The Non-Canon Expert explains the weaknesses inherent in the actions taken by the Sith Lords of the Rule of Two era as pointed out by the ancient Sith Lord Momin, describing the hypocrisy of seeing the error of the Jedi in devoting themselves to the Republic and not the light side, and then choosing to devote themselves to obtaining/maintaining the Empire rather than devoting themselves solely to the dark side.
This video discusses the Canon character of Lord Momin and the aspects of the Rule of Two, but does make some references to the Rule of Two as it was seen in Legends. Where the Legends is referenced, that material is located in the Darth Bane trilogy (specifically the second novel "Rule of Two") and the novel Darth Plagueis. I hope that you enjoy the video!

Tomorrow I will be posting Part 2, which will discuss how Lord Momin shows that the Rule of Two actually made the Sith Order weaker rather than strengthening it, despite its apparent successes. One day, the Sith will need a reality check. They need to realize the Jedi keep crushing them, even at the height of their power. Then draw some sane conclusions: *none* of what they tried was the right way, including Lord Momin's bigotted worship of the darkside (talk about an irony).

Hence why only killing or turning back all darkside users achieve Balance. Nothing else. The darkside is like a cancer.

One of the things Lucas did right was make Qui-Gon the example of what a Jedi should've been. The mere fact that the Jedi Order felt he was too much of a renegade is a good example of that. And also the fact that if Qui Gon hadn't died, Anakin would've had the guide he needed to become a true Jedi himself, rather than being given far too much authority and responsibility at far too young an age. So, if Qui Gon, the quintessential Jedi, serves the "living Force", what would a quintessential Sith be serving? The "dying Force" doesn't make much sense even for the edgy Dark Side, especially since the Death of the Force is something neither Jedi nor Sith desire save a particular individual. To that end... do we actually understand the Dark Side at all, as fans?

@Cian McCabe Funny how you would use a quote from the Sith Emperor, he sought to become bigger than the Force itself, to be beyond its reach, that is why he failed. You cannot become bigger than the Force itself, especially when you use the Force as often as he did. A true Sith in your eyes might bow to no one, but in the end, you will bow to the Force in a way. I did say that we must follow the will of the Force in return, but what this will entails is not clear, all we can ever truly do is take a guess. I do however agree on the Old Republic Era being the Golden Age of the Sith.

@Cian McCabe the Will of the Force do not contradicts , it's actually pretty easy to understand: it tries to balance itself , as any natural things in the world , it seeks homeostasis. One individual can receive great power from the Force , it doesn't matter which side , but if the overall scale tips to one side or the other , it will receive a "push". What Palpatine did was nothing more than inverted roles , as the sith comes in power and dwells in politics , while the jedi would go in secrecy to gain power to finish their enemy. That didn't happens with the Ancient Sith: they achieve power or loose that , but they served the Dark Side in itself , so their order never ends.

Revan simply thought out loud and said the Sith have a darwinistic society that sees brute force and wit as equaly good therefore strenght comes from both your muscles and your brain. The weak ones fall in masses- yes but for that the survivors while lower in number are better in quality compared to the Jedi. Nonetheless, quantity a quality in itself so the system is a double edged sword. Bane considered that with 2 Sith you keep the "never let your guard down" darwinistic rivalry between master & student that forces the practitioners to always give 110% but cut down all overwhelming conspiring against each other to the point were even the strongest and smartest will be brought down by a miriade of backstabers who will simply make the entire entire system collapse (again).

DeShawn McDonald I think you underestimate Plagueis’ capabilities. Based off of what we know/seen about both Bane & Plagueis, the latter has managed to mirror & even eclipse many of the formers skill with the use of the force as well as with the lightsaber. Also Sidious at the time of ROTS wasn’t even in his prime. For a fair comparison you need to have BOTH combatants to be in their peak before you can make a fair judgement & comparison. I cannot remember the comic exactly but subsequent to order 66 & during the 2nd Jedi purge, sidious cut down multiple (I think it was like 4) captured Jedi at once in 1 saber swipe with scant effort. Bane, whilst on Tython with his Apprentice Zannah battled 5 Jedi. Were it not for the combined efforts of Zannah, he most likely would not of made it out the Sith fortress alive despite being covered in obelisks & being immersed in the Aura of the dark side engulfing the planet but more specifically the fortress itself (so basically home court advantage). **Edit:** Darth Bane is an exceptionally strong force user do not get it twisted, but you guys gotta stop with the fan girl behaviour of mindlessly & illogically overpowering characters just because you like them no offence. I love Bane too, but he is not stronger than either Sidious or Plagueis during his & their prime.

