There are some great moments in the Third Age. The fall of Arnor and Rise of Agmar is obviously there, the Kin Strife in Gondor, even an exploration into the Great Plague would be interesting

The Fall of Arnor would make a good series. The problem with Amazon is that they could have based themselves on Archetypes: - Sauron was supposed to be a pseudo Promethean figure generating religious engineering in Harad and Rhûn with the metallurgical revolution he made in the east and south; He could be inspired by Mephistopheles from Goethe's Faust or Azazel from the book of Enoch or Lucifer from Paradise Lost; - Galadriel was supposed to be a sage and a political opponent of Annatar's reformist ideas. She could be a philosopher-queen archetype;

I would love to see a show about the travels of Aragorn, when he enlisted with Rohan and Gondor with pseudonyms. It would also be fun to see why Gandalf is so beloved by the Elves, what problems did he provide guidance for?

This is a great idea although I think such a show would need some connections being made between the different settings so it is clear the different stories being told in different seasons are all part of the same overall timeline. I would love to see Jackson and Co back in charge overall but they would need to bring in other people to delegate much of the work to.

The fall of armor The golden age of Gondor and the fall of the line of kings for the more epic inspired line of theme The kinstrife is prime material for an game of thrones like series But after Amazon series I am completely convinced that at the moment nobody is able to produce a real good serie able to respect the material and the original author When Galadriel launched herself in the middle of the ocean with apparently no viable plan other than Swim back to the continent crossing an entire ocean by the force of her arms and legs I wanted to cleanse my eye with a branding iron

I'd have much the same content season-to-season as you've laid out. But I'd give it a framing device: Aragorn and Arwen telling these stories to Eldarion. Legolas and Gimli visited them in the years following Sauron's defeat, as did Eomer, while Eowyn and Faramir would see them often. Even Merry and Pippin returned to spend their last days in Gondor. All these characters could recount the stories relating to their own backgrounds and histories.

You know, this might not be what us Tolkien fans would want, but doing a show about the Adventures of Aragorn before the events of the Fellowship of the Ring would be more attractive to normies because it would effectively be an action-adventure show, where you have an established name to be the hook for those familiar with the movies but not the books, and tell the tale of how he met Gandalf and the Hobbits, of him serving in the armies of King Thengel, and fighting for Ecthelion II. This keeps your costs low enough to tell the rest of the Third Age through episodes starting with Aragorn or another character being told the history of the third age and fading into episodes specifically dedicated to those events.

Something like this could be done. HBO is doing similar with GoT and House of the Dragon. Now MY idea, which I've been thinking about for a while now, is two fully animated shows. First would be "JRR Tolkien's: The Hobbit." Each episode would be a chapter in the book, with a narrator that isn't a cast member. No Bilbo or Gandalf narration. The show wouldn't end with the last chapter of the book though. There would be an Appendix showing what Gandalf was up to after leaving the Company at the edge of Mirkwood. This episode would start with a "Flashback" scene from that episode, only instead of the Company entering, it would be Gandalf riding away. Then going on for a couple more episodes of the White Council kicking The Necromancer out of Dol Guldur. This part would end with Gandalf arriving at Dale right before the Battle of Five Armies. Next would be a similar animated show of the complete "JRR Tolkien's: The Lord of the Rings." This would also have a narrator. The same narrator from The Hobbit. Again, each episode would be one chapter from the book as they were written. Each season could be each "Book" within the main books. Now, if these went over well enough, parts of The Silmarillion could also be done. These would also have the same narrator. The big thing to tie them all together is that the narrator is actually Eru Ilúvatar telling the story. Like your pitch, this would be a long running show and be a ton of work.

Happy new year! I think you touched on my main thought, any show that adequately covers the events of any of these ages would be amazing, but a staggering task. it's beyond ambitious. I gave a lot of thought to how I would do just Silmarillion, and there was no way I could come up with that would keep fans happy without making all of Game of Thrones look like a school project, you'd need multiple seasons to even get to the Awakening of Men. So many people have been inspired by Tolkien, people like Martin, Paolini and Rowling, but when you start thinking about the logistics of adaptations, it immediately becomes clear that what Tolkien created drastically, comically dwarfs them in scale.

What are you think we should demand more middle of films or other media just because we can, I do have some weaknesses for particular part of the third age to see the big screen. First is the War in the North as done in animated form, an anthology film covering the resistance of Lothlorien, Mirkwood, Dale and Erebor against Moria, Dol Guldur and Rhun. This could reunite Cate Blanchette, Marton Csokas, Lee Pace and Billy Connolly while introducing new voices for Brand, Bard II and Thorin Stonehelm. They would more or less be a miniseries akin to Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal that could be edited into a three hour plus epic. The other is the Angmar Wars, mainly the Fall of Arnor with the Battle of Fornost as the centrepiece, and can be done in live action. Seeing these opposing kingdoms in all their valour and terror would add some real texture to the film versions of Aragorn through his ancestors and especially the Witch-King.

