Good god, FINALLY a Smiling Friends review by someone who actually knows what they’re talking about. To be honest, I haven’t really watched too many other videos on the show outside of clips, so I can’t say, but I guess if there are people still enjoying the show who don’t really know Zach and Michael’s past, that just shows how well Smiling Friends is doing outside of their fanbases. I think another asset is that the show doesn’t really revolve around “everyone is a disgusting asshole to each other” to substitute black comedy. Charlie isn’t depicted as an outright asshole, he’s just uninvested and cynical, while Pim and The Boss generally do mean well despite the latter being fucking terrifying.
@raydgreenwald7788

I wouldn’t say totally uninvested, he more is a believer of long-term self improvement being the way to happiness, which conflicts with Pim who believes happiness is experiences and relationships.

This is one thing I really hate about shows like Rick and Morty and Family Guy. The whole family is toxic to each other and so are basically all the characters. The joke is basically “everyone hate on Jerry” or “everyone hate on Meg” etc. over and over. It gets old and boring very fast.

@@brandonclarke436 To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

This is it. THIS is the video I wish I had made on Smiling Friends. So many of these points came flooding through my mind as disconnected thoughts and reactions while watching this series, and when attempting to script it out, I repeatedly failed to communicate what makes this show so special. It's one of a kind, such a triumph for online creators, and a love letter to Newgrounds and online culture that I've never before seen adapted to TV. THANK YOU for this measured and insightful look into why Smiling Friends is the best new animated adult comedy we've had in years!
@VogJam

Thanks! I was kind of lucky on the script because everything just seemed to come together once I got the intro done. That through-line from NG to KZfaq to their other projects leading up to Smiling Friends is such a genuine story and seeing the Newgrounds DNA still present in the final show, like you said, that’s what makes it one of a kind. btw, I saw your video on the greatest film trilogy of all time last week and it reminded me I’m well past due a rewatch. Amazing stuff, loved hearing about the stories about the crew and designers. There’s such a huge difference between simply knowing that movies are these big, complicated things, and actually recognising the individual efforts of people doing weird things like running a 24-hour hairy foot oven to keep production rolling, you got that across so well.

My favorite thing about SF (despite what Zach says) is the underlying philosophy of anti-nihilism. It’d be easy to go with the contemporary adult animation standard of “lol nothing matters” but SF always positions itself as a fundamentally positive “actually, improving yourself and being happy matters.” And also I like when Shrimp screams.

What I find most interesting about the show, is how sincere it is. So much of tv adult animation is drenched in nihilism and irony. But I SF they genuinely are trying to make people smile and the world is insane but not all mean spirited. . Especially compared to Adult Swim animation that can often just be as fucked up as possible for the sake of it, but while there are some of these kinds of jokes in the show it isn't reliant on them for the humor. And to think this is coming from tenured Newgrounds/KZfaq comedy animators and the psychicpebbles guy...

Original series is always better than syndication and like how I feel Henry stickmin or among us is a love letter to flash games this feels like a love letter to flash animation. They are shows that break the mold from the establishment that has been the status quo of adult animation for years.

Definitely seems like SF is finding its core audience and hopefully it’ll spread further, the fact that it’s got so many connections to the flash animation scene is even better. Honestly Smiling Friends is everything I sort of wished Rick and Morty was going to be. Because I first started watching thinking it'd be episodic random sci-fi chaos with crazy shit happening every episode where you could just laugh and have a good time, but then almost instantly a plot and lore started getting attached and I dropped the show instantly after the first Season. But Smiling Friends fills the gap that nobody seems to want to fill anymore and that's just having some dumb fun. It's not trying to make a greater statement or philosophical revelation. While shows like Family Guy and Paradise PD are what I like to call "adult cartoons made for kids", Smiling Friends is a kids cartoon made for adults: the characters actually care for one another and don't hate each other, the whole premise is surprisingly wholesome, and there is something of a moral taught at the end of every episode (even if it's as mundane as getting glasses). I think having Adult Swim pick up the show is also a significant key to their success. Ever since the early 2000's AS has been the go-to place for weird, bizarre, animated shows that no other network would pick up. I know I just KNOW that if this had been on any other network, then at best they would've shoe-horned them into being more like Rick and Morty, and at worst they would have made them be like every other horrible generic adult animated sitcom that is just bad Family Guy but worse.

What I personally love about the humor is that it finds that sweet spot of being weird and demented, but not so much that it feels incoherent, or that it's trying to hard, or just "random for random sake". Just perfect.

I think what’s really interesting is that most of the funniest jokes and references are things you can see in Zach’s early animations and improv bits from OneyPlays/SleepyCabin. People who are long time fans of their works can remember the origins of these weird and wonderful jokes

Honestly with out Cartoon network and Adult swim being as open to more experimental shows we've never would of gotten one of the best animation channels ever (though the CN part seems to be less open to more creative shows now days than they used to be) Adult swim gave us venture Bros, Rick and Morty, metalocylpes and moral oral some of the best written shows in any adult animation that don't just go for another family guy or Simpsons clone. Sure for every smiling friends you get a 12 oz mouse or Mr pickles (which was chosen over Zach's and Chris original pitch for a show) but even those shows take risk and are something new

My first intro into smiling friends was on youtube. Didn't know it existed, just a thumbnail. Recognized the character as I think he called it a "Greebo" on his youtube. Then heard the voice and knew it was him. Glad he got a show. Excited to actually watch it.

I appreciate Smiling Friends because as a concept it flies in the face of modern adult cartoons. Most adult comedies are content to just say "life sucks FU nothing matters" but Smiling Friends is all about making people happy and finding joy in life, and that's a bold stand to make nowadays when it's so much easier to just be another sadsack Rick and Morty adult cartoons. My favorite episode is Frowning Friends where they almost directly call out the shows that use negativity and nihilism as a brand. We need more adult cartoons willing to break this tired depression that it's got itself into.

I don't think I'd call the style of conversational comedy "improved". Zach has been known to observe archetypes of people and actions, and replicate certain conversational types as a form of comedy, like his interview with Zone Tan. I think the jokes are very much planned out, but *sound* realistic and improved because that's the joke
@rompevuevitos222

actually, after seeing Oneyplays for so long, all of this comedy feels like the same improvised comedy they use in their YT vids The show IS refined a LOT before being wrapped up, many scenes are deleted or overhauled entirely, but ultimately the comedy follows a similar pattern

When I first saw smiling firneds I didn't know much about it, then when Zach talked about it on Oneyplays I immediately went: "Holy shit, they let him actually do this!?" So far, this has been one of the best "'adult' humor" type animations to date on traditional TV. Your statements are completely spot on and I absolutely loved your video. I'm excited to see what you, Zach & Michael do next c:

It's not just about animators. Hopefully studios and networks or what have you can realize the potential of independent creators who have experience and talent that they've been honing for the past 20 years. I feel there's so many people who grew up creating during this era and it's their time to shine.