It’s funny because in Legends Sidious was so devoted to the dark side that he had become the only Sith to master the dark side. He controlled the dark side and in turn it controlled him. Basically Sidious and the dark side held each other’s hands like lovers lol. So yeah, I really hope they make that Sidious more apparent in the Disney canon, as it really demonstrates just how deeply situated he was in the immense pools of the dark side. It would seem to me that Momin found a similar method of appeasing and working with the dark side. I also find it funny that Momin doesn’t just outright state that Palpatine is withholding information and instead makes himself sound ignorant of whether Sidious is actually ignorant or just playing ignorant. (The latter being true.) as Momin had spoken to Sidious through the mask. This could mean one of two things, either Momin couldn’t read Sidious (Impenetrable thoughts being Palpatine’s specialty in Legends) or he is so self-absorbed that he didn’t bother trying. It’s funny how hypocritical the Sith all are, considering Momin is showing his own hypocrisy by discussing other Sith’s hypocrisy.

What I think is funny is that the philosophy that one needs to serve the Force HAS made its way into canon. Sort of. During Rebels Kanan Jarvis had a premonition (I believe) that he was going to die. Rather than trying to fight it, he willingly sacrificed himself to the will of the Force. And was rewarded with sight to see his apprentice and love one last time. Also, I think he had an ability to exist outside the Force as himself. Which has only really been done with Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Master Yoda. This is huge. And as far as I know he never had training or searched for that ability.

I think losing to Obi-Wan has made him more careful and use more of his Force powers, even if he is less powerful than before. Thats also my personal theory on why Vader's fighting style was so conservative in Episode IV compared to say how he more aggressive he is in Rogue One and Episode V/VI. (other than the real world reasons obvioisly). Obi-Wan beat him because of Anakin's own pride and acrobatics so so when re-facing him, he makes sure to not fall for any cheap overzealous self defeating mistakes anymore.

The Sith always bothered me in how they have no rational motivation. To be powerful, for no reason, at the cost of everything they'd want from a normal life. Or to control the galaxy, for no reason beyond a desire for power. Even Momin allows himself to be controlled by the force, again, for no real directed purpose. I guess that's more an issue with writing Star Wars characters in general, and the Force. People are evil because they need to be, and have no real motivation beyond basic human evolutionary narcissism and an instinct for control.
@ZionStrickland

PlagueOfGripes one reason they try to say is that using the dark side corrupts, it forms an addiction. In Jedi, it can be a slippy slope, you use it once to make a fight easier. Then maybe you use it again, and again and again and again. For dark side users it messes with your head, making you more prone to your base emotions (it takes a strong will to constantly reassert yourself). Besides, they are (or, at least were) dark side force users besides the Sith who don’t strive for galactic domination. I also believe that it has a bit of brainwashing involved. For example, Jedi are told constantly how to act, and what is right from an early age. Sith apprentices likely go through the same thing, why else would Sith thousands of years descended from the old orders still have a burning desire to crush the Jedi? Idk, I’m tired. Pls respond and I’ll comment tomorrow after I get some sleep

You should read the Plageuis novel. Explains alot of their ideas. They are darwinists who believe conflict is the natural state of the cosmos and thus its needed to force the best out of everyone. Furthermore they favour meritocracy and believe that with their power and potential they are meant to lead the weak, ignorant masses. One should always desire to better one self (Peace [stagnation/resignation] is a lie - there is only passion[work/effort]) so they strife to gain as much power as possible, learn all what is to learn. And they (at least based on Plageuis), knowing how the life works, have the responsibility to work as architect of society with the goal of purging the lies of equality and pacifism and brining it in harmony with the natural state of the universe (which is a darwinistic cut-throat-world) so society should adept to that and become, in their eyes, strong.

Why are we allowing Momin's words to have such weight when he was defeated by a worn out and battered Rule of 2 Sith Lord? Wouldn't the force have favored him in his duel with Vader if any of his claims had been valid? Didn't he claim that the force loved him? And still, the force was used, by Vader, to crush Momin's body. It seems more clear that the force exists, that certain individuals have a stronger connection to it and that it's possible to build on that connection through experience, education and certainly through mastering your own emotions. This notion of serving the force in order to hope that it unlocks its secrets to you seems more like misplaced faith based worship. Momin is a zealot and Sidious and Vader seem practical by comparison.

The force used Anakin like a drunken prom date and dropped him twice as fast. Palpatine had ended the Sith order when he killed Hugo and every other force user in the galaxy were hiding as hard as they could. If Palpatine got bored the clones were more than capable of exterminating any stray force users for his amusement. All of Vader's time was spent crying into his helmet with occasional breaks to throw temper tantrums and get headpats from Palpatine. In the grand scheme of things all Anakin or Vader ever really did was draw attention away from Palpatine and maybe give him a laugh. Poppa Palps handled his own shit no problem.

