How Litigation Hold and Retention Hold work in Exchange Online

In this session will be discussing concepts of Litigation Hold and Retention Hold. We will be discussing how an Organization can preserve the Mailboxes and Mailbox contents.
Also we will be discussing how you can bypass Managed Folder Assistant on a particular mailbox using Retention Hold.

The litigation hold on the mailbox can only be applied, If an E3 license is assigned to the mailbox. You haven't mentioned this important thing in your video.

Good info, but at 12:00 you jumped right from lit hold to retention holds without really explaining the difference between the two. you mentioned a retention hold overrides a retention policy, but does a litigation hold override a retention policy? And why use a retention hold if we can use a lit hold? Seems like they are exactly the same thing, so what's the difference between a lit hold and a retention hold? I watched this twice and I still have zero clue that the difference between a retention hold and a litigation hold is, if any difference at all

You can apply hold only on mailboxes whereas with help of retention policy you can apply it on mailboxes, sharepoint sites, MS team as well

Litigation hold preserves mailbox data only. To retain one drive data use retention policies.

May I know what is the reason of applying retention hold service for deleting unread or emails that received during employees vacation or whatsoever period?

If Retention Hold is applied on a mailbox, MFA bypasses that mailbox. That means when I am available I should be able to read my emails. Else a Retention Policy can purge Items from my mailbox if applied by Admin. I hope this clears your doubt.

I am glad you liked my contents. eDiscovery in Office 365 is a tool to take backups of mailboxes. Using this tool we can search and export contents of mailboxes using certain conditions.

When retention hold is disabled and now user wants to recover the mail's which were deleted due to retention hold disabling, we can recover the mails ?

Retention Hold applied from EAC does not retain emails. It is enabled to restrict MRM/MFA from processing the mailbox. If your query is about Retention Hold applied from SCC, then as soon as you will remove the policy, mailbox contents will be purged.

@@Office365Concepts but we lost mails as soon as we disabled retention hold while enabling in place archive ..total of 80GB only 20GB is present in purges folder. Don't know where is remaining data.

@@rajamanohar7753 If retention was disabled, that means retention policy that was applied on the mailbox got triggered. And that can be the reason of loosing emails. You can run Get-Mailboxfolderstatistics "affected user" | fl to check folders size.

@@rajamanohar7753 you can check Purges, Deletions and Discovery Hold folders. If these folders have contents, then you can recover them with the help of e-discovery or contents search. If these folders do not contain data, then I am afraid only MS can help you to get it recovered from backend.

You have mentioned that items in deleted items stays 30 days in exchange online. That is incorrect. I have my test tenant and users where I have emails in the deleted item folder for more than years. If u can edit that in the video, it will be helpful for others.

Hi, default retention period for Deleted Items folder is 30 days. If you have older emails in deleted items folder, then look for retention policies applied on your mailbox.

@Office365Concepts I have been following your videos , so resourceful and I am still learning. As an individual researcher on the topic, I can assure you the Default retention policy (mrm) has 30 day delete tag for personal folder. Unless you apply it to the Deleted Item folder, it won't automatically be applied. U r like guru, my comment is not to disrespect to anything, I'm a learner and learning everyday. Can you double check with any new tenant , Compliance center > data lifecycle management> exchange> retention tag and also retention policy. if u notice the tag personal, that means your email won't move unless u applied it.
