we didn't need them because she was going to just display everything and walk through how to use Design Space....on a 15" monitor. If I had paid full price I would have demanded my money back. I spend 9-10 hours a day in front of a computer screen for work and I just do not have the patience or desire right now to self-teach myself how to use the doggone application. I'm excited to get my new Brother to do the things I really wanted to do!

You will love the ScanNCut!! I like taking a die shape, scanning it, and resizing it. I can imagine the frustration you had with the class and the need for a laptop, Design space, etc. I told my sister in law that I had no interest in the Silomhouette or Cricut, because I get really frustrated with computers. I wanted no part of it, and was loving my hand crank Cuttlebug. I still use my Cuttlebug more, but I also love my SnC. I have scanned a pattern I to it, resized the objects, and cut out parts for baby quilts, and wall hanging. I fused my fabric to wonder under, and it worked fine.😊 I prefer to use my budget for dies on shapes I don't have stamps for, and what I can find more than one use for.

At my age, arthritis is like a separate entity so......my arthritis and I LOVE this machine. I use it only for cutting out images I've printed from digital scrapbooking kits or images I've stamped...so I have no need to hook it to a computer. The "direct cut" feature is easy to learn and use.

I wanted this machine precisely because I would not have to hook up to a computer! I'm happy with all the designs IN the machine, and I have drawings stored in there, even, so when I need more Spirelli shapes cut, or embroidery floss bobbins, etc. Plus I love the direct cut feature.

Agreed! I have terrible arthritis in hands and elbows so purchased the sdx85 because fussy cutting is difficult and love i can scan one image and copy several times to cut them out so i dont have to cranking through my manual die cutting machine several times.

Thanks Lindsay. Great tips. I like that you don't need a computer. I always tell people just hit buttons and see what happens when playing with tech. Haven't broken anything yet. It's amazing how it sounds just like an old brother typewriter I owned that also had a drawing function. I loved that thing, lol. Happy Sunday.

I bought a Scan n Cut last year at a good price and then got scared to use it. In the last week though, I have found my brace and used it heaps! I made sticky sea creatures for a large mural for our ladies coffee night and 12 x 12 ‘poster puzzles’ for kids church. I’ve made a heap of labels for gifts and also a stack of leaves for a Family Day project. I’ve now taught my 11 year old granddaughter how to use it too. Lindsay, you should have a go at using the Canvas workspace on your computer too. It’s so much easier when you want to make multiples of a shape. Select a shape, choose the size and hit ‘fill space.’ Bingo, nine hearts appear! (The only thing was, when I exported to my machine, it only cut out 6, even though it showed 9 on the screen?)

I have an old die cutter I hook to my laptop for that sort of thing. I use Scal2 software as I am very familiar with it cm and can wirk fast and I can avoid wear and tear on my scan n cut and consumables that way. My other cutter can use cheap generic Roland blades and takes longer mats for big projects. Thats one of the reason I only use this for scanning and cutting 😆 and I have absolutely no intrest in learning any new software unless I absolutely have to. I spent way too much time on a computer as it is 😆

The best piece of advice here is to leave it out. I have one I bought 5 years ago. I used it when I first got it, then I put it away so my craft room wouldn’t look cluttered. I feel overwhelmed in a cluttered space. So now, I haven’t used it in years. I need to find a spot for it!!

I was having the same issue so I moved mine onto a small wooden TV tray that I can store against the wall out of the way when not in use. When I’m ready to cut, I slide out the tray and pull up my chair. I find I use it more because I don’t have to do all the setup and the TV tray is the perfect height.

I have had a scan n cut for about three years. I am embarrassed to say that I have only used it a handful of times. The very first time I used it, I pressed my paper down, put it thru the machine and the paper was completely stuck and when I pulled up it tore and stuck and was a huge mess. This was quite depressing for my first time and may have contributed to my being leery of using it very often. I have watched many scan n cut tutorials and some are helpful, some are too complicated for me. You are totally right about getting it out and using it. I can’t believe all the cool things I could have cut by now. You mentioned over explaining,,,I find that is what I NEED. It helps me not be so nervous about doing it myself. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Another idea is to turn your mat upside down so you are “removing the mat from the paper”. Then with one hand you lift up the mat, and put your other hand on the paper between the mat and the paper, to gently coax it off the mat.

Love my Scan n cut! I use blue painters tape (washi would work too) to make sure things don't shift in cutting. The lower tack is easier on the mats and less chance of damage if you are using the part not being cut. I have mine on a drop leaf cart from Michaels. It is the perfect size and I can swing out the leaves when cutting, then drop them back to take up less room when not in use.

The CM350 is my FAVORITE version of the SNC. In July, I went to replace mine (because I sold it) and couldn’t find one. So, I bought the pink SDX85M from Amazon. Functions the same, but it’s not as loud and it cuts faster. I can’t remember if the options are the same though. I think it comes with more built in images. My issue is the mat is EXTREMELY sticky. It ripped my paper to shreds trying to remove it from the mat. People who buy the dies for stamps will definitely save the money- many times over!!

Great video Lindsay. I love my Scanncut and have the same model you have. I originally bought a Cricut Explore Air and literally the only thing I ever cut with it was the practice telephone it came with. I didn’t want to HAVE to use my iPad to work with it. I had wanted Scanncut but nobody I knew had ever used one. I eventually bought it about 3 yrs ago and I absolutely love it. I am still on my first mat just like you and every now and then clean it to make it sticky again. I use blue low tack painters tape to hold down my paper so it doesn’t shift. Great minds think alike using tape😉 I prefer less stickiness on my mat. When I first started using it my cuts would actually be a little curled when I peeled them off because the mat was so sticky. Thank you for your video. I’m sure it will get a few users to pull their scanners out and give them a go. I use mine exactly the way you use yours.