The Rule of Two had nothing to do with what Momin is blathering about, it was put in place to root out the weakness and infighting plaguing the Sith in Bane's time, to let the truly powerful rise to the top and achieve things that could not be achieved by being held back by constant betrayal.
@nendymion
@nendymion 5 жыл бұрын
The way I always understood it was that the "Rule of Two" was put into place because Bane hypothesized that the Dark Side was not in fact infinite and was rather finite. So having multiple Sith caused the power to spread thin and thus create generally weak Sith Lords, while having just two would allow the Dark Side to focus through just those two instead of the many and consequently make the far stronger than if the force was spread through the many.

I can't help but wonder how momin would go about things if he was able to defeat Vader. He just doesn't seem to care about ruling over the Galaxy , or getting revenge. He'd certainly not align himself with palpatine but I don't think he'd bother hunting him down either. My guess is he would create more perverse monuments to the dark side across the stars, the empire and rebels alike suffering horrifying fates at its expense. Sidious might try to send inquisitors but they would be no match for the AINCEnt Sith. Any Jedi left would probably be too deep in hiding or not nearly powerful enough to stop him. It would be up to sidious to stop the galactic mass murderer from ruining HIS master piece, but he'd half to be careful as hell about it. Not because momin is more powerful than sidious he's not, but momin could very easily reveal that the emperor is a Sith and ruin things even further.

Those that tried to control the darkside some succeed some fail those that fail end up rotting and aging faster that’s why some Sith were rotting there bodies becoming rotten and such some not all 3. The ones who put in more than enough work the darkside serves u like you can even cheat death Darth Vader Darth sidious Darth vitiate and Darth bane had this they controlled the darkside and that’s why they are legends to this day the point is the rule of two works it’s perfect for the Sith because guess what it took two Sith to kill 10s of thousands of Jedi how cool is that clearly the rule of two is badass and helped build up Darth Sidious and Darth Vader up

In the end...his own utter and blind commitment to his own philosophy: like Legends character Nihlius: made him "immortal" but extremely limited in THOUGHT and PHILOSOPHY (not as bad as Nihlius of course whose the metaphor for said state vs a living being within it). And his overconfidence of his own commitment: the assumption the Darkside would serve/save/protect him: failed him, in the face of and I quote "A stub of charred meat in a cape." Making both philosophies: blind in arrogance, and apathetic and narrow in their own philosophy: *as neither even once considered: their philosophies could be wrong.* And as older fans know, "Apathy, is death." A lesson, even as he died, Mormin: couldn't comprehend and his "lover" (the Dark Side) abandoned him accordingly. To oblivion.

The same should have been made down the path, but Tenebrous broke this line. Plagues was the same. Thought it was major difference between Jedi and Sith, that Jedies served the Force and and Siths used the Force for their own ambitions. Siths have always seem for me kinda "Nietzschean" Will to Power types of people, who value individualism and self-determination over everything else. Siths despise "Slave Morality" of the Jedies, who serve the Force like.. well.. slaves, whereas Siths should follow their own ambitions and think with "Master Morality". I pretty much see Momin being Sith from less advanced times and much weaker than Siths after accumulated wisdom of Rule of Two. Momin is just a slave to Force like Jedies, whereas Sith like Sidious is his own master.

"What a waste of time in the eyes of Momin." 7:39 I don't know if it's the context or the delivery, but that line consistently makes me laugh for some reason. I don't know what it is, but it's as hilarious as it is true.

The Rule of Two was always more like a guideline than actual rules. There are many examples of both the Master and Apprentice in different eras keeping a secret apprentice that the other didn't know about. In fact, I'm pretty sure that was the case more often than it wasn't.

The Rule of Two never really was, anyway. Each of the "two" Sith usually had Force wielding minions. Palpatine had the Inquisitors and his Emperor's Hands. They were of Jedi strength. So while they weren't technically Sith....they served the Sith, they were tools of the Sith. The 2 Sith lords couldn't do it all by themselves, and regular humans couldn't or they'd have just gotten some clones to do these tasks. So you might want to call it the Rule of Two because there were two clear top dogs, but there were plenty of very powerful "assistants" required as well. And when there was a Sith Empire, there was always a ruler, and then lots of other masters and apprentices. There were less of these with the Rule of Two, but it was never "just" Two.

I'm wondering what era Momin and Shaa were from? After the Dark Council, but before the Brotherhood of Darkness (between 3,600-1,000 bby)? Before the Great Hyperspace War (5000 bby)? Where do they fit in the timeline?

He's a Dark side version of a grey Jedi, got it ;) Dedicating himself to the service of the force, not merely the eradication of his enemies and obtaining and/or protecting political power. From what you told us here, it could be gathered that if the Jedi and Sith just let go of their mutual hatred it could be possible for both of the orders to flourish and coexist with eachother as well as other groups.

@@victorygame7296 Afraid it does, canonically Anakin is no longer the chosen one. That went to Ray. The Momin comic is Disney Canon too, so if you're going to claim chosen one to counter it, you have to acknowledge the Disney trilogy.
