For an old one this was really useful and I am training at 59 to maintain strength and mobility and trying hard not to die! Like you said it is about an insurance mindset that what you put in now builds interest earned thanks Dave

I like the concept of "insurance policy". As one ages, working out is paying into the insurance policy that minimises the risk of injury from activities of daily living, whether it be picking up a heavy garbage can or a basket of groceries from the car into the house.

Great video. Coach Mike Chadwick is really on to something. I just wish he’d been around when I was a young firefighter as I would have been better prepared and spent less time injured.

I do: Weighted pull ups Incline Clapping push ups with 20kg vest Pistol squats with dumbbells Box jumps with one leg Neck curls Lateral raises and hammer curls And also mma pad work and sparring

We do all the recommend training in the Crossfit Gym that I go to in Germany. We find out the 1RM, and do in the next weeks the programmed training based on the specfic % of the 1RMs in the training plan. 🏋️. Great results. A lot of fun. And not to much pounding to the body. I really love it.

Great video as usual, thanks mate. As an idea for a future video, would be interesting to see how SF effectively manage self-talk. Plenty of videos out there but they all focus on what it is and why it matters, not how to improve it. Especially not when (like most of us) you‘re not facing extreme danger, but a day full of mundane tasks at the office. The best I‘ve found is it should be like a wise father & be orientated to support you achieving your goals. Also the principles of good leadership; what in your experience do good leaders have that sh1t leaders don‘t? 👌😊

11:38 I had been wondering about this, but more if there's a ceiling rather than a minimum. In other words, there must be a point where the curve starts to flatten in terms of athletic performance gain from squats or deadlifts (or whatever exercise). So e.g. once you can squat twice your bodyweight, would you be better off doing higher reps at that weight, rather than adding weight.

Just came back from RMC duntroon (Australia), after 6 days of foward operating base training. Struggled with pack marches up hills (something ive never trained before). Can you please do a proper pack march training video please. Tips and tricks.

I enjoy your videos and im subscribing. Many years ago a girl i was freinds with dad was ex SAS. He was a really chilled guy and not big at all. Very wiry but in his 50's still suberbly fit

That looked a bit brutal! Took me back to biomechanics at uni studying sports science. Squatted on a Kistler force plate to measure vertical force. Being small and weight-trained I whooped the asses of bigger untrained blokes 😂 Super interesting content, Simon 👍🏼

You should invest in "DJI Mic" clip on microphone because your sound is quite softer then other video clips. Also it would be good to have back up sound for shots that are further away.

Mike Chadwick has a great app, likewise with Stoic Conditioning. For emergency services Vanguard Conditioning and Fitness for the Frontline are both good. I’ve looked at them all and wish I was younger!

I do programming from SOFlete, it’s great and has definitely made me harder to kill. Their philosophy is aligned with yours as well, durability is king.

Only you can answer that mate because we are all different. If you are getting the results you want then great, if not then yes you need to reassess.

@@thenaturaledge yeah I think I’ll have to, I do alot of strength training and it’s affecting me negatively I’ve noticed, lifts are slowly decreasing and I’m not waking up properly. Adding hypertrophy aswell after so much fatigue dosen’t help 😆

I’m 15 and my dream is special forces. I do MMA for a couple years and I did CrossFit for a year now I’m training at home doing WODs and regular strength lifts and I try to run 2 times per week (still doing the MMA). Any advice on how to keep going and get my body physically and mentally ready for special forces? (We go to the army here at 18 (mandatory)) Thanks

Try to do Chi Gong. These are exercises for own bodyenergy I am handicapped since 1965 and do Chi Gong since 1990. In 2016 I finished my first marathon, in 2018 an ultra (more than 43 km). Now I work with kettlebells. Full of energy. Livingroomwarrior, 67, Germany, retired. ❤😂 Good luck!❤.

So a number of sports scientists and trainers, like Alex Viada for example, have pointed out that there's no statistical evidence that getting stronger or more powerful plays a role in the likelihood of a runner getting injured. And while i appreciate the effort of these guys and their intent, i'm wondering if there's any scientific proof that their emphasis on strength/power actually reduces injuries?

By using these methods my team tripled the parachute regiment pass rate and reduced MSKI's significantly. The same methods have been used to ensure we have the highest pass rates on the most arduous courses in the world. Science is a culture of doubt until proven otherwise. Huge fan of Alex's work, but tactical athletes don't just run in a straight line. Our centre is for research and when we find out our methods are not working through empirical evidence and practical application, we'll own it and change to ensure we roll with the science and data.

There’s plenty of statistical evidence out there. The main issue is pinning down one consensus given the lack methodological homogeneity. For example a recently published study in the BMJ reported that a 10% increase in strength training volume reduced the risk of injury by more than four percentage points. There are other SRMA papers that support these data too. Alex Viada gained his undergrad degree in the late 90s, I believe it was political. Whilst he might be a “good trainer” he doesn’t have a grasp of the literature if he states there’s “no statistical evidence” For context, I am the Dr in the video and I specialise in musculoskeletal health. I have published some papers that speak to and of improving strength and power in the interested of improving health and performance whilst reducing injury levels.

If you’re training for longevity and enjoyment then your training should reflect that. Ie: low intensity high volume exercise that’s enjoyable. 3 sets of 70% + 1RM’s etc are not “longevity” exercises. They are short term. Longevity exercises that are low intensity are body weight exercises and walking, the odd run and a sprint sesh. And for the most part they are also enjoyable and for the most part should pose less risk of injury.

What was your running cadence? I tracked it at pretty close to 180. You should aim for 180 spm constant. Walking 100-130spm, depending on distance. But you’d know all that anyway. In my previous comment I mentioned longevity - walking is ultimately hands down the single biggest contributor to longevity. IMO it’s also the king of exercises. The data derived from 60 minutes of walking can be used in a multiple of ways in programming. Personally - I’ve done away with all the heavy stuff and gone back to body weight and lifting no more than 25% of body weight when using weights. I’ve done this for “longevity” as well. Once you hit 50 and it’s easier to suffer injuries doing all that heavy stuff. Plus - all that bulk starts to get heavy to carry around. That’s why I’m a firm believer in ensuring maintaining the ability to push, pull, curl and squat your own body weight…by doing body weight exercises. Being 60 and weighing 120kg of muscle but not being able to push yourself off the floor at a speed fast enough to save yourself is not a good thing.
