In this episode of WoodSolutions InFocus Laurence visits a factory which produces cross laminated timber, or CLT. CLT is an engineered timber product that is quickly growing in popularity in the construction industry. With two-way action and high tolerance of shear forces, CLT panels can generally be used instead of concrete, saving huge amounts of greenhouse gas emissions. Here, Laurence sees how CLT is produced and learns more about the quality checks involved in the manufacturing process.

Thanks for watching our video! Did you get something out of it? Is there another topic about wood, wood products, or designing and building with wood that you would like us to explore? Let us know in the comments and we'll see what we can do.

Thank you for sharing Wood Solutions team. I'm so pleased to be involved with the adhesive and surface bonding agents in the engineered timber industry. I see this technology and product as a great step forward in building technology if we are serious with sustainability, resources and efficiencies in construction and energy efficiency. Thank you again with an excellent video presentation!

Greg, perhaps you can answer my question if you are still involved with Wood Solutions. In the video it was said that treated woods could be used. It is my understanding that treated wood has been found to be carcinogenic. My concern is that using that plus all the adhesives and sealants necessary to make this product will lead to a living environment with VOCs and/or possible long term health issues. Nothing was mentioned in the video to allay my concerns. What can you tell me about these things? Cheers!@@gregtreble9086

Thanks for this video. Can you give any indication on cost for factory applied AV barrier vs a membrane field applied? A percentage? I’m sure the labor costs alone a a good reason to factory apply.

Nice Video, aboviously the bottle neck for the production capacity will be the pressing in this plant. The cold pressing consumes 25-30 minutes, and only can press several boards each time, they may need more press machines.

Hello, can bamboo alone can be made as a feed stock or a maximum content in the feed stocks?. What's the criteria for the basic feedstock combination in terms of strength and other parameters?

I saw many buildings all over the world, in a structural analysis program's website, being made in CLT and I was actually curious how it is any different from the ones used in the past.

Thank you for the excellent explanation! Why is softwood more commonly used in CLT panels than hardwood?
@stanhalen247
@stanhalen247 Жыл бұрын
Softwoods grow faster than hardwoods and therefore cost less and are easier to regrow in forests.

So do CLT houses still need interior insulation or not? And is Drywall sheet rock required for interior for CLT HOUSES? I'm asking because i may consider building a house in Tasmania with CLT!
@siriosstar4789
@siriosstar4789 Жыл бұрын
Chris ,insulation requirements are based on the thickness of the panels and the climate . Wood fiber insulation panels can be attached directly over the exterior via screws . furring strips are then added vertically , also screwed in the CLT and wood paneling or plates to accept stucco can be applied . This makes for a very warm or cool house requiring very little heating or cooling .

Not a lot of info on how the smaller pieces of wood are prepped and glued together. I imagine that’s the most important part.

Friends, good afternoon! Have you ever thought to make a CLT in 2 layers, 20mm thick and 2.5×1.25 meters in size.? (Glue lamellas with a thickness of 10mm.) So that 1 person could lift them. (As OSB).

CLT that thin would not pass structural requirements to support the roof even if nailed or screwed together

Awesome. But it's kind of ironic that CLT is made in a completely pre-engineered steel building!

The use of adhesives and plastic sheeting ensure there’s still lots of oil involved in the manufacture of CLT 🙃

Why that factory was made of steel instead of wood ? :)
@DannyPocket
@DannyPocket Жыл бұрын
Because of the large spans and structural strength requirements that need to support the crane (and its load) that run the length of the factory.

I am very affraid that global warming is waking up sleepy vulcanos, increasing earthquakes tragedies as extreme weather phenomena, we can not sit and wait to lose everything, friends, you need to consider that we have to neutralize the pollution maybe not using fossil fuels for cars or trains, but airplanes for sure, we need to get reasonable, you are doing a great job Indeed

global warming isn't going to do anythign about volcanos. It will however warm the seas which disrupt the flow of currents in the ocean and increase the veracity of hurricanes.
