In this video, Ken asks Gabbi, how important is RANGE, as a Singer? You may be surprised at her answer!
How Important Is Range, As A Singer? Gabriela Gun Interview - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
If you ask any singer what goals they have, almost always, you will hear: "Range. More Range!"
Very few singers are satisfied with their ability to hit any note on the spectrum.
Most are pleading for more high range, but some wish for more lower range capabilities. Either way, it's Range, Range, Range!
This is an interesting conversation between two vocalists about the importance of Range.
Is it important? If so, how important?

I agree with Gabriela 100%. Better to have a very good tone and colour than breaking the ''Guiness Records of high notes'' just to prove something. She's looking great BTW. Thanks for the video.

Gabbi nails it. Rather have color and tone than tons of range but everyone finds it irritating

Thanks, Ken and Gabbi; interesting chat! I think listening to Frank Sinatra (who could sing very high, reportedly, but chose to sing in a lower range) we can see the truth of what Gabriela says, that massive range is not the be all and end all - his tone is wonderful. That said, as someone who sings 2nd bass in the choir (the lowest section of a choir), yet can now sing higher than my mum and friend (both sopranos), I value range as being what essentially adds the wow factor to singing. Kudos to Gabriela for persisting against her health problems, and wowing us with her strength and range, truly something to aspire to! It is the combination of a good teacher and a good student that gives rise to greatness. As Ken is an exceptionally good teacher and Gabriela a very good student, greatness is inevitable!

Right. It’s like she doesn’t hang her hat on her range per se.

Wonderful and very important video, especially for those feeling their range isn’t wide enough to sing well and getting discouraged because of it. While you can keep working on expanding it, that doesn’t mean you cannot blow people away with what you’ve already got, provided that you know your voice well and master colours and emotions. Thank you both, Ken and Gabbi, for the insights and the inspiration. 🙏

While range may not be everything, it certainly doesn't hurt matters, that's for sure! Nearly every singer's endeavor is to expand their ranges.

Agree that a good tone and deliverance is more important than range, but range is nice to have. I'm so happy for you, Gabbi, that you've been able to heal from Lyme's and are sharing your story. God bless you both.

So refreshing to hear this! There’s so much to be said for tonal quality and the character of one’s unique voice. Higher range isn’t necessarily better. Just like more notes in a guitar solo isn’t always better.

It's not just how you get from point A to point B. It's how you get there, everything in between. Totally agree with GABBI, she speaks with knowledge and authority... just like her mentor, KEN!...Ken, I'm born again too, i totally understood your question to Gabbi. Feeling a song is believing. Makes for a much more powerful and spine tingling moment, to make memorable

At the outset, it is more important to sing songs that fit your range, rather than attempt to expand your range, to fit a song. Hits such as Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On"; are not achieved because the singer was able to achieve the range of the song. Rather; the song was written to match the range and voice of the singer.

I’m so glad you spoke about this. To some..it’s ALL about the range..or..the ability to hit those high notes…I love what Gabbi said (and I agree) would much rather hear, beautiful, rich, colorful tones.. then several octaves of range… I have a good friend who has lymes..and it was really hard to diagnose so she went quite a while undiagnosed.. it’s been very difficult. Also, you are completely different singers, but Shania Twain also suffered from lymes, she never thought she would sing again, and I do believe she had surgery on her vocal cords.. can really messed you up. Blessings you are well now..blessings :)

Ken, have you seen Alex Holycross of The Native Howl? I just discovered them this week. Alex's vocals are insane and I have never seen fingerwork like his on a guitar. It sounds like he takes Fry to another level.

I'm limited in the sense that I can't do Roy Orbison. Elvis works and Johnny Cash too, but the very high register is just too hard. But you can do a lot with the lower and middle range, as many have proved over the years.

Interesting, I can sing in around 3 octaves but 2 of them are below middle C, I'm learning to work with it more and appreciate it. Everyone loves a good high note, I like to grab one now & then, but to get good tone you need to warm up for quite a while and practice a lot in the upper register. Then I think about a singer like Johnny Cash, dude sings in like 1 octave but you feel it, he gets the point across. We cant all be Dimash & if we were it would get a bit boring anyway.

If you can't control and sustain highest and lowest notes of your range, as well as all notes in-between it's not your real range. It's just highest and lowest notes. If it sounds great you can get away with 2.5 Octaves. With practice and good technique you can add a couple of Octaves. I can hit B1 and F6 but that's not my range. My actual range is approaching 5 Octaves but I concentrate on doing 4 - 4.5 Octaves that people like to hear.

I think range is good to have but not that important. I have a 6 octave range in total. (2. Subharmonic to whistle register) and I can connect them beautyfully. (It's really that straight forward if you can't connect the Note they don't count) but. I have to consider the more opertunities you have the more complex the music theory is for this reason I transpose to two octaves and have a few moments where I hit the extremes.

Quite an interesting topic and vehicle for the topic. To my ears, Ian Gillan (who played Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar) sounds amazing today. His pitch range is not what it used to be, but his range of expression is much greater. He has a lot of attention to detail and there are many different approaches to his phrasing. Similarly, despite his extremely narrow range, Lemmy's covers are very convincing because of his own conviction. His rendition of the Trooper is lively and very dramatic. Same thing can even be said of Johnny Ramone singing It's a Wonderful World. Now unfortunately a counter example might be Blaze Bayley fronting Iron Maiden. His asthma, lower natural voice type and probably the stress from fronting Iron Maiden didn't allow him to portray that song as convincingly (at least when I saw him live with Maiden). That's not to say he's mot a good vocalist, hes a far better singer than Lemmy, but once again its not all about range (as Blaze has higher highs and equally deep lows), and tremendous tones but he lacked that finesse needed to maneuver those songs probably due to lack of confidence at the time (again, tons of pressure and nasty allergies but hey thats how it went). So yup, you can always shuffle things around and play with things such as volume, instrumentation, key changes. Sure, some songs demand those ridiculously high notes (Ayreons amazing intro to Every body dies comes to mind) but for the most part it can be navigated. But bad sounding voice ... Eeek Doable? Yeah, Bob Dylan has a fantastic career, but then again, hes a fantastic songwriter... So it takes a lot to overcome bad tone.
