Named in 1789 by the German chemist and mineralogist A.G. Werner, the name for graphite is derived from the Greek Word graphein, which means: to write. The name therefore denotes the primary use of graphite as an ingredient used to make the lead for writing pencils.

I was trying to sharpen a pencil for my daughter earlier. Being Gen X, I still like to do that with a knife. It was a brand new pencil, never before sharpened. I got to the point of wondering how far down before I hit the lead, and when 1/4 of the pencil was gone and still no lead, I put a fresh blade on my utility knife and sliced it all the way down the length, cutting it to where the lead should be. There was no lead. Not even discoloration. Somehow, this pencil made it through production without receiving any lead, and all the way to the store. I wish we could post pictures here 😂
