Unlike the themes presented by Mami and Kazuya in Rent-A-Girlfriend, OreGairu presents the opposite effects of love. Just like love can intoxicate you, it can also sober you. I related to how love and friendship sobered Hachiman to his crippling cynicism.

I seriously needed these two videos in my life. I’ve watched and read through both rent a girlfriend and Oregairu recently just for fun, but oregairu struck me as special and I couldn’t find the reason why. Over the past year I’ve experienced something similar to the story you told in video 1 and have been “sobered” like you said. I’ve been looking for a way to explain it for 3 months now. These essays brought me to tears. I know I can’t quite show the same gratitude through a KZfaq comments thread, but thank you so, so much for this. You’re a blessing.

i can relate to hikigaya and you too , im so cynical thru my past experience with people and society that recently i made others distance themselves from with the horrible but effective methods to their problems letting them brand me as the bad guy , a hypocrite and someone who thinks to highly of himself(though it wasn't the first time) but i cant help it by toggling between wanting to keep myself in a shell to protect , lie to myself that im better off by myself and reaching out to others.

I struggled with the same issue. It was really hard for me to find that balance between keeping the security of interpersonal distance and the desire to have people to rely on. I'd say the only reason I'm close with people is by specific circumstances or because they themselves made way into my life. That being said, I'm not close with a lot of people and, even the people I am close with I tend to be reserved towards. They respect the distance I place there until I decide to close it. I still try to keep to myself with a lot of my problems, but connections with others have shown me that it's not just about having someone I can rely on, but also being the person others can rely on. I wouldn't say wanting to be mostly independent of others is a bad thing, but being completely independent might. I hope you can overcome the struggle, and I wish you the best of luck.

bro, you made me cry a bit on this video and I don't know why. Thank you very much for sharing your profound thoughts and experiences in life. They really help me in what I'm going through right now. We're on the same train, man. The more I think about things, the more depressed I become from finally realizing what's happening in our lives and my desire to find the answers grows stronger. I hope that we eventually arrive at our destination in this seemingly never-ending journey someday.

Perfect video I needed right now, feels like whenever I try to reach out I get slapped away, I keep trying because I want connection, not even a bloody romantic connection, it makes me HATE others, so much, but I know deep down, it is not all their fault, my mind is messed up, too much has happened, that I can not act like normal person, 100% others have suffered worse, but I have still suffered. So strong is the desire to abandon everything and everyone, but I must be strong, for my strength is my value and so to be strong, I must continue to suffer, as it is the only way I can seemingly prove my strength, god it would be great to be weak.

I always find myself coming back to this video. I'm currently in highschool and ive been reading my perspective on this topic for a long time honestly. As self deprecating cynicism is it came in handy at times yet sorta tores you apart in the inside. When you get hurt your sorta left with this resentment towards the person that's caused it to you retaining this self loathing ora you have within you. Whether you see this comment or not I hope it reaches you, thank you for covering this topic it somewhat changed my views on life honestly. Also I would honestly love to read some of your old cynical essays. I love the way they were written that relate so much to oregairu

But what do you do when its your inability to find love that causes pesimism and depression? I am a hopeless romantic and have always believed in it, Ive infact found a girl I truly love but alas I can not be with her for reasons I wont elaborate on. I dont find my past actions cringeworthy at all, merely those of a teenager who lacks wisdom as those with little expierience do. You having essays of your past self has gotten me to realize one thing tho, I find it rather difficult writing a diary I currently find boring so that future self could understand current self, but writing an essay once in a while might be more interesting to current self also. As a man in his 20s recently sharing his middleshool works (grade 11 I think) with the girl he loves, I myself found it interesting reading an essay I had written for english class. Could proove useful for making videos in the future too, for tho a diary is a more personal thing essays are more general things I could more redily quote. From your words it sounds like, tho we had very different upbringings, we have ended up much the same - people who cant really tell if their heart is soft with a stone shell or the other way arround, inteligent people who believe in bough love and beauty and are able to look at everything trough a cold hard lense of rationality.

@@UnbelievableCider just an irrational & stupid thought came to my mind.. that is, what if Hikigaya didn't go to Sobu High to begin with by any chance & didn't meet ppl like Hiratsuka sensei! Would he then still continue to be the same as s1 starting hachiman? I guess yes.. meeting right ppl at right time is purely coincidence & has a probability of around 1% or less! BCOZ it was a fictional written story, all the pieces (i mean every single character) were there to get story reach its good conclusion! The core concept of the story is untouchable by any other imo (that's y it's my fav of its genre).. but the thing is, everything is uncertain if I stupidly compare it with real life!

@@chiheisensei1646 @chiheisensei I'm not too sure what would happen, but you're probably right. I still think it's possible he could've met someone similar at a later point in his life, or his sister could've been the one to give him that little shove forward. I feel like there are enough people in the world who might take notice of his skewed perspective on life at some point and decide to take action like Hiratsuka did. At the end of the day, we can't really know I guess. It's definitely interesting to think about, though.

@@UnbelievableCider thnx for the reply! rn my life is stuck at s1 hachiman (except the fact that there's noone like Hiratsuka Sensei, yukino or yui).. I'm not that much cynical but I do wanna change the ppl around me in a good way (which can't happen ik).. noone here actually watches anime & even if some ppl watches that's only the mainstream shounen stuff.. & also superficiality is at its peak here.. everyone is everyone's frnd but noone is anyone's true frnd, i can realise just by observing.. I'm now at last year of my high school & I'm just aiming to go to a good college! hope I'll find some ppl or someone like u there just to talk. if someone can hold a fresh conversation with me that's more than enough I want.. . btw subbed ofc.. seems like u r taking a break & that's fine.. i also started streaming on twitch a while ago to meet more ppl with similar interests but I'm on a break now as well for exams.. ik I'm talking a lot here & sorry if it bothers u.. Why everybody that makes videos about either Hachiman or any other "loner" characters saying "I was like that" but then they start talking about who they did had friends, people were friendly towards them, even had a couple of GFs, etc? That's not what been a loner or having a shitty life is, like at all, not even close.
@UnbelievableCider
@UnbelievableCider Жыл бұрын
First of all, there is absolutely nothing wrong with making a connection with a character and relating to them. There aren't certain people who "deserve" to while others don't. Second of all, who is to say that someone with friends and who has experienced love can't experience loneliness? It isn't defined by one thing, there are many different kinds of loneliness. I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on this subject, but I know for sure that what you are saying is just not fair to others. You can't say "you don't know what it's like to really be lonely" simply because someone hasn't experienced the same type of loneliness or to the same extent that you have. I understand, it might be frustrating. It's frustrating when others characterize these things differently when they haven't gone through the same level of pain that you have, and, for what it's worth, if you have or are experiencing such extensive loneliness, I'm sorry. However, just like you are your own person with your own pain, others are too. You shouldn't discredit people's feelings because they don't match yours.
