Attack on Titan is my main source of inspiration. It’s what keeps me going. I want to make a manga of my own, though I’ll probably never be as good as Isayama.

I always tried to understand how the story was built but you rly made the process clear. I am working on my own story and this video was a solid steping stone

You actually have no idea how much this helped me. I’ve been working on writing a story that starts a lot like how Attack on Titan ends, with the war between two cultures with differing perspectives. However as I’ve written episode 4 I’ve started to feel dissatisfied because the story is too similar to Attack on Titan. Tonight Im going to do what you did in this video. I’ll come up with an idea so radically different from where I am now, and find logical and rational ways to tie it back to the place where I started, to cover over the course of the seasons. one critique I have is to keep the ending shorter. One way that the KZfaq algorithm works is it promotes videos based on how long a person stayed to watch. So if a video is getting clicked away at say 1:30 and the video is 12 minutes long, the algorithm won't support that video as much. While this video was entrancing, very good storytelling on your part, I noticed the actual content of the video ended about a minute before the actual vid did. Already the algorithm is going to be on your side based on the content, but boosting yourself that extra minute couldn't hurt. I also get wanting to thank your subscribers so maybe make it short and sweet? Or just do a separate video. Anyways, awesome video, I subscribed :)

Super enjoyable watch! I've only watched a little of AOT and was too scared to continue, but loved the story. So this is really cool to see an insight into the author's thought process

I wish you would read the manga it has even more hints and foreshadowing of what's to come even early on in the manga. But I really hope you do a follow-up video to this after the whole series ends.

Not every writer is like JK Rowling where they plan the whole story from the ending before writing. It all depends on the way they like to work, there are two types of writers: The Plotters and the Pantsers. I myself like to write so I am aware of the work methods that some writers may have preference. The kinds of writers like JK Rowling are known as plotters or Architects, they usually prefer to create detailed outlines (blueprints)and timelines about the characters and plot direction. They know how every chapter is going to go because it all leads to the final outcome. It’s more difficult to become blocked and start procrastinating when you know exactly what you have to do to get to the finish line. The disadvantage of this method is if you want to make a change along the way, it’ll be more difficult without wrecking the entire plan - you might even have to start over. There is little flexibility to this method which can cause problems when we become inspired as we work. Now the Pantsers are different from the plotters, they prefer to make up their stories as they go. They are also known as gardeners because they plant many plot points and they develop them as the story goes. It can lead to a story with very organic development, but they can suffer from plot holes and difficulties to tie up all the loose ends. They are not confined by an outline and have the freedom and flexibility to change things as they work. Writing is exciting because it’s as great a mystery to you as your future reader. Many successful writers can be labeled as the Gardener type. A good example is George R. R Martin, he didn't plan the whole story of ASOIAF, yet his books are exceptional and have many foreshadows and incredible world-building. Stephen King is another one who doesn't like to plan ahead his story before writing. But there is also the in-between of the two, they are known as Plantsers, they are a mix of Plotters and Pantsers, and I think this one suits Isayama better. Reading his manga, I have the impression that before writing he had a good idea of how he wanted to end the manga but he didn't have every single plot point planned, so he developed things as he went along. Planting some ideas here and there since chapter 1 and outlining the big picture based on that, so he could come back to them later and develop these foreshadows and Ideas with more depth. Sometimes he would have new ideas and develop them even further. I remember reading somewhere that to not get lost on his own story, sometimes he would read the whole manga again and see what loose ends he had to tie up.

In an interview somewhere, isayama said that the inspiration came from the fact that he grew in an area isolated by mountains and forest. When he venture outside he always wonder what lays beyond the forest and mountains. What if there are monsters outside and people of his village can't leave because of them. This inspiration is what makes Isayama's first concept comic of attack on titan uses forest of thick giant trees as walls to fend off titans not literal walls in the current anime and manga

Attack on Titan is truly my inspiration for my story

There is another great layer of spices will be added before its end and if I have not read the manga or if manga didn't exist at all and this story was only told to us with the series, I wouldn't imagine how this world came to be and where it is going from what we've seen on tv so far. This is art. This story is a masterpiece. Isayama is such an incredible writer. With all of the element you've mentioned, this only proves nobody else could create this but him. We're grateful for his work.

He stated it himself, and I’m currently reading through it and there are a lot of thematic parallels that you can directly point to while reading it. I would argue the walls came before the colossal titans. The story is more about freedom and free will, than about war and politics. He definitely wanted walls first, and have this caged bird theme going on, which then leads to a giant person looking into the cage, so on and so forth.

I love your video, but I don't think Isayama started by the ending. Most of the interviews suggest the opposite. He started with the idea of titans attacking a town hidden among trees, an idea that was further expanded. I'm writing a book and I find the method you propose very helpful, thanks.

I still can't imagine creating such a story with sooo much great characters in such a logical way but still hsving the biggest plot twists ever. For example historia, i wasn't even realizing she existed till season 2 and in season 3 she had such a great character development that was beginning from season one on and the key to this development was ymir, and who is this? Someone who wants historia to accept herself and stop being kind to everyone, well, who is ymir? Ymir is the reason why just 3 titan shifters came to paradis and not all 4 and here begans the part where my brain starts to explode, easy one of the best stories ever made. No doubt

An interesting tidbit how Titans were thought up: a drunk man came into Isayama's work while he was at the beginning stages of creating AoT (don't remember the full story). From that experience he realized the scariest things in the world was other humans. Thus the concept of man eating Titans came to be.

This is such an amazing video. Its super insightful too. A while back a friend of mine and I saw this Harry Potter meme (this was when Rowling was making weird shit canon, like Harry being gay and Ron Dumbledore having 7 testicles and shit), where the first book was called "Giuseppe Stromboli and the suitcase of Meatballs". We died laughing and thought it was a hilarious idea. And then by some stroke of genius we thought this could be a good Italian mafia type story. Giuseppe was the son of a murdered Mafia member, but unaware of his heritage. He ended joining a syndicate family (like the Hogwarts houses) and the main antagonist would some narc who killed his papa (Voldemort). We gave all characters mafia type names, fleshed out the whole Hogwarts/Syndicate crossover and even decided it would be better to steel this story as a Game of Thrones/Peaky Blinders type series instead of multiple movies. This is the first time I realised that we were kind of doing what you just explained. Taking known and used concepts, throwing very broad ideas towards it to give it its own distinct character and then filling in the gaps along the way. Thank you my man. I will recommend this channel to friends, have this subscription on my behalf in the meantime. Cant wait to see you grow on this platform.

This was a great video, but I think the process was a lot simpler than that. I think a lot of his inspiration just came from Norse mythology. Asgard, the celestial stronghold is surrounded by a a large, protective wall that defends them from attacks from Giants. Also in Norse mythology, Ymir was the first Giant. 👀
