I feel so bad for her. She gained fans and album sales without JYP at the age of 15. She signed to JYP and it ruined her whole career. This is a perfect example of not realising how bad a song is when we are younger but then listening to the same song as an adult we realise how inappropriate a song is. The fact that JYP also has not spoke up to defend her is gross. The fact that her family has also suffered is terrible. He’s so proud that he released a song that almost made her end her life and her family pretty much abandoned her. That’s terrible.

I feel for her. I’m genuinely surprised though that she didn’t realize how racy the song and choreography was until later. It sucks it affected her relationship with her family, but where were they at this time? They never thought to check on what she was doing during the production of this album? Even if she was 18 I feel like her parents should have been somewhat involved making sure their daughter wasn’t being taken advantage of especially because she started in the industry very young
@LaCrownedGamer

I watched the video just now, and honestly though, being 18 turning 19 I can see why someone at that age might not see the choreography as racy, there were a few spots where it was more sexual, but if you put her in a cute outfit or more covered up, the dancing itself was not overtly sexual. It feels like all the individual pieces are not overtly sexual, but adding them together: the slits in the skirts, the chopped hair, and dark video, it all combined into honestly a great visual but more mature. The lyrics I am surprised she did not see the correlation, but then again I remember singing songs that were explicitly about sex and drugs and never once bat am eye until I reheard them in my mid twenties. If she was sheltered to any of the connotations that the song presented, it is safe to say she never made those connections. (Which is why family needs to be around these young folks in the industry, they could have helped her!)

Honestly, if Kpop was international like it is now, I think there would have been a lot more folks to support and help in her defense. The Music video reminds me of the grunge era videos (think The Cranberries, No Doubt, Garbage, Hole, etc.) while the choreography and the instrumentals reminds me of a plethora of black lady groups and singles who made songs in the mid to late 90s that were critically acclaimed and inspired a lot of music (think 702, tweet, TLC, Xscape, En Vouge, Destiny's Child , Aliyah, etc) The outfit and hair were very fashionable during that time (at least in the west so I could be mistaken) Honestly this song would have been a massive hit in the west and international audiences especially during the time of its release and might have helped with the backlash she received in South Korea. I really hope she is feeling better both about herself and her career, she did not deserve all the hate she got for a song that she did not write or choreograph, and know that others see her body of work and enjoy it to this day!

Bro the backlash foe the meaning was deserved But shouldn’t have been directed at her since she’s a victim too
@LaCrownedGamer
@LaCrownedGamer Жыл бұрын
@@RiRi-ku6xz honestly the backlash was warranted to an extent but as you stated she should not have been the target of the backlash, early 2000s was a weird decade where a lot of producers really wanted to age up their young talents, especially teen girls, with the lyrics to the songs (hell they still do it now) this was a huge trend to make songs about girls turning 18, or getting with older men, or being a teen but still knowing there way around the bedroom (hell some of them I used to listen to regularly as a young teen who kinda understood what the song was saying but truly not knowing till I was much older. ) But what gets me is how little the audience actually addresses why the lyrics are harmful. This could easily be a video essay topic but I'll keeps my thoughts brief. She did not write the lyrics, and older man did, the lyrics could have still been about becoming a woman sexually, but was it really necessary to make it about an older man waiting? Why not a Romeo and Juliet situation, or her just discovering herself with a boyfriend she loves or thinks she is in love with? So many other narrative ways to play out the same topics without it being an obvious fantasy to... ill just say a certain demographic.

I remember reading a post about this on reddit quite some time ago. It was a theory that if a girl group were to perform this song either privately or publicly, it was like a 'go' signal from that gg's company that CEOs, investors and even kpop seniors in the industry could contact them and have a 'go' at their girls. I dont remember much from that post after that and I can't find it anymore. I didn't even finish reading it.

I truly cannot understand how some people cannot see why JYP is at fault for this. The thing is, the problem about this situation isn't in the song (which is a different problem in itself), the choreography or the symbolism, but to where the general public aim their backlash. Ji Yoon was doing her job by performing the concept given to her by the company. JYP was also doing his job, making hit songs and choreography. But he did not get any of the backlash from the general public about the song (that he made) or the choreography (that he made). Ji Yoon got all of the public's backlash simply by performing them. And JYP could do this all over again, without a scratch on his reputation. To those blaming Ji Yoon for ruining her own career, have you ever been given the greenlight to do something, maybe by a boss or a close friend, and the inherent action blowing up in your face? Maybe it's your own fault for not seeing the repercussions of the action, or their fault for not explicitly outlining the implications of such action. Remember, she was only 18, in the entertainment industry amongst higher ups twice her age or older. It's not like she chose her own concept, she just wanted to be successful and realistically she probably would have had little power in changing her concept had she thought it was uncomfortable or unreasonable given her previous reputation.

