@@ariajam6818 I’m not sure if get the point. All skin will go to waste, let’s hope they’re not using chemical dyes to achieve that dark colour. You see, it’s a niche market, not every farmer in Japan will waste their time and resources to plant pricey fruits like this. It’s like paying thousands of dollars for a handbag vs hundred for a nice one. There’s a sucker born every minute.😉🍻

These watermelon look a lot like the sugar baby melons the Mennonites grow and sell here in Pennsylvania and Maryland. They are the sweetest variety I've tasted. And I've been to 140 different countries around the world. Btw, Black Diamond watermelons are in the same family as Sugar Baby watermelons. It is known for its firm texture, very sweet taste, and dark green/black coloring. Also, they are mostly round and not the normal oblong shape as regular watermelons. This was explained to me by my friend and nearby neighbor, a Mennonite farmer.

I don't think that care and dedication make for that high price. I just that Japaneze can be extremely excentrics. Out there are people that work 10 time harder and won't get even 5% of that price for their products.

It's also because they are treated like gifts in Japan, you buy a fruit like this to give to someone you care about and want to share the experience with. Groups will also take one with them to the beach and enjoy it together in the sun.

@@TheBaldr Yeah but this is a different variety not a novelty, the flavor on these is similar to a very ripe yellow/orange flesh watermelon. (there is a decent amount of species so no point in naming one) It's quite good, it's like a watermelon meets a cantaloupe. (Rockmelon)

In Japan, fruits are always expensive. They are looking for quality not quantity, but farmers won't earn much by producing those quality products.
@FunSkipping
@FunSkipping Жыл бұрын
Not always true. There are plenty of places in Japan to get cheap fruit. But specialty fruit is more common because they can upsell it as a gift item. Or something to be enjoyed by the wealthy. Persimmons are usually reasonable in price depending on the season. apparently you can buy a tonne of them for about 5100 dollars but this singular watermelon is about 3800. I don't understand it sometimes.
