The beauty standards in Korea are to another level of crazy. The extreme judgement and pressure put on people to look a certain way is very detrimental mentally. I’m happy that I live in Australia 😊

I had several East Asian friends in elementary school and I always thought their monolids were so cool. We are in our 40s now and none of them have monolids anymore.

I really hated when people would tell me I’m quiet or don’t talk enough and act like it’s helping when in fact it made me hide in my shell even more As I’ve gotten older the less I hear and worry about it but realize the people who said that to me were usually the loud never shutting up kind of people ….so comparing me to them yes I would agree I was quiet 😅

I am a Filipino and knowing that South Koreans use "Filipino" as a derogatory term really stings, especially that during the Korean War, Filipino soldiers fought alongside South Koreans for their victory. 🤷‍♀️

lol living long term in Korea made me start hating makeup actually... I stopped wearing it other than maybe some bb cream entirely. I also stopped taking selfies. idk... I just started HATING it. the overkill, obsession, constant in-your-face with perfect, unrealistic beauty standards just ruined it all for me. now that I'm back in the US, I've started to enjoy it again. also... mirrors and reflective surfaces seemingly being EVERYWHERE... and everyone checking their hair making sure it looks perfect. I started going crazy and purposely messing up my and my fiance's hair, or going to cafes and taking ugly face double chin selfies in "retaliation" to how god damn ridiculous and over the top it all was. like damn people take a chill pill. haha he'd just laugh a lot on our dates btw... he said his friends growing up and in the military would make fun of him and call him the equivalent of the Korean "n-word" because his skin is slightly darker. PSHT. gross. I told him tell me where they are and I'll go after them haha. my weird Busan boy will be joining me on a visa in the US soon

Now I have applied to another Uni as a 3rd year transfer and I do not know whether I want to stay and work in Korea in future or not 😅 From what it seems to me now (probably because of this strong rivalry spirit aka 경쟁심) all koreans are super mature from a very young age and are surely super competitive! Beauty standards in Korea is pretty high up there. I had Korean friends especially in college days, many of them rich, and one of them would say they feel insecure everytime they go Korea because of the beauty standards. My friend is honestly so beautiful. She definitely has the looks no doubt about that. She has the tall nose, tall height, pale and clear skin, symmetrical face etc. I never understood the big deal until I did more research and got into Korean and East/South East Asian culture and Asian culture in general. In general, I find Korean people one of the most physically attractive ethnic groups of Asia and of East Asia. Also all Asians and all ethnic groups are all beautiful. What I have noticed is that those Koreans who are more westernized and living outside of Korea more likely don't emphasize on Korean beauty standards. Some don't care about skin care at all as what I have observed etc... I am Filipino with European ancestry, but I consider myself pure Filipino. I am proud of my fair skin to "morena" color when I am exposed to the sun. Some East Asian especially Korean men especially in my college days have asked me out on dates. Maybe they were just open minded and/or liked me for whatever reason. They said I was beautiful and kind and sweet girl. But I didn't date because I was too focused on my studies. Also I felt like I was being pressured by them to date them. And I don't like submitting to people who make me feel uncomfortable. I guess they really liked me. And some traditional ones have secretly admired me. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Every one is beautiful and including you. Never feel pressure to have beauty standards. You are already more than good and beautiful enough!

Honestly, it's absolutely nuts to me that plastic surgery is considered a normal thing to do in South Korea. Surgery is not normal. You're own body is normal. Plastic surgery is necessary for people who have been in accidents etc to help them recover from horrible eg burns. It is also possibly necessary for certain (few) individuals born with say a cleft palate. All the rest of this is nonsense and just leads to horrific outcomes in society. We're meant to look different. We're not meant to all be programmed to want to look like - and be required by society to go under the knife to actually achieve - whatever is the latest trend. I'm surprised it's so normalised in Korea. It's not a good discovery. I'm curious about scarring? And botched surgeries? And aging with all this work done - is more necessary as you get older because certain parts of your body don't age? I've heard if you get breast implants, you'll need to get them redone roughly every decade, and when you get them you're at risk of various issues, including puncture and infection. I really really wish plastic surgery would stop being offered cosmetically. Kids born of such altered parents won't realise where their looks come from! There won't be cool generational family photos. And it blew my mind that this gorgeous youtuber was covering this from the angle of "I wasn't pretty". Gurl, honey, from one listen of your content I can already tell you're the definition of beautiful - note I said one LISTEN. Your words show a beautiful soul, something that you've obviously always had. Damn, I wish I had been born physically beautiful, the world would be easier, but the "ideal" by plastic surgery is just so commercial and corrupt. I've heard the same is true in Brazil (maybe South America generally). I wish the world would stop this insanity. It's because it's available that it's considered acceptable. I was that ugly awkward no friend type of kid. Didn’t know when i became “pretty” but now at 40 i still don’t feel comfortable when men stare or people complimenting me. I’ve never put any effort into my looks though beside taking care of my teeth & skin and taking daily bath. 🫣