Companies will basically never stop doing this until some sort of a law happens. Young girls are easier to manage and manipulate and they want them young so they can mold them and get as much work from them that they can get within their first contract. And fans want to support the idols which means rewarding the company for this behaviour while allowing them to cater to creeps.

@Swduc this is from koreaboo source : “Park Jiyoon sang the song in 2000 when she was only 18 years old internationally. This may be A BIT CONFUSING Due to the age system in South Korea. Park Jiyoon was born on January 3, 1982. Following South Korea’s age system, she would’ve been 19 YEARS old in 2000, BUT AS HER birthday is considered a “ppareun” (born before the Lunar New Year), another year was Tacked on. So, she was Considered 20 YEARS OLD when the song was released, which is the legal age in Korea.”

This is why i really worry about idols that are female minors they can easily be taken advantage of. there is a huge power imbalance between the artist and company of JYP - she was trained by JYP himself , she would have no chance to say no even if she had realized, their contracts are also iron clad if you watch any show documentaries about training kpop idols often the trainees are isolated from the outside world, including their parents ...

all jokes aside i love the music jyp produces but he was just so creepy when he made this one and the way it’s still performed to this day even he performed it just irks me, it’s a good song but i feel like it only should’ve been done if the artist was completely aware of its implications and to think that a grown man made a barely legal young girl sing it just baffles me, i’m sure she knew she was going in the sexy provocative route but it’s easy to not know just exactly what the lyrics are alluding to, nothing wrong with a young (LEGAL) person to be a little flirtatious and start exploring their sexuality but the song was just too much and i really do feel for park jiyoon. but the public’s scrutiny is also undeserved like it should’ve been directed more at jyp not jiyoon but only her life was ruined because of it.

so, JYP did not ruin her career. He made a hit song, she performed and singed it and the public loved it since it sold a big amount of copies. The problem is the public enjoyed the song but thought it was “too much” anyway. It’s the public’s fault. She was not even forced to sing it. She received much popularity and much hate, that’s it. Her life was “ruined” because she couldn’t stand the hate side but most importantly because people are thirsty for drama and create it on purpose. Her relationship with their parents it’s her family fault since they’re putting their being religious over their affection for their own daughter, apparently. Also, the church playing a song to show what not to do, it’s just toxic behaviour.

@Swduc cookie was disturbing and everyone cared, the whole comment section was filled with people saying negative stuff about the song, except for people that said that it’s a bop, since it does sound good. I’m not against minors having sensual concepts but i can’t stand the sexual concepts and that’s something to work on, definitely. The thing is, it’s literally impossible to do anything about it because: 1. people want good music, as long as it sounds good they’re satisfied (and i kinda agree on that) 2. people won’t unite and protest or whatever for something like this 3. companies can just not give a shit and nothing is gonna change, groups are not gonna flop because of that 4. nobody thinks is right to do something negative like that because it unjustly affects the group rather than the company (the people who have the most issues with this stuff, like with Lesserafim controversial choreo, are just fans rather than the girl themselves. Not talking for lesserafim or all groups but often it’s obvious how they don’t really care but fans blow everything up) 5. Companies are used to fans going crazy over nothing, they kinda don’t care anymore Something must be done but it’s impossible.

Coming of Age was amazing and the choreography some of the finest I had ever witnessed at the time. I feel the majority hold her in the highest esteem to this day. I never get tired of the video!

I am so sorry that the song had such a negative impact on Park Ji Yoon's life. But I have to admit that I like the song.

Jyp wrote the lyrics himself for a child he knew was still very much young. This is disturbing and disgusting. He took advantage of her. The fact that he had the thought to make the song about an older man grooming a young girl is absolutely vile. And he twisted it by making it a song from the girls perspective to make it more digestsble and accepted. This is disturbing. She deserves a huge public apology and compensation.

... it's about a man that groomed a child. Jyp switched the perspective to a young girl "wanting it" to make it seem like it's consensual, accepted, and digestible for the public... this song is trash once you know the meaning of it.

So, if a producer made a hit-song, and the singer get a lot of fame and fans, but the society of her county betray her and gave her depression, is the producer's fault?, that don't make a lot of sense lol, this video feels like a hater video.
