I came over to Wexford in 2010 to stay with my Aunt and clear my head, a sort of sabbatical. Both parents from Ireland so I have some family here amd spent most Christmas holidays here so i was already familiar with the place. Anyway 14 years later, Im still here and dont think i would ever move back to London.

I am very happy to read that! As a Welsh language speaker and learner, I have met a few English who feel guilty about the Blue Books and some are even learning the language! Kudos to you, from an American from a Welsh diaspora trying to preserve my ancestors' history. I also have some Irish heritage.

I used to have a drink and many more in Mcloughlins pub in Sligo , it was small and had some of the best nights fun that I can remember , I brought a friend from California to it for a drink and he told me the next day it was the best night he ever encountered, people just sang and a band called the rubber band entertained , the instruments was a rubber band , a beer tray and whatever else that made a sound. Definitely the best pub in Ireland as far as I am concerned , that was going back about forty years though . Another thing I must point out is that you get free travel whether it be bus or train if you’re a pensioner and that covers the whole of Ireland.

Quick note : the Irish name for Dublin is Baile Átha Cliath .. which means town of the hurdle ford. Dubh Linn is where the english name comes from middle irish .. but its no longer used in irish... and yes it means dark/black pool in irish but the gaelgoirí stopped calling it that around 1365 and started to use Baile Átha Cliath which is the official name in Irish now.. . Great video x

The reason we have alot of ruined churches & monasteries is King Henry's dissolution of the Monasteries beginning in 1536 & the penal laws in Ireland beginning in 1695 in which Catholics were not allowed to practice their religion hence the churches suffered with no income. Many churches had their roofs removed.

Heartwarming to watch this video. Nowadays it's the most natural thing in the world for a couple from Essex to emmigrate to and integrate in Co. Sligo. When I was growing up in Dublin in the 1950's and 60's there was still a great deal of grudging mistrust of the English and the Irish in Britain were largely seen as hod carrying Micks. The oppressive state religion (of which my innate childhood loathing has since been vindicated) along with the nationalistic propaganda taught in schools were the main reasons for me emmigrating to Germany in 1977. It's a matter of profound joy for me to see such a natural warm reconciliation between these two cultures which have more in common than they are aware of. Enjoy your life in Ireland!

Most of my holidays were spent out on the walking trails in Ireland and the British Isles. I recommend the Dingle peninsula and the Ring of Kerry trails. @@OldHikingGeezer-lp7bu Ex-Brit here ... Like you, I am restoring a house (my mother's former home in County Carlow). I'm sure I don't need to remind you that a 26 county-wide free bus and rail pass is available to Irish residents over the age of 66 - just about to apply for mine (think you need a current PPS no., which shouldn't be an issue for you). I know rural public transport is sparse, but a free pass should allow you (I'm being very presumptuous in assuming that you are around my age) to roam at much lower cost than would be incurred in the UK. Suggest you speak to someone (eg a QFA specialising in Pension Entitlement) regarding your eligibility for age-related State Benefits too, if you haven't already done so. I'd be interested to hear how you get on, and if you have already had some interaction with State entities regarding this. Kindest Regards. PS: thank you for a superb video - really enjoyed it; now to dig out all your other ones (this was the 1st one of yours I've watched).

A really good video. Well done! It is great that you like Ireland so much. It is the best country in the world to live. But then I am Irish and therefore biased! Two things I think you mentioned: hilly roads in Ireland and, you are from Wales. Wales is a really beautiful country but I think it may be the world champion for hilly roads! I spent a week, many years ago, cycling from Fishguard to Holyhead. The roads were top quality but an unending sequence of long stretches up and down made the cycling really tough. One memorable day was spent travelling from Aberysthwyth to Devil’s Bridge along the Vale of Rheidol narrow gauge railway. Something not to be missed. Enjoy your time in Ireland and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

Yes, Wales is a beautiful country but we were only there for nine months and lived in the town of Neath whilst preparing to move to Ireland . I am originally from London but spent most of my life in the east of England. Suffolk and Norfolk, where I spent a lot of my free time make a billiards table look hilly so it is really lovely to wake up in the morning, open the bedroom curtains and see farmland of rolling hills.

The old church grounds are pre reformation churches and abbeys, small abbeys in the west that were closed during the Henry 8th period. Since most people didn’t convert, nearly none there was no use for them. After catholic emancipation in the early 1800s from about 1830 Catholic Church’s were allowed again and they were rebuilt in new French neo gothic style, the people having long forgotten the previous styles.

@@OldHikingGeezer-lp7bu And welcome to Ireland of course. Like all english people who move here, they often become more Irish than the Irish. You have to learn to allow for ups and downs and navigate through the blarney at times, especially in business matters in the west in particular, you might find it very odd at times, but be yourself and everyone will understand. It's ok to demand precision and asking people to get to the point, trades men and the like will not be precise about time and cost at times, but it is a type of patter in the language and culture and you have to search for the point. And you will be believing in the fairies in no time, they were here before us, no question.
