The T. rex graphic is misleading, though. African bush elephants stand 11 ft tall, while T. rex could reach almost double that height at 20 ft. They weigh about the same however, as T. rex was more lean for its size because of its role as a hunter.

The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C., U.S.A., has the largest elephant ever recorded on display in the lobby. It stands 13 ft (4 m) high. Putting that in perspective, the average adult man in the U.S. stands 5' 9" tall (176 cm). In other words, one man standing on the other man's shoulders still wouldn't be able to look that beast in the eye. Even more everyday specimens are huge; look up photos of African elephants online and you'll see tons of photos of elephants standing beside cars that could easily drive underneath the animal's belly without touching.

@@pixelfox9666 Yeah, we have a hard time grasping size and volume, like how much size difference there is between a muscular guy like me at 5'10, next to another muscular guy that's 6'4, it's a whole different thing, not just height, we don't really imagine volume and mass accurately. If a T-Rex was slightly larger than an elephant, that's still too big and too dangerous for a land predator, if not even elephants are safe, Jesus Christ.

If anyone travels too Iceland i can definately recommend the Reykevik Whale Musuem which is filled with life sized replicas of the all the whales found in the northern hemisphere including the Blue and Sperm whales. It really makes you feel so very small compared to these amazing creatures.

That's awesome! The American Museum of Natural History in New york city also has a lifesize blue whale replica hanging from the ceiling in the ocean hall. It's enormous, blew my mind many times as a kid

I've been to a similar museum in Norway. They had a 1:1 replica of a blue whale hung from the ceiling. It's really something else to see it in person. I've seen many videos of blue whales, but none of them have managed to convey the imposing awesomeness of that replica.

Trey the explainer recently put out a video on sharks that had many such sad facts. One example was a fish that was thought to be a fast-breeding species because of their range and numbers, until they were fished to collapse. It was only then that they were found to live for decades, and both breed and grow super slowly. Basically, mankind fished off the adults of a very slow reproducing species. I really enjoyed the fact that the first animal that you mentioned as "an animal that everyone has seen before" was the horse. I am from Poland and there is a famous definition of the horse from an XVIII century encyclopedia that literally states "the horse, as it is, is seen by everyone".

Most people who haven't been up close to even what would be considered 'average' animals fail to truly understand their size--people stand next to horses, cows, wolves, full grown pigs, for the first time and are stunned by how dwarfed they are. Seeing is truly believing, especially for something so unfathomably large.

I was lucky to see 3 blue whales in Sea of Cortes, female the biggest , male escort and calf smallest . Male was trying to get between female and her calf. We were in a tiny boat, a Panga, with Richard Sears (check him out) a marine biologist. Female was HUGE 90ft weighing about 100 tons. With Richard yelling at his assistant ‘keep up Laura, keep up’ They we’re speed swimming, about 10 ft. under the water. The most EXCITING ride I’ve EVER experienced. They truly are biggest mammals that have ever lived. Their tongues weight as much as 3 bull African elephants. Heart size of a family car. Total weight 1,500 men. Beat that for stats.

This is an amazing video. The quality of the information in it is incredible. I had no idea why blue whales were able to achieve their ridiculous size, but you not only explained it clearly, you also accurately characterized the challenges of reaching such sizes as well as the the fragile balance of ecology that must exist in order to support such behemoth creatures. Like most people, before this video I labored under the misconception that baleen whales were mostly able to achieve such sizes simply because the water supported most of their weight. But of course their energy requirements would be the primary limiting factor; you are what you eat, quite literally.

Thanks for this very enlightening video. It is especially interesting to me because of an experience that I had. My wife and I were sailing the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. We we about 5 miles off shore approaching the San Jose Channel. We were sailing along nicely at about 6 knots We saw spouting a half mile or so off. About 5 minutes later a spout blew all over us. Shocked we saw a giant Blue Whale right next to us. He appeared to be about twice the size of our 46 foot sailboat. He stayed calmly next to us ( which was more that we could do) for at least 5 minuets........Right next to us! His blow hole looked like a person could easily fit down it like 2 oval manholes! He then calmly sounded and was gone. We felt him very gently brush us a time or two. During the 5 minuets. We have never been so scared and excited at the same time in all of our decades of cruising the oceans. Indeed a most magnificent creature.

very well made and researched as usual, and the topic and script are interesting as well. the computer hud really helped to put things in perspective, and the loading/codes were nice to keep it active during the periods in between clips, which I can imagine helps to cut down on time animating creatures or creating fillers for longer videos like this while avoiding visually boring motionlessness. I'm really happy to see you trying out new strategies that hopefully help a lot while retaining high quality to accompany your thorough research, excellent art style, and engaging writing.

I also think the gigantism is one of the most effective ways of avoiding predation. Even the largest toothed whales can be preyed upon by other superpredators (though generally sperm whales win fights), but pretty much nothing aside from humans can harm an adult blue whale. The evolution of larger whales also coincides with the extinction of several animals that preyed upon whales; though that also can be explained by the cooling oceans.

Wow! The details and presentation are fascinating. I found myself sharing the link with my daughters and texting various bits of info as it presented itself. For example, the massive growth, 9 lbs an hour, 200 lbs per day. We could pretty much watch them grow! And the conditions that allowed for their overall growth as a species. Great stuff.