Hmmmmmmmm yes yes I approve of this layout 🧐 I'll need a script written, actors cast, sets made, and for goodness sakes someone get Howard Shore asap! 😂 Personally I'd enjoy original characters and set them in Forenost or Moria and see the events of the 3rd age thru their eyes with interactions and cameos from well known characters. Absolutely nothing would interfere or contradict with the original source material. Sigh. One can only dream 😊

In all of these ideas, one thing should remain constant. Bree. Established at the Northern Crossroads, Bree weaves itself throughout the history of both the Second and Third Ages. Think about it. How often in the legendarium do folks meet up in Bree for instance?

In lord of the rings there is a theme of loss. The kingdoms of the elves and men, history being forgotten, knowledge and magic fading away. Interesting how that matches with current year hollywood, it used to be something in the past but now all its skill and knowledge to tell and craft a good story is forgotten, gone like rain in a meadow.

I just spent some days sharing books with kids about Tolkien and somehow always find myself envying Bilbo and Frodo in Bag end eating breakfast, (second breakfast, elevenses and so on): The thing old Tollers was defending and made LOTR so compelling. The histories are great certainly and in the end all roads lead to the Shire. I'm not sure anything can recreate that for me.

Excellent ideas there. I'd like to see a show explaining the division of Arnor, with prersumably original characters plotting behind the scenes and the hinted link back to the fact that evil has not gone. Fast forward to the corruption of Rhudaur as the evil men influenced by Angmar sieze power there. An upside for such episodes are that on the whole they need few characters and all is political machinations, with a couple of carefully arranged "accidents" to a couple of characters, ideally at least one of which has been built for audience sympathy. All this before there is any specific mention of a guiding foce of evil, because as far as anyone knows, Sauron has been destroyed. End with a teaser shpwing the Witch King riding into Carn Dum and demanding that "the troops are mustered for war, we shall drive the Dunedain into Lindon and destroy both them and the Havens".

@@pinkacethe difference between the movies and this TV show is that it TRIES to follow the books as good as possible. I guess the hobbit movie broke more lore of theatrical purposes. But lotr tried to keep as much as possible to the original works. Only small differences like costmetics for places and armor to make it look more appealing to a wider audience. Aswell as keeping some Support characters out to not have to many characters. Rings of power changes the whole story it’s like saying It was pippin who brought the right together with boromir to Mount doom.

@@Mr.im1 Most of the story in RoP is made up, original stuff not based on the books, especially the dialog. Just like MAJOR plot points from the books were ignored for the first movies. But that doesn't matter, what I am saying is that it was illogical to hate the LoTR movies 25 years ago, just as it is illogical to hate RoP now. Eventually the fans will come to love the show on its own merits, not on how closely it followed the source material, JUST as it happened for the movies.

Wow, I didn't know Aragorn journeyed through Moria before the events of LOTR? When did he do this? Did he travel alone? I love that there's still new things to be discovered even 20 years after reading the book for the first time. I agree that anthology is the way to approach this type of story. For the same reason that Greek/Norse mythology is awesome to read about, it's not just one linear plot tied to one or more main characters. Happy new year to you all

I'd do a limited cinematic universe. What I mean by that is something more like the Mandoverse, where there is a beginning, middle and end. Instead of there being one big show there are multiple smaller shows (2-3 seasons), a few limited shows, some animated shows and movies and a few 3-hour movies released in the cinemas. Unlike something like the MCU it's not milked until it gets bad. Instead there's a clear vision for the whole story, and an endpoint.

I’m waiting for is about the first age maybe a little before it the first war with Melcor and also something with the war of wrath, the battle of unnumbered tears, that age interest me the most. But pulling off those battles would be very hard. Or even the war for the similes from there you can pretty much just continue the story up to the return of the king so you can see the ages throughout the series

considering how western animation can go for >5 seasons (or >7, even) sometimes, a full animated adaptation of each age of Middle Earth is definitely possible, if only sufficient resources were committed to it.

You skipped over the most important question: who would write the dialogue? I think the Hobbit trilogy (and even to some extent the LOTR trilogy) demonstrated quite well that Peter, Fran and Philippa don't know how to write Tolkienian prose or, if they do know, don't care to put it into practice in a mainstream Hollywood production. The idea of a whole ten-season TV series telling stories from Tolkien but with the characters all speaking like a Marvel movie (or, worse, with a bunch of thees, thous, hences and hithers clumsily thrown in by a writer who doesn't know how to use them) is pretty terrifying.

