As someone who's run 5/3/1 in the past, and currently training it again....ABSORB THIS ADVICE The biggest fuck up in 5/3/1 is training too heavy. Training maxes should be light. Think years, not weeks For military pressing, I haven't hit a set under 15 reps in months. My last military press, 95 week, was 18 reps For Deadlift, it's been 85 for 10's, 90 for 8's, 95 for 6's. Stop testing maxes. That means nothing!! Glass ego training Start way too light, smash rep pr's and grow strong. Strength, endurance, size all increase Most of you won't listen, a couple will. The filthy few who train smart, and hard, reap big gains over time I told all the commercial gyms to fuck off, and train at our dojo, and my basement. Basic hard shit trumps all

I highly recommend that people also purchase beyond 5/3/1. Once you get past a few cycles of the base program and understand it there are some great variations that he mentions within the newer book that I think are much stronger than the base programming. Love the episode. You guys should try to get Wendler or maybe Matt Kroczaleski on the podcast. Would love to hear you guys interview Kroc.

The last set each week (baring the fourth) is meant to be as many reps as possible. It's a great programme; it helped me increase my deadlift by 10kgs (160>170) without using over under grip. Admittedly I had been concentrating on using a pinch grip and working my grip strength on rest days, also using pull up, chin ups and hanging leg raises to hit grip strength.

i thought j wendler had a new protocol out. something called 'boring, but big @50%', which is basically 5x3x1 + 5x10 @ 50%

that's BBB in a nutshell. That's not a new protocol though, been out for years. Definitely works.

Ive had great results with 5/3/1. The only thing i didnt like was it took a long time to get to weights that felt heavy, and i got used to not feel really heavy weight on my back. For example, i could squat 305x10, but struggled with a 365x1. Or maybe im a wussy.
@ThiVids
@ThiVids 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah I had the same thing. I'm working on building mass to support the weights better atm, and the 1st time I went back to a 3rm set, it felt so heavy with the 5+ reps sets I've been doing xD
@carsonmcneely9844
@carsonmcneely9844 10 жыл бұрын
you should look into westside..it puts a heavy load on your back once a week and forces you to progress week by week. 5/3/1 is good but I think your problem lies in spinal loading. Check it out and inform yourself. Good luck

I think Jim's best program is 531 for Powerlifting. It's focused more towards max strength. If you tend to focus more on hitting repetitions (because maybe it suits you), don't be surprised when you feel awkward going for a single. You must lift heavy frequently to get good at it. It's a skill.
@jdhpowerlifting
@jdhpowerlifting 10 жыл бұрын
Awkward describes my 1rm perfectly. Every time i go "heavy" i can never set up right and when i low bar squatted the bar always slide up from my lower delts to my traps which put me in some compromising positions. I've competed in several lift meets and the same thing always happens.

Jarrett Helton I think the huge intimidation your body has towards the weight could be a factor. It's like "BRACE FOR IMPACT!" lol.

I am currently working the stronglifts 5x5 and I was considering doing 531 ..what do you guys think of the stronglifts program compared to 531?
@MrCheunce
@MrCheunce 10 жыл бұрын
Are you improving you lifts on 5x5? How long have you been on 5x5? There are no big difference between the program. It is just different flavors. Try 5x5 for at least 6 month before trying something else. I like 531 better, but that is just me. I would probably get the same gains with 5x5.
@hkaszowi

Well I weigh 156 but I weighed 145 when I started..I squat 238531, bench 195, OHP 130 and deadlift 320 so far. I feel like I gained some strength in some areas but not in others such as bench, so far I've been stuck at 285 on my squats for a while now ...I think its been 4or 5 months since I've been doing 5x5. I mostly do 3x5 on all my lifts and am about to switch to either 3x3or 1x5. Thanks for the advice.
@hkaszowi
@hkaszowi 10 жыл бұрын
Sorry i meant 285 on the squat.
@MrCheunce
@MrCheunce 10 жыл бұрын
Henry Kaszowicz My bench and press have not been going that good on 5/3/1 either, so it is not a magic bullet. But since you have tried 5x5 for 4-5 month I think it is okay to switch and try 5/3/1 and do that for 4-5 months. 5/3/1 feels realy easy the first couple of cycles but dot be tempted to raise you training max. Just follow the program. Good luck.

These guys don't understand the program very well. "It's been years since I've read the program"......... You rep out the last set most of the time.....You don't just build up to a heavy single on the last week. You do the prescribed weight for the reps you can get, then have the option to work up.

And block pulls are a much better option that rack pulls. Feels much closer than a conventional from the floor than a rack pull would.

Thumbs down, guys.You've missed some really crucial (and fundamental!) aspects of Wendlers 531 program in here. By not doing your homework, you've failed to give this excellent program the respect it deserves and misinformed over 35K crossfit frothers.
