In a short moment of clarity, Ernest knew he broke the rules and even if he managed to survive this encounter with John Wick. He knew the High Table would come after him for breaking the rules of engagement. So he might as well let John kill him first.

Just watched the movie, perhaps the best improvised bulsshits he pulled off is the Nunchucks and a pistol, remember those armored bastards in the 3rd film, the entire sequence with them is literally just John giving them a bad case of head trauma and basically dazing them so bad, that everytime they tried to get up John will be there to give them another dose before finishing them off, one guy got hit in the head by a well placed pistol shot, knocking him down, and when he tried to get backs up John gave him another bullet induced concussion, while he beat the shit out of another guy with Nunchucks.

Well that can also be chalked up to him being disoriented and in pain, and he’s not holding the book but trying to reach for it with his last pits of strength. He attempts to get the book but is too weak to do so and dies.

I think thats part of what makes john wick so good. The movies always barely cross the line of plausibility. If you look at scenes in retrospect you can see how things can be unrealistic, but in the moment, it all seems so real and badass.