It’s very easy to conceptualize a grand idea for a TV show or movie. The hard part is writing it all down, putting to paper the conversations, moment to moment transitions. It’s easy to look at Rings of Power & judge, but try writing a script, try creating a conversation between characters. Go ahead.

I'd love to see a series Based on Middle Earth of the life and times of sorrow men from when he landed in Middle Earth with the two blue Wizards and to take it from there That would give them a whole bunch of unknown content to fall upon in the east and in the South with those blue Wizards and without Then and show the arrival of Ratagast and then Gandalf. And just touching on those characters lately. And in this series they can actually do the scouring of the Shire Properly which wasn't done in the Peter Jackson films the adaptation films.

I have a question not related but one I thought about recently, how did the good guys or least the consul of Elrond know that the ring could only be destroyed at mount doom? I doubt Sauron would have told anyone that or even how he made it, I have a couple of theories and maybe it’s a pointless question doesn’t really matter but it’s one I’ve been thinking about, any answers?

The casual viewer which would have to outmatch the Tolkien fan x amount of times to make this show profitable doesn’t relate to realms, historic events or ages of Middlearth but to CHARACTERS and individual fates! While I would love to see an anthology show of the second and third age, it is basically impossible to get get on a good writing and high production value level cause first the problems with rights on the stories and second studios and their calculating in financial revenue of such (a) show(s)

How would you approach a story in the Fourth Age? What would become of their children? What adventures might await them? I THINK YOUR OVERVIEW IS REALLY GREAT. BUT, I THINK THE DWARVES ARE IMPORTANT TO THE OVERALL STORY WITH INTERESTING STORYTELLING OF THE ANNOMOCITY BETWEEN DWARVES AND ELVES. I WOULD ALSO NOTE THE IMPORTANCE OF A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE GODS AND THE ELVES RELATIONSHIP IN VALINOR. I THINK GALADRIEL WOULD BE THE NATURAL HERO OF THE UNDER STORY OF LOTR SHOWING HER MOVING FROM ELVEN BATTLE MAGE QUEEN TRADITIONAL ELF, TO AN ELVEN SORCERESS POWERHOUSE HIGH QUEEN WISE AND FARSEEING ELF. THROUGH GALADRIEL WE SEE THE GROWTH OF THE ELVES LEARNING FROM THE GOOD AND BAD OF THE THREE AGES OF MIDDLEEARTH.

I would say it in Elvish but I don't know what it is in Elvis. in Hobbiton I think it's happy The old day Aren't there like three days of yule In the in the Hobbit in Keller calendar And then two days at Midsummer an extra day at the end of the year for leap years. I like the hobbits and calendar that token devise 30 days in each month three extra days in the winter two extra days in the summer and an extra day in the winter for leap year make so much sense I think we need to contact our legislators and tell them to switch to that new calendar. and that's in every country. I mean seriously who needs only 28 days in a month and 29 every four years It just doesn't work

I would hire people that loved the medium, were skilled and experienced at the job, who understood how to adapt something, and that didn't have a political agenda to meet a diversity quota, or to invent new characters. Essentially, if I were gigarich, infinite money company, I'd hire Peter Jackson, the WETA workshop team, get Philipa Boyens back, and give them a blank check. I'd also tell them to focus on Erebor, Dale, and Mirkwood during the War of the Ring.

Okay, PJ and his team's work is good and successful in its own right, but the depiction of this universe in visual media should not be their sole monopoly. These people are also mortal. As long as their vision is glorified, no one will find the courage to depict this universe and make a production about it. At this point, we, as the fan base, see the damage. That's why everyone who tries to do something about this universe should be given a chance and not be judged based on their PJ vision.

I would do a show taking place in some random region of Middle Earth, with all original characters. There's 3,000 years in the third age alone in a massive world, why does a show need to depict the famous people and events of Middle Earth? Just make a show following some unnamed city-state of men and/or Dwarves or whatever other people in their struggles with raiding orcs or something, allow us to explore and imagine middle earth more.

I'm not keen on having any Original characters. If they're not names that Tolkien came up with and placed in the Appendices, then I don't want to see them.

I am surprised to hear Rings Of Power being mentioned favorably, since it is not remotely Tolkien in nature, with nothing more than some names and place names being used to tell a very bad story.

They don't make shows for the sake of making a good quality entertaining show. They make propaganda covered in whatever veneer they think will work. Most of the time it works, sometimes their propaganda is so strong even normies know something is off.
