@@Northflowo here's some basics to understand in chords we notate each note of a scale with numbers, let's take the C major scale So the notes CDEFGAB Will be notated with each respective numbers, so the tonic (the first note of the scale) would be a 1 so you can notate the notes with 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 and so on if you go to the next octave [9; 11; 13 ...] So let's take a Cmaj chord as an example [C - E - G] the C would be 1 the E would be 3 and the G would be 5 a 7th is the 7th degree of the scale added to the chord so Cmaj7 would be [C - E - G - B] with B as the 7th If we take a minor scale, like A minor the same thing goes - notes are notated through numbers, but this time, A is the 1, so the 1 3 and 5 would be [A C E] and because it's a minor scale, it will sound minor if numbers in chords are flat or sharp you just raise the degrees up or down by a semitone (the smallest interval in the western temperament) so a C7b9 would flatten both the 7th and 9th degree Now sus chords, Charles made an entire video dedicated to them, so I advise you checking it out! Anyways hope that explains a bit of the chord vocab Music theory is fun! :D

@@bruiseleeroy7010 I do need to disagree on the emotional lessons part. I liked the show, but it ruined itself a lot, and not to mention a lot of weird choices made by the main cast. The only arc I feel had the best follow through was peridots, as it wasn’t retconned, ruined, dragged on, or forgotten while it happened and afterwords. Garnet for example, was excellent up until after the fusion reveal because they left her character development sort of in the dust and made odd decisions regarding her established character in later episodes. Musically speaking, Seven Universe was/is WAY ahead of its time. Every song is well made, well performed and speaks on some level to everyone. It deserves to be considered more than a kids' cartoon.
@Broeckchen
@Broeckchen Жыл бұрын
I disagree. Instead, it should set a new standard for what a kids' cartoon can be. Children do appreciate this kind of substance, effort and beauty! It's a shame that for so long, media producers felt it was fine to just half ass entertainment because they didn't consider children worth any of that. While watching the show there were so many moments where I cried and said "I wish someone had told/shown me this as a child! I needed to know! I needed to know but nobody told me!" And it made me happy for all the children who will grow up understanding these things. For all the kids who will tell their loved ones when they struggle with scary stuff because Steven showed them that you loved ones want to know how you feel, even if it's a lot for them to deal with! All the children who will clock deception because Pearl made a horrible, inexcusable mistake. All the children who will know the difference between love and infatuation because Garnet cleanly rebuffed the guy with a crush on her. This cartoon is SO GOOD because it was made for kids, but with respect and effort!

It was at this moment that I realised that Stronger Than You has the same chords as Just The Two Of Us, which, given the context of the character the song is about (who is basically a culmination of two characters' love), makes perfect sense. And also that it's a blast to improvise over, especially with some of the more synth-y sounds on an EWI

What's more impressive even is the importance they gave to the music and how it's ingrained in the show itself: the first character you listened to (Pearl), is represented by the piano in both incidental music and songs. So of course her solo is mostly her singing to a piano background! What's more, the bridge of her song is a progression that tends to appear in music associated to her (that kind of descending scale), and to her personality of the more serious and mellow character on the show. So effectively, every character has a characteristical "sound"! (As said by other commenters, every character is represented by an instrument). And "Love like you" is really lovely, isn't it?

If you were to do another one of these, I’ve got four suggestions: Shining Through-this one is inspired by bossa nova tracks, right up your alley. Prince Pearl’s Theme-I’m biased because a chord near the end makes me cry but it’s such a dynamic composition and it’s written for TWO pianos! Happily Ever After-great representation of the leitmotif system that the composers use in this franchise. True Kinda Love-if you thought soloing over Stronger Than You was fun…

