In this episode of Masterworks: Expert Voices, renowned art historian David Anfam explores the radical genius of Jackson Pollock, whose pouring and dripping technique redefined what the world understood painting to be. Filmed on location at the extraordinary Pollock-Krasner House in East Hampton New York, we see the studio-and paint-splattered floor-where Pollock created his most celebrated works. "Number 32, 1949” will be offered as an important highlight of Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 16 May 2018.

One of the best videos I have seen on Jackson. He really was an innovator. Alcoholism, like any addiction, is a symptom of something deeper. As an artist myself, any addictions that affect my art, have had to go. In the end, I find, we stand alone with our creator, separate from the critics and the adoring ones. Real art comes from a place that is so sacred.

To those making negative comments : I am an artist and regularly sell my work, mainly surrealistic highly textured landscapes. I went to a fun painting night last night, where we splashed paint onto a canvas on the floor, "Jackson Pollock style". This kind of painting was invented by Pollock, a free way to express emotion and to feel a part of the painting. In some works he has placed a hand print or two, and has used bits of broken glass, etc. I have an even greater appreciation for the works of Jackson Pollock after last night. It is not easy to splash and drip paint on the canvas and end up with something you absolutely love, and that others will feel drawn to. I painted over my first attempt and was pleased with the second attempt, but it is not even remotely close to what Jackson Pollock achieved. I have painted with my grandchildren since they were 2 years old, and they have done some beautiful abstracts, some of which did include dripping paint. But I guided them with colours that look great opposite each other. If you use the wrong colours together it becomes very hard on the eyes and unappealing. Jackson Pollock knew how to use complementary colours, line, shape, direction, texture, and movement to create pieces that are pleasing to the eye, with a rhythmic flow.Try it before you judge.

Those 'art experts' that praise and 'explain' Pollock's slop don't fool anyone except themselves. They spout their pseudointellectual vomit in a similar manner that Pollock dribbled paint. If Pollock had shit on some paper, smeared it around and then puked over it, these posers in the art world would class it as a masterpiece of art.

Without a knowledge of the historical context of art, it's various movements, and how Pollock fits into that history, criticisms of his art are meaningless, and usually predictable. Educate yourself, and then even if you aren't a fan of his art, you will be informed, and at the very least understand it's significance.

I can appreciate that his work is a commentary on his time. That doesn't make the intrinsic or cultural value of the work any stronger. Societies of the future will be forced to analyze our culture based on what they see in front of them, and I would be embarrassed to have our society judged in the context of history by this kind of artwork. It lacks the content and depth that make great art timeless and poignant.

"Criticisms of his art are meaningless" is one of the most underdeveloped BS copouts I've ever seen Jackson pollocks art isn't free from Criticism no matter his history. No one is. Criticism is how we improve. I say this as an illustrator His art got popular because they were so bad. That's all there is to it. Art shouldn't be defined only by its historical context. It can be a factor but it shouldn't be every thing

Not surprising he killed himself. Just sayin’ And yet held up like a great mind. And what looks better than his art is done by decorative concrete overlay products, using squirt bottles, stamps, torches and very primitive tools. The idea that he is really studying his “piece” is what every single good craftsman does. Nothing special going on here. There is 10x more art work going into selling the idea that this is art than what he took to make it pieces. The one that deserves the art award goes to the marketing team that can sell this to intellectual idiots.

@@simple22travel11 His portfolio reveals the oddest thing of all about why these works ended up in the museums. Jackson Pollock was actually a decent artist. He had a strong grasp of classical technique, yet he dedicated his career to this. I understand that his work is a rejection of those norms and a commentary on his day and age, but that won't redeem them in they eyes of history. Our material culture will be judged as is, likely without the historical context. In fact, people of the future will try to reconstruct our culture based on these objects. What are they going to uncover in Pollock's paintings?
@chihuahuatacos1979

@@simple22travel11 Im not denying it is art, but it definitely did not take anywhere near the effort, thought, or skill that most other styles take. Its art alright, but I personally would call him a con artist, exaggerating the value of a piece of art for much more than it truly deserves. The time period proves what I am saying, with the rise of abstract art, anyone could have done this and blown up. Its that simple... to be a great artist you either gotta be the best, or be the first. He was the first to do this in a growing era, thus he blew up. He simply took advantage of a situation, and used it to grow in popularity while giving back bare amounts of effort in return. If he never did that, and I did instead, chances are I would get popular in the abstract art community too, simply cause I did it first. Despite it requiring little to no effort, thought, or artistic ability. I would not say he is super skilled at art, he is simply super skilled at manipulating the masses into assigning more value to a piece than what is deserved

@callumbreton8930
@callumbreton8930 Жыл бұрын
@@1Tpoetic you see, Keynesian economics shows that there are irrational forces within the human mind that can hold sway over entire economies. One of these forces or "animal spirits" is Stories. A few decades ago there was a major oil discovery in Mexico. In their joyous celebrations, a story spread about how this new discovery would propel Mexico into economic success. It's president, instead of trying to curb the potentially shortsighted reactions of the public, actively encouraged it. He gave patriotic speeches on it, ran campaigns of flyers and banners about it, got endorsements from around the world, even a visit from the pope himself. He even wrote a book based on Aztec mythology and the deity Quetzalcoatl, using it as a symbol of Mexicos soon to be rightful place among other world leaders, even naming his two presidential planes Quetzalcoatl I and Quetzalcoatl II. After his retirement from his post and the new president stepped up to the plate, the country discovered how much oil they had. Not even 1% of the world's entire oil trade. Not even far from their expectations, they were dead wrong. Now Mexicos economy is in one of the world's worst recessions, the drug cartels run rampant and the current presidents are left with a crisis of near unimaginable proportions. The point I'm trying to make here is that Stories, like the other four animal spirits, are terribly powerful forces indeed. All Pollock had to do was spread a story about how his new wave art would revolutionise it as a whole like the great renaissance of old and have it taken from there. Now you see what that story has done, created one of the most infamous bubble economies of our time. And when it drops, oh BOY will it drop. Confidence, the first of the animal spirits, will plummet straight into the abyss and every abstract painter who hasn't built his or her fortune yet will be left on their ass, just another art bum who never made it big. That my friend, is why
