11:11 The man who saved Josuke in the past was a Yanki. A type of high school-aged biker gang that was common in real life 1980s Japan that often wore pompadors and long, colorful jackets. They mostly disappeared in the 90s and were considered goofy and outdated. This scene was to explain why Araki chose to make the main character have a very uncool (at the time of writing) design. This is context that is lost in translation to English, but is very easily understood in Japan. As Yanki Gangs did not exist outside of Japan. It is not a dropped time travel plot thread.

I was one of those people who thought Josuke's backstory was about time travel. Josuke's Stand Ability allowed him to "reverse" the current state of an object he made contact with. Because both Jotaro and Dio could stop time, I saw Josuke's power as a time-based Stand ability too. When Josuke's backstory was revealed, I thought he pushed his Stand ability to his limit and time travel into the past to save his younger self. Even when Kira unlocked Bites the Dust (another Time-Based Stand ability), I thought that moment where Josuke going back in time was going to happen.... turns out it was really some random guy who saved him and his mom.

You genuinely don't get why people thought two characters with the same silhouette were the same person? In JoJo, a story where time travel would be a pretty natural thing to randomly add into the story? I would say both perspectives are correct. In Part 4, it is still just “battle people until you get to your goal” and it is more aimless in that the first third and the first half of the last third of Diamond is Unbreakable is also not focused simply because Kira is not within the sights of the main group and/or escaped, but on the other hand it is not a straight shot towards killing Kira and somehow fighting the specific stand user they battle do help them kill Kira. At some point in the part Morioh begins to feel like its own separate character who's just as weird as all of its inhabitants and who also sees Kira as a tumor to be excised. I think it's a shame there isn't more discussion around the actual writing in JoJo's Bizarre Adventures. It seems most of the discussion is always around memes and funny gags but Araki really is a great writer. Araki may not write as tight a plot as Oda or whoever but the way he ties all the bizarre concepts in his work together with the overarching themes and characters is severely overlooked. The "funny" villain monologues in the series aren't just there for laughs but actually serve purpose in character motives and the overall theme. Which in my opinion is what storytelling is all about. Your story can be as tight and your characters can be super in depth but if the story exist just to exist without purpose then it all means nothing. I can overlook minor plot inconsistencies in JoJo because the themes and meaning of it all is always consistent and the way Araki executes it all is great.
@CoolManCoolMan123
@CoolManCoolMan123 11 ай бұрын
But like, what is there to talk about writing? Stands are considered the best power system ever and that's it. The plots and stories are nothing groundbreaking, it's how those are executed makes them so good. Besides, JoJo's main talks are about how fights work with science and actually thinking how they would be able to manage the situation and defeat the villain along with stands as mentioned above. That's what's mostly talked about writing section. Preservation vs destruction (for Josuke and Kira), Devil vs the son of God(Diavolo and Giorno) and other Christian themes are, as a non Christian (you can guess from my name what's my religion) useless for me atleast.
@mafi2924
@mafi2924 11 ай бұрын
@@CoolManCoolMan123 I actually don't think stands as a power system are all that crazy good and the fights in JoJo are all almost entirely pseudo science bullshit. That's not to hate on the fights I really enjoy them, but not for scenarios more for the crazy postures and body horror that Araki can illustrate because of it. I'd argue that the writing is really interesting in it's themes and how it's implemented into every aspect from character designs to motives and artwork. I'm not a Christian either but that does not stop me from appreciating the work itself. Many great pieces of art throughout history are influenced by religions that I have no belief in. I understand why a lot of people don't think the writing in JoJo's bizarre adventure isn't anything special. Although for me personally I think there is a lot to be said about it's loose structure, things may not tie together on the surface but because the consistent themes throughout, it is vague enough to warrant discussion that I don't think is being had enough in the fanbase because everyone else is focused on memes and stuff. anyway yeah

Imo JoJo is the greatest Shonen/Seinin Manga ever. Its stories are mature and even at times emotionally brutal, yet can effortlessly flow into murderously funny. Its fights are unique yet the mist realistic, and I adore the factor of IQ being a very important area in every fight. The real-world kinks are genuinely perfectly executed, from concepts such as Rykiels stand, all the way to the links between the characters and the name of their stands. Every Main JoJo is bare minimum great to follow, and at peak literally flawlessly written. They're relatable in a bizarre setting and it really draws you into the story so much that locations in the real-world are known as JoJo locations. BUT in my opinion, the key factor to JoJos succes in my opinion is the villains. Holy shit. I've NEVER seen a fictional story with such a consistently perfect execution of multiple villains, especially with mist of them having a very short actual presence in the story. I know that "oh Tooru is trash rock human ahhhh" BUT it was Arakis attempt at a twist villain, and each time I look back at it, I realise that it was performed REALLY WELL. The simple twist that Tooru is less of a person and more of a manipulative force taking the form of an entity that has morphed and warped the town of Morioh into a sick version of itself LITERALLY DESCRIBES THE ROCK HUMANS TO A TEE. Tooru represents what a rock human is. And this is the worst written villain. When you go on to villains such as Diavolo, Kira and in that truly perfect tier, where Valentine and (imo) Pucci reside, you truly see the impact of a perfect villain. The story doesn't work if the villain is ANYTHING else apart from Valentine in part 7 As of right now, part 9 has just started. I've read the 1st chapter and it's already had, in my opinion, the best start out of any of the JoJo manga. Everything is pitch-perfect