I am partial by being a fan of the show, but the way it builds up to the full version of Love like you is so good. For those who don't know, Love like you is the end credits of the show, but the whole song never plays. Instead we got just snippets, harmonies and different instruments each and every time the show ended... pure stroke of genius, and it's no wonder that is the most streamed song, because listening to it brings catharsis
@kingsaracoon9594
@kingsaracoon9594 2 жыл бұрын
OH OH please let me talk about its development over the years because holy shit its art! For the first few seasons, we get the simple love like you melody and rebecca singing the lyrics. The first seasons are always referred to as the most lighthearted ones, since we're joined with Steven still learning everything about the gems and his powers. However as later seasons progress bringing along the plot developments of homeworld gems, pink diamond being shattered, and steven slowly uncovering Rose's past as one that wasn't as heroic as he made it out to be, "love like you" is straight up removed as an end credits song! Its instead replaced with these ominous instrumentals that's usually associated with homeworld. Diamond synths, a discordant piano melody, electric drums mixed in. You're drawn to a sense of dread as to where the story is going - after all, you started off love like you and now you get this? BUT with the heart of the crystal gems special, after Steven learns of his mom's nature and the diamonds come to earth, the end credits shift again - the final swings of the unfamiliar space orchestra dies away and we return to an opening swell of "Love Like You" playing again! Its cathartic! After years of not hearing it, we are literally given a return to the shows roots in one of the most important episodes in the show. The entire piece literally describes the flow of the story, with each section divided up to certain developments that we the audience undergo with steven. From that wonderful introduction, to pestering doubt, and finally a return to the familiar - a whole message of love and acceptance.

Steven Universe music's has so many layers not just with the theory side of things, also with how the music and theory relates to the show and the story that's being told. For example: in "it's over isn't it" the line she sings at the end of the choruses "It's over isn't it, why can't I move on" stays on the same note adding to this line the feeling of being stuck and not moving on (insane writing and attention to details). Really glad to hear you play "Love Like You" That song was especially popular, not only because it's one of the most beautiful pieces of writing in the show, but because it was the end credits theme, and since the credits are shorter than the song, different episodes would play a different section of the song... giving you just a taste of its beautiful melodies, and leaving you wanting more. And then I believe it was one of the season finales where they finally play the full tune, and it was such a powerful moment.

There's something very heartwarming to me how he says these make an incredible gateway because they _are_ in that the show was rendered(?) for a young, impressionable audience, so it's like a perfect opportunity. I feel like he would have also really enjoyed True Kinda Love, Other Friends, _maybe Both of You???_ (it's shorter than the ones I mentioned) and Here Comes a Thought. He'd probably be pleased to know that the singer of Other Friends (Sarah Stiles) _is also_ an actress known for her work in Broadway theatre. Edit: I actually forgot to mention how much I'd love for him to hear those renditions of Love Like You where it's just the ending bits from the show strung together, because there's like a specific part in it (an interlude? idk my terms) that has such a nice piano bit before the guitar that brings us back to the main theme. Best video I've found would be from Phizzy.

If you watched the show, you’d like these songs more.. For example, the first song is about pearl in love with rose quartz, who gave up her physical form to make Steven. And pearl isn’t that happy about that still, even if she loves Steven. The song is sorrowful because she still misses Rose Quartz and still grieves. Stronger then you about overcoming the obstacles. I mean, a giant hand ship crashed on their temples coast (their house of course) and beat them, “poofed” (turned back into a gem) one of the gems. Then, they were captured by them. Love like you is from my understanding, rose quartz singing about how everyone has such high thoughts about her. I assume this is before Steven was made, only to herself. There’s also some more that sound good and really can make you just enjoy the fleshed out characters more.

I don't get why it's not classified as a musical as its genre anywhere though. It's clearly a musical, characters randomly break into song in certain episodes like in Mr Greg

@@baghouse2678 It's really funny and smart, it has really good representation, and like others said it tackles some big topics in a really good way. The characters are really complex, get emotional, and are flawed. Everyone gets character development and it always feels earned. It also has fantastic music. Like, complex jazzy stuff in a few places.

My favorite Steven Universe song is probably Other Friends from the movie. I mean what's not to love about that song? It's the closest Cartoon Network has done to a quality Disney villain song. It's catchy enough to make you want to root for the bad guys (in this case, Spinel).

The music is insane especially when you watch the show. That first song also gets the melody referenced, like a quote earlier/later in the episode and its so hidden its just a total mind melt. Also I'm slightly sad Charles didn't comment the opening of stronger than you and its near replication of bill wither's 'just the two of us' which (again, going along with the story), is hella poetic way given Garnet (estelle) is singing about her being two fused gems and 'just the two of us' as a hinted intro is almost like an inside joke, poetic AF.

A lot of the credit for Steven Universe’s music has to go to Aivi and Surasshu. They’re responsible for the instrumental tracks, and though I’m not confident, I’d be willing to bet the played a large role in the accompaniment for the vocal songs, too. The melody, though, is likely (almost) always straight from Rebecca Sugar themself.
