Okay, Knuckles as a mole makes the scoop-shaped "knuckle claws" A LOT more sensical, tbh. I never really understood why an Echidna would have those, but a mole has to dig everywhere so... yeah, makes a lot more sense. Very cool to learn of this history and see all these unused designs! Thanks for sharing!

Infact the early knuckles desgin was later used for a sonic fan game called sonic galactic and the characters name is tunnel the mole

1:09 it looks like knuckles was to have an exclusive zone 5 (sonics would be flying battery)