berserk is better. I'm sorry but this isn't even an argument. The realistic themes of berserk is what makes it stand far and above every other shonen/seinen out there. Not only are they realistic, but there's something you can relate with deep inside that actually matters in the story. It also has the best artwork and creature design in any manga/anime, bar none. Guts is the best protagonist and griffith is the best antagonist tied with johan from monster. I love jojo, it's my second favorite manga series behind berserk, but berserk manages to transcend the common troupes that hold back shonen/seinen and manages to write what genuienly feels like one of the greatest pieces of fiction ever told. Also tooru is inexcusably bad, it's not even an argument. Yes it was his ATTEMPT at a twist villain, however he already did that with diavolo and it worked far better. Tooru was never built up, nor is he compelling throughout anywhere in the story. The best thing I can say about him is that his stand is absolutely incredible, it's complex and raises stakes very well, but that's it. Dio is also a generic one dimensional villain, despite being iconic

tbh (I feel like I am a very small minority) but I think one of Araki's best parts is Part 8 (there is just something about it) and moreso with Kaato Higashikata (I love how everything about her connects, which I could go on about forever, lol [I am the number 1 Kaato fan for a reason]) but I really think that Kaato is one of JJBA's best characters; there is just something about her that feels so human, yes she has done bad things; really bad things, but from what we see she is a genuinely loving person (towards her family) and even within "Kaato's Attack" I feel like she gets humanized even more; she isnt some irredeemable monster, nor is she this perfect saint, she is a person, and I think she is really a testament to how Araki's "side" characters also improved over time, going from one off jokes or entirely evil to complex people who you can feel for and understand

Steel Ball Run is one of the stories I hold in the highest regard. It, along with seldom few above it. An absolute master-class as a work of art that deserves to be passed down for generations to come. Read Jojo's if you have not. Watching Araki continuously grow as a creative is genuinely satisfying to watch develop over time, and at the very least it stays entertaining throughout the earliest parts. There's always something to like in every Part of Jojo's, even the Parts that end up at the bottom of the pack in terms of quality... and then Steel Ball Run blows the lid off of what you thought to be possible when you get to it. I love Gyro. Also Johnny, but especially Gyro. Gyro is and was a beautiful man until the very end, and his lessons apply directly to how a good life ought to be lived. Again, beautiful.

not "simply because p1 is the origin", by itself is an excellent reimagination of Bram Stoker's Dracula, plus the care and dedication David's Production give it got to keep a story so incredibly classic, fresh for toy today standards and argubly better than some shonen of their time (anime), "Jonathan being extremely one dimensional" he only becomes truly determined to defeat him after the "how many slices of breads line", becomes the second most badass JoJo after recieving Zeppeli's power and despite everything his shitty brother did he still spares tears of sadness for him the characters aren't in any way simpler than in p2, understanding the source material that inspired the story gives them more lawyers even, like George protecting the one who stole from him, being heavily based on Les Miserables beginning Im in now way saying that is the best part or even better than any of the following ones, just that is incredibly overlooked and reducted to being a simpler work that it actually is PS: is funny how some think that Dio is a simple evil dude, while appraising Diego, being the totallity of the character that is Diego, a reboot of just a tiny part of Dio, specifically the Dio from the first 3 episodes of Phantom Blood from his infancy to the moment when he loses his humanity; Dio (P1 to P6) is up to P8 easily the most complex and deep jojo antagonist
@samueloak1600
@samueloak1600 Жыл бұрын
JoJo was determined to defeat Dio ever since he killed George, and DIO isn't that deep or complex either, it's just that Araki does many things with the character, but they aren't satisfyingly tied up imo DIO in Part VI genuinely seems like a different person, and I think Pucci carries the "Heaven" theme better, so he's most definitely deeper I agree with all your other points wrt Phantom Blood though, except for DP's adaptation: although it refreshed the part, it also heavily cut down on it, removing key scenes such as Danny's backstory and dialogue between Erina and JoJo. I even think it's because of this that Phantom Blood is so underrated

I think that someone who went through just as much character development as Jolyne, maybe even more, was Polnareff. That dude went from only wanting to join the crusaders because he wanted to avenge his sister, to a man who was willing to die for his friends. Then in part 5, he became a shell of his former self, broken and beaten yet still fighting to keep the flames of hope alive and deliver the arrow to Giorno. I’m not saying that he was written better than Jolyne, but he did do it first.

