80% of the Singaporeans live in a HDB flat. These are government-run flats only Singaporeans (and PRs) can purchase. I talked about the grants you can get, the prices, and how it's like living in one.
Thank you Janet for adding English subs!

Ghib-san, you are walking around a third generation HDB estate, which I think from your video seems to be Sengkang. You should also do a review of the earlier generations of HDB estates. The older part of Toa Payoh would be a close to a first generation HDB estate. While Tampines would be an very good example of a second generation HDB estate.

Stan Yu he seems to be portraying Singapore’s hdbs as soviet style, old and dirty and that most Singaporeans are living in these old and poor houses funded by the government. Which I am not comfortable with. He seems not to realise that many HDBS in Singapore are occupied by millionaires themselves who don’t spend much on properties but are cash rich, or the newer HDBS with amazing interior designs. He has only been to the older housing estates.

1. Most of the areas around HDB flats are sheltered, so one can walk from bus stops, from HDB blocks to blocks without carrying an umbrella be it rain or shine. 2. Those are ceramic tiles, not marble.

"Kopi-O" means coffee without milk. "Kosong" means zero and if the term is used in drinks it means 'no sugar'. The kopi-O kosong means "coffee without milk and without sugar". That kind of coffee is very bitter but you complimented it with the sweet "ice kacang" (kacang means peanuts).

Funny thing is, there's not a single peanut in ice kacang.

For older HDB flat design, the garbage bin is located usually near the kitchen, which is even more convienent to throw rubbish. However, this also invite pest such as cockroaches, where you may saw one every few months. This is why new HDB flats garbage bin are centralised outside the corridor to keep the pest away from the house, where we usually see a cochroach in our house may once every 1-2 years at most. Town council do perodic fumigation at these centralised bin collection, which is why sometimes you do see dead cockroaches outside after the works, and there will be cleaners on standby to clear the dead pest. In the future you may see some new HDB using pneumatic waste conveyance system. Long story short, it will vaccum the waste from the HDB block without the usage of garbage collector trucks. All these improvements have come a long way

You should visit older HDB estates. They are not so nice or as clean as the one you visited. It looks Sengkang where estate planning has improved but the flats are much smaller. Also, do you know that only Singaporeans & PRs can purchase a HDB flat? You must keep it for 5 years before you can sell it on the open market. Otherwise, if you need to sell it before 5 years are up, you can only sell it back to the Govt.

Rooms are much smaller in Singapore than Japan!!. Only 5% of the Singapore population lives In a house. They call their apartments “houseâ€, actually 95% of them do not live in a house. In native speaking countries, house means A REAL HOUSE. We don’t call apartments or condos “houseâ€. That’s just bad English.

CORRECTION: Rent in HDB can go as cheap as $550-$650/person. Or even cheaper if shared with another person. $1,500 is average living expenses, including food, transport, etc. Also, the HDB SUBSIDY is NOT = FREE Cash. Because after you sell your HDB, you have to return the money to the Singapore government (CPF).
