Wow, that does not sound like my experience with THR at all, and as a dancer and overall active person, I was in excellent condition-except for the arthritis-before surgery. Surgery and recovery were different with each leg. With the left hip, I used the walker for a day and a half. So when I had the right leg done, I expected the same. But it was nearly three weeks before the pain of putting pressure on my right leg eased to the point where I could comfortably walk without a walker. Now at about seven months out from my left hip surgery and nearly three months out from the right, I still struggle to get socks on, then leggings or joggers and finally shoes. I often have to sit down to do these things, and try to resist cheating by just crossing my ankle over the opposite knee to get my socks on. My hip flexors are still very weak from not being able to use them for about a year before surgery and then the surgery itself. Going up steps with my left leg is painful and scary. I can only lift my thighs, like in a marching position, to about a 90-degree angle. I’ve been in PT since before the first surgery, and my therapist is being great about helping me regain my balance, strength and flexibility. But he says I still can’t even sit on the floor or get up safely, which rules out yoga and dance classes for now. With only three sessions left, I’m freaking out about where to go next to get back to where I was before the arthritis got so bad. So…when this guy says patients should be putting on socks and shoes by six weeks and “completely recovered” by three months, I can’t help wondering whether he’s just delusional or trying to drum up business for himself. Regardless, it’s totally misleading and could cause people to have completely unrealistic expectations about their recovery timing from THR.