I think what makes Araki a genius are not only the amazing characters, villains, and how well the setting and time period works within the story, but it's how amazing the Stands really are, the fights' structure can get repetitive sometimes, but is so creative, not only the Stand's abilities, but how well Araki writes the conflicts, it's like a puzzle that the character has to solve, it's like he is always challenging himself as a creator.

Maybe it’s coping, but smaller things like josukes savoir and okuyasus father were small plot points used to establish the characters and their motives, they weren’t really forgotten, they naturally ran their course and ended. Saying we didn’t get to see okuyasus father be cured or something feels like a mute point, since in the narrative they even explained why they stopped trying to cure him. And Josukes savior was never meant to be a major plot point, he was meant to be vague, implying that josukes hero was just an average high school delinquent; and that level of heroism and goodness can exist in anyone, which the good members of morioh have, using that goodness to battle Kira’s evil. No offense, but honestly this videos feels slightly unfair to the earlier parts. Very slightly, but maybe I’m just nit picking

This is such a basic bitch understanding of everything - "this time Araki added character which means good, this time Araki added plot which means even gooder" But you have to ignore any kind of thematic depth in order for this video to hold together. Yes, the guy who saved Josuke is just some random dude after whom Josuke models his appearance, because Araki wanted to tell a story about how acts of good and kindness can inspire others and that appearances are deceiving - a delinquent can have a heart of gold and a well mannered guy in a suit can be a murderer.

Especially the character that he created in Jonathan, he is the embodiment of every JoJo from 2-6, with their righteous spirits and sense of justice. They are all heroes of good with more layers to their character tacked on top. which is amazing that in part 7 and 8, the main jojos are more nuanced and I can see that also becoming the case with the new one in part 9. great video

Your Part 4 takes seem to come from low attention. It is clear that the invisible baby was not only set up to present a bizarre scenario like other episodes in Part 4, but the narrative context was that Josuke didn't accept Joseph as his father since he left his family alone and abondened them. Joseph proving his willingness to give himself up to find the baby showed Josuke a sight of Joseph he didn't thought up, his caring personality to do the good at the end of the day. Furthermore, Joseph takes care of the child as the story goes on which makes a point that Joseph CAN be a proper father despite Josuke disbelieving it. Okuyasu's father wasn't meant to be healed since the search was a timely conclusion from the circumstances they were set in. On the other hand, they understood what the father was trying really to protect (the picture of his family) and Okuyasu and his brother felt closer towards their father because of it, that's why they've accepted his fate. The Josuke time travel shenanigang is a horrible take. It's obvious it's just a mere explanation why Josuke had his hair how he had. It'd have many time paradox plot holes if it were to be actual time traveling, neither is it possible in the limits of Bites to dust abillities.

I mean yeah I didn't think that Josuke's saviour was Josuke because it's explicitly stated that they only have the same hair because Josuke based his hair off of his saviour. It's hard to call it an unresolved plot hole because the hair is the only similarity they have and it's explained why they have the same hair, they have different pins, they have different school uniforms, they have different shirts, Araki stated in an interview 1 week after the chapter came out that Josuke's saviour isn't Josuke. Also if it was Josuke who saved himself and not just a random delinquent don't you think that kinda ruins the golden heart of Morioh theme?
@Nastara

Yup. Araki did it that way because Josuke and Kiochi have no idea who this guy was. And that is ok. That random act of kindness is beautiful. My favorite aspect of Part 5 is theme. The themes of reaching the truth and resolve are very engaging and makes the villan's defeat that much more interesting. Amazing analysis! I have been thinking about Jojo for quite some time recently because of my experience with it. I first watched Jojo when I was a freshman in highschool and as fast as I could watched parts 1-3 and watched part 4 as it aired, and after that I read parts 5-7 in a similar blaze as I was so enraptured by Araki's unique style. Years later, I am trying to reevaluate my former, more juvenile thoughts on the series with a better grasp of many different things and the experiences I have found myself with now. For me, this means a thorough literary analysis of the series and I don't think I could have thought of a better way to put the growth of Jojo. While I don't know your experience with the series, the development of the series is one that I cannot divorce from my own development, which adds to my enjoyment of the series as I am able to see my own personal journey within the very structure of Jojo itself. Additionally, I like to view parts 1-3 and parts 4-6 as semi-separate story cycles focusing on the direct results of Dio's actions and the lasting generational trauma respectively, and while most likely a result of the natural structure of the overall story rather than the intended way to interpret the story, I still feel is an interesting perspective. While I have not read Jojolion and so cannot say how it and Steel Ball Run fit into this interpretation, I am excited to see how The Jojolands could help bring the third cycle to completion.

