The bottom field is a massive shock no matter how fit you are.remember the psychological impact it had on me on the prc 1984.

Definitely compound movements ! Mate don’t forget to mention swimming buddy as it’s important plus a great recovery too although from memory 12 lessons or more swimming, in training, I joined 85 though 😅lol beastings from Falkland vets corporal Armor loon , I end up doing 25 years and was in PT Branch, loved my time but more as a soldier 3 yrs in Recce Troop best job as a marine, para course and ships diver , and MSI all great

@@philbeattie1623- 🤔 your name rings a bell but I can't place you. I went through CTCRM in late '89 then on to 45 in mid '90, were you up in Arbroath around then? I joined Recce in '94, maybe you were the evil bastard club swinger who took us on the physical assessment phase at Condor and then Kinlochleven? The morning runs from Kin still wake me up in a sweat 30yrs later, I've never been a fast runner and I think I 🤮 at the end of each of those. Who knew 4 miles could be pure agony from start to finish 😂

Hey buddy I was 194 Tp in training, you’ll know Basher Bates he was sin my Troop in training, he went ML and left as officer , I was in 40 most of my career and Lympstone , then did PTI 2 and 1’s later in my career 25 years , loved it do it all again in a heartbeat

- Strength training (OHP, Bench, Squats, Deadlift) - Sprint intervals - Calisthenics (Burpees, push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges) - Zone 2 running - Loaded carries (Rucking, farmer carry) - Sled drags / pulls

The hardest part is knowing what to do and at what intensity/ routine. Most people start following a list like this, feel a niggle, push through and then become injured before starting back at square 1

look after your back and keep in strong as possible i got MD (medical discharged) at week 27 because of this issue luckily i crossed over to the Navy, back injuries are very common. great video Royal

Doing endurance training is super important, regardless if it's directly used in your military training. It increases your ability to recover and allows you to progress your high intensity training faster. It enables you to have a big gas tank. You're going to think better, sleep better, recover better and not gas out as fast during high intensity sessions. Someone who doesn't have good aerobic fitness who goes straight into high intensity training isn't going to benefit from it as much.

Spot on. We always look to build a big aerobic base. One thing we always say is: High intensity work is earnt through high volume work.

If I knew what I knew now (US Army standpoint), I agree with you 2000%. I’d wish I tried out rucking a bit more beforehand, get my feet used to it, blisters and things like that. And get mentally ready for 2am smoke seasons with flutter kicks, push/press ups etc. And my final lesson to young me would be learn to hurry up and wait 😂

I’ve been out the corps for 7 years now. A couple of weeks ago I took up yoga, two classes a week I’ve started doing something called power yoga and all I could think the first time I did it was, turn off the relaxing music and this is like being thrashed at CTC. Lots of static static holds like high planks and squat positions and stuff. Genuinely the closest fitness class I’ve found replicates that unique type of exercise that is a troop thrashing, minus the sprints haha

I didn’t train until I joined! I didn’t have a clue. Still passed out of CTC though I did get back trooped and injured 🤣🤣🤣

Crossfit and endurance fitness, Alot with weighted vests. Lifting heavy weights superset with high intensity cardio.

When I looked at the RM the recruiter gave me a great leaflet about training. Sprints were right at the top. Body weight excersises, especially lifting your own body weight in pulls ups, climbing etc and runs with heavy packs.

Royal Marines Reservist Green Beret in January 1988. Dundee Detachment. Only exercise looking back, I would do more is Weight Training as I was skinny. We were very lucky as several ex full time Royal Marines who joined civvy street from 45 Commando etc, served in Dundee as Reservists. Every one of these Gentlemen in Dundee were brilliant Teachers/Mentors. I think we had at least 2 ML's so PT was intense lol. First time I turned up to do PT , SGT. 'Taff' Jolly was gently breaking us new boys in, I crapped myself as he had the build of a 5 ft tall bodybuilder. I thought to myself 'Lets rethink and join the Medics'. Had a pint in the Navy Junior Rates Mess afterwards, well tried too but my hands and arms were shaking so much in pain, half the beer was spilling over me. So I thought to myself, how soon before I come back !! Every time I got a bollacking and had to do press ups I thought 'I am getting fitter quicker'. True story, pardon me for long paragraph.

You dont need to turn up at CTC super human. The training team and the first 10 weeks will do the that especially the gym sessions/ camp circuits leading up to Gym passout. Bottom field is a different beast all togehter. I think back fondly and with some heavy regret at the time i spent at Lympstone in the past. Whilst there, just dont let injury and forgetting the reasons why you joined hold you back. Good luck.

Train to pass the entrance tests very well the progressive training will take care of the rest. Do not bulk up body weight exercises not body building crap. As a NOD I found the easiest exercise was the boot runs. The gym work and bottom field which is two periods of running but over the assault course repeatedly builds up running basics. Ex PW1.

Think I’ve came last in every “pays to be a winner” sprint thrashing ever. I must have zero fast twitch fibres in my body.

i dont think you trained wrong. it sounds like you had a good base fittness. you said your traiing runs were based on long stamina runs but on the course the runs where much shorter. but the shorter runs happen often and continuously so the stamina you built up was not wasted

Yes I know what you're saying but in that scenario I should have done more high intensity running intervals at the 400-800m distance. I had a good aerobic base however didn't have much training specificity at high intensity output due to not knowing what was required.

How times have changed,back in the early 80s if you couldnt swim when in trgyou got lessons also you didnt need to be a muscle man just be fit to start off with,its all in the head,seems nowadays emphasis is on upper body,ordinary blokes may not have the metabolism to look like a brick shithouse average height say 5 ft 5ins wiry build get fit run as fast as you can work hard.

Not much has changed. You don't have to be a muscle man, as you can see in the video I'm not. But doing weight training helps with robustness, injury prevention and the heavy loads you'll carry at Lympstone.

We know the rubber dagger 🗡 jokes but we all know that the course is solid enough to weed out the wannabees and 🇬🇧 are Mil is getting a bit to weak so more Trained lads we have ready for that day I'm sure is a good thing 4 para is Catterick then p company a lot quicker and we all know main solidering skills learnt on the job. I know your a big wig at the dizzy heights. But this is more for 🇬🇧🥷🏆💪 British humanity survival and I'm sure you have vulnerable family members that you want protected and I'm sure you know if they can get man power deployable in 3 months vs 2yrs going to be win win 🏆 mostly if you have good ds

Society isn’t like it used to be. A lot of guys have never trained much before. When we were growing up you were non stop exercising down the park with your mates etc.
