PS: Recommend Johann Rothman’s latest book called Project Lifecycles of her risk-based requirements model for defining 4 lifecycles (project approaches). Interesting and may provide more insights on how to ‘setup/use’ Jira for each.

Thanks Tomasz - excellent insights and discussion. Specifically the points on which delivery (project) approach Jira is specifically designed for. I have huge challenges trying to model it for different approaches for different departments. What I find most challenging is helping departments represent the right ‘work items’ to issue types, based on the various approaches. E.g. for waterfall (serial) lifecycles, the Jira issues are a representation of a WBS and tasks. For teams managing external-facing Products (SoW/Value Stream), they need to represent their work-items in value or outcome-based terms, aligned to agile. Can you please share your views and experience of this, and how to you approach this? Thanks

Connecting those 2 worlds is always a challenge. We usually do it with the help of some Jira Apps, like BigPicture. The most basic question here is: "what can be used as a universal measurement of progress?". If your company can answer this, then you can start cracking. It varies between different organizations we're working with. Some use hours spent, some use closed tickets, some use a more elaborate progress defined by a custom algorythm. All in all it's like in mathematics. You need to compile everything to the same denominator. We do this as part of our services.