I thought I recognized that voice, Mr. Morj lol. This video is great because it made me realize something. I used to try to write stories a long time ago but I tried to include all the things that a "good story" is supposed to have and it was just too much. Trying to come up with plot, intersting plot points, character arcs, themes, etc, and having to write it well is just too much especially if you're starting out. But Araki broke all that down and mastered each thing, one at a time. And though his stories didn't have all the "needed elements of story" his were still amazing. So that just goes to show that you don't need all of those things. You can just take your time to master things one at a time and your stories and skill will improve over time rather than trying to carry that huge burden all at once. I wonder if you could include Araki's original story in this? I recall it was also a pretty simple story and the art wasn't what it would became later, so maybe he improved as an artist and planted those seeds of greatness.

About the "Josuke look alive". He factually IS a Josuke look alike. It's literally not a dropped plot thread at all. Yes, most people assumed he was Josuke from the future, but that was us overthinking things and just making a wrong assumption. Josuke MODELED himself after that man, which is why he has the same hairstyle. They live in the same town, and that guy is clearly a high schooler, so they go to the same school which is why they're wearing the same clothes. Except they aren't even wearing the same clothes, because the man in the flashback is missing several identifiers that Josuke himself wears, most notably his pins. So that person is factually and definitively not a "dropped plot point", you don't even need to be a hardcore defender to say that. You just need to actually listen to the reasoning why it can't be Josuke.

The pins are a good point but why the hell was someone injured on the side of the road in a blizzard in the first place? Also Josuke's injuries in the battle with Kira closely match that of the person that saved him. I've seen the theory that originally Kira's ability would send Josuke back to save his younger self but Araki decided against it. Tbh it doesn't matter to me, part 4 is my favourite but it definitely seems weird, like if it was supposed to not be Josuke I feel like Araki should have made his outfit very different and not have him be injured.

@@alderstifen7738 That exact question was brought up in one of Hamon Beat's videos. Like straight up, he answers both why someone was injured randomly (he's a delinquent), and why the injuries match up (they don't)
@alderstifen7738
@alderstifen7738 Жыл бұрын
@@aneonfoxtribute That's kind of a stretch to say someone has injuries just cause they're "a delinquent." It's also not really about justifying why the character has them, its why Araki made those decisions in the first place. Making the character wear a uniform instead of another different outfit is what makes this a debateable scenario. I think its worth realizing that this could have been entirely avoided had the character not resembled Josuke whatsoever besides the hair, but it was intentionally drawn to be similiar to him.
@aneonfoxtribute
@aneonfoxtribute Жыл бұрын
@@alderstifen7738 I disagree, I think it would make sense if he didn't wear that uniform. Because as I said in my original post, he's obviously someone who goes to the same school as Josuke, so obviously he's wearing the same school uniform.

absolutely loved this video morj!!! two small nitpicks/differences in interpretation(?): 1. the rokakakas are not connected to the holy corpse (at least at first) - the only rokakaka fruit that is connected is the one fusing josefumi and kira under the walleyes 2. imo the overarching plot of the new universe is the flow of all things and how the spin interacts with this flow - the finale of part 7 is all about johnny using the spin to overcome impossible odds, in early part 8 norisuke references the flow with regards to the fruit parlor and tooru at the end can manipulate it to his will and still gets defeated by what is probably the ultimate version of the spin

What i like about part 7 is before the mandom arc, Johnny was a cry baby and we were more focused on Gyro, but after the mandom arc, the story goes into Johnny's character and who he is as a person, and he is less of a cry baby

There's an important statement from araki's part to have in consideration, according to him, he only plans the beginning and the end of each part, and then comes up with everything that happens in between as he writes his stories.

That was a really old saying I'm pretty sure. For example the breaks between part 6 and 7 along with part 8 and 9 were very long. Being about 286 days and 547 days respectively which gives Araki a great deal to plan out atleast a good chunk of the middle of the story. Which is probably why part 7 is really well regarded in its writing and people are incredibly hype for what part 9 has to offer. Don't get me wrong Araki probably does change,add or remove things whenever he wants to but I don't think its the right thing to say he doesn't plan any of the story and only the start and end.

Valentine's methods and character were evil, but his goal wasn't. Johnny was a better person than Valentine in almost everyway except that his goal foe the corpse was purely selfish, while Valentine's wasn't. That's where a good bit of the grey comes in.