This is perfect, Lindsay - THANK YOU!!!! I've been trying to decide for years if I want an electronic cutting machine, and then if it would be a Cricut type or Scan-n-Cut. This helps show it's the SnC that would be better for my needs. It would be a complement to my dies, rather than an instead-of option. I prefer the more "finished" edges of die cuts, but I have SO many stamps that don't have dies that I'd love to cut out and I HATE fussy cutting. This would be perfect!! Thanks again!

Overwhelmed is understating it! I have the SDX125 because it adjusts for thickness and is suppose to be quieter. I was/am bound and determined to ‘not’ have my Scan ‘n Cut not be a paper weight.

That was super helpful, Lindsay! I bought (for very cheap) a used Cricut from a friend... not knowing exactly what I was getting. It was a couple of "generations" old, I had no idea what the limitations would be on it. Never occurred to me that I couldn't connect it to my computer or do the sort of thing you just did on the Scan and Cut. Such a waste sitting on my counter, now. This machine is doing what I'd hoped I could do, for my business packaging. It's going on my wish list!

The only reason I still have my ancient cricut is because I have SCAL software which lets me cut fonts and anything I design. Cricut sued the makers of SCAL and similar software and these small companies just removed cricut compatibility because they didn't have the money to fight it in court. That was the last straw for me with Cricut.

Wasn’t too long or elaborate. You made it look easy, doable. And great tip about letting it out. It’s totally different but I don’t use my synthesizer because I don’t have it standing somewhere but tugged into it’s box. And I so miss it but don’t have the space. So yeah, having room for it to stand “free to use” is an important thing I’d say

I love my scan n cut for cutting out stamps. But I also make scrapbooks, and most designer paper packs (Stamperia, Ciao Bella for example) have an ephemera sheet that I absolutely hate cutting up. But I can just scan the page and cut it out perfectly. There are a few that are a little more difficult to get scanned (i.e, if there is a background behind the individual images), but it doesn’t take much work to get it to cut correctly. Great video!

Great tutorial!! I just bought a Brother CM650W at our local crafty thrift store. Barely used, for $150.00. One of the crafters who bought one, but barely took it out of the box, I am sure. Then it was donated to the craft thrift store, The Legacy in Sebastopol CA. I just got it out to play and knew I could find a video from you for a tutorial!! Thanks! have so many stamps with out dies, my $150.00 was well spent!

Hi Jennifer -- have you ever viewed YT videos from PAPERED CHEF -- she is a Stampin' Up demonstrator and frequently does videos on SnC -- tips, tricks, techniques, troubleshooting, etc. Also does several live videos so you can ask questions as you watch -- she knows her stuff and has helped me learn a lot/better understand my machine. Hope your machine is back to full useability soon.

Thank you for sharing, what a great video. I too have a Brother Scan n Cut and love it. Everything you said is absolutely correct, if you don’t have it out you won’t use it. I bought mine primarily for cutting fabric for embroidery and sewing, but have used it more for paper crafts when homeschooling my grandkids. My sister just used it for a heat vinyl transfer and it worked beautifully. I love my Scan and Cut. Thank you again for sharing.

Oh, dearest Lindsey! You make me feel so much better about myself & my scan & cut! Ha! I bought mine online at a steal, put it on my crafting table, and left it there. Now, it sits tucked away in a cabinet! 😱 To be honest, I just didn’t/don’t know what to do with it. Now, I’m hoping I’ll soon find both the time, and the energy, to proceed, since you’ve made it look so simple! 😃 Thank you so much for all the wonderful things you share with us! I truly doubt that you could have any idea just what a tremendous gift you are! God bless you, and your precious loved ones! Jacqui ❤️ PS, anymore hints would be greatly appreciated! 😉😊

Great video. If you have a splat box that you keep handy, a light spritz of a repositional spray like aleen's tacky spray on the back of your images solves the problem of things not sticking, using tape, etc. Especially if you have a few images on small pieces of cardstock to cut out, you don't have to tape them all. I love what you did about not buying dies. I still buy dies of course, but ones that only cut out the stamped images, & shape nesting dies I no longer but. The machine absolutely pays for itself! & it can do so much more. I know folks who have sold other machines because they no longer need them. I love mine so much & a great thing you said is

I prefer the tape. You don't want it too stuck because the paper will curl or possibly tear when you remove it.

I just bought the DX85 on Black Friday sale for about the same $250 price, on QVC. I saw the same exact model and color on HSN for $4-500. I’ve wanted one for years. I just received it today so I was glad I saw this video. There are many great videos about the scanNcut series, I felt like this brand was the best for me.😉😊

Thanks for doing this video Lindsay. Cause I’m actually thinking about purchasing one of these machines too scan and cut my own Stickers. This is exactly what I could use to do this. I have a bunch of Cricuts but none of the ones that I have will do the scan and cut feature. That’s what I need. I draw my own designs and this will work as long as the outline is a dark outline and I got that. Thanks again!!! ☺️

Thanks for sharing, Lindsay. I have this machine and it works fairly well and I've used it a good bit. I keep my machine out since it doesn't require much space. I love kiss-cutting stickers with it and it's fun for die cuts as well. I need to play around with shapes more and I've played with software, but I prefer the Silhouette software, so I may purchase a Silhouette in the future. It has saved me from wanting dies and a cutting machine, so yes, it's saved me money and storage space so I can have more stamps! I have zero regrets about my purchase.

I have the silhouette and it has a pixiscan which can scan and cut out in the same way. It is really great as you can also make stickers and saves expensive dies. I think all these machines are a great addition to crafting and stretching your supplies.
