You guys are all correct. Unfortunately I cannot cover EVERY possible scenario and discuss every loop hole in these videos. I try to give the best general advice I can. Yes, most olympic weightlifters are built for ATG squats. Yes, performing paused ATG squats will transfer over to powerlifting squats. Yes, someone can (and should) incorporate both styles into their routine

HorizonRover Do you deadlift with mixed grip?
@wonderfuldestruction93849 жыл бұрын
HorizonRover I had the same problem. There is a con when going heavy, the form is not as great as the lighter weight, this literally causes some imbalances in your body if you don't pay attention to them. You probably need to drop the weight a little and start to incorporate mobility stretches in your routine. Sometimes is better to step back and consider that your body needs attention in order for you to progress. About the hand grip, i've seen some powerlifters using the mixed grip and ending up with a twisted hip, imbalances in bones and muscles. Symmetrical is best choice in heavy calls. It happens in Squats, i've seen two cases, some muscles will fire more than others without you taking notice. I'm absolutely ok and in check, still going heavy.

HorizonRover Are you able to record a video of your form? If you are, post it on reddit fitness and seek advice there. KZfaq comments arent the ideal forum. Otherwise it'll be difficult to offer help if nobody can see what your form is like. As always, any serious injury or reoccurring pain should be brought up with a doctor.

All correct, Mr. Thrall..but then you're a young man. There's a downside to ATGs that doesn't show up until you're in your fifties: torn meniscus cartilage. I'd done ATG's since my teens with no problem, and ATGs are definitely superior in terms of overall athleticism, as you point out. However, I had to have meniscus surgery on both knees at age 60. My surgeon told that after I healed, I could squat again but to never go deeper than a 90 degree angle. He showed my how this works, with a model of the knee joint. Sure enough, it's true, as a model clearly shows. When you go super low, it grinds the meniscus like crazy. But to me, a creature of habit, stopping at 90 degrees was like not squatting at all. So a few months ago, at age 64, I fell off the wagon and started doing ATGs again. After a few weeks of this, I had fresh meniscus tears. So it's a trade-off. For maximum athleticism during that fleeting phase called "youth," ATGs are decidedly the way to go. But you pay a price later.
@JamesSmith-cm7sg7 жыл бұрын
you spent a lifetime enjoying squats and it took until 60 years old, when you shouldn't be squating heavy, to get serious injury. Congrats sir, no matter which sport or exercise there will be injuries, you did well... now stop lifting heavy... its over now!
@Celtokee7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your congrats. Of course you're correct; the big weights are long over. I'm 65 now (my knee surgeries were five years ago), but today I still do squats with light weights, and deep knee bends with no weights at all, but even with those I no longer go butt-to-ground. I also sprint up flights of stairs also, two steps at a time.
@theneonpython7 жыл бұрын
torn meniscus really sucks, im only 22 and have a worn one in my left knee probably from wrestling back in high school. i still do heavy squats but use very tight compression bads, excellent form, and lots of warming up first. havent had any pain since doing this, probably helps my joints in fact
@Celtokee7 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. Could've been wrestling. I've read that meniscus tears are the #1 injury of US troops in Afghanistan; those are young men. Myself, in addition to ATG squats, something else that trashed my meniscus (both sides) was stretching in the lotus (yoga) position, legs crossed in a knot. While stretching in general is crucial, that stupid lotus position is no earthly good for anything. My orthopedic surgeon who repaired my meniscuses (menisci?) said never even cross you legs, and never do deep knee bends deeper than a 90 degree angle of the knee. He was right; now if I even cross my legs (the normal way guys do it) even for just a few minutes, my meniscus starts hurting. But I've found that I can do deep knee bends lower than 90 degrees (say, about 60 degrees) without causing my knees to start hurting again. That's with butt about 10-12 inches off the ground. But if I try to go lower, like 4 inches off the ground, sure enough, I start to get the pain again. The doc showed me a plastic and rubber model in his office of the knee and how this works, dynamically: When you go down only 90 degrees, there's no pressure/grating on the meniscus; but when you go way low, your legs are like a nutcracker and your meniscus is the nut. For a young man, it's not that serious because you've got more cartilage. But we lose a certain % of our cartilage every year. So at 65, I can now really feel it immediately when I go too deep. Hope your tear gets better. But for purposes of bulking up your quads, my personal opinion is that 60 degrees gives you plenty of dynamic range for that.
@markb.7397 жыл бұрын
Great point, you don't see many ATG squatters chugging along after their 50's. That "bounce" he is using to get out of the hole is the reason Mr Thrall will be having his first knee surgery at about 50.

RIGHT ON. Overly enthusiastic people complain that they will hurt their knee tendons etc. going ATG. But they use too much poundage. Tendons and ligaments take months and years to strengthen compared to muscle tissue which overcompensates and heals in days or weeks. Everyone rushes the process, thus injuring their joints. Nature dictates ATG using less weight. Remember that conservation is basic law. The body is ALWAYS the boss. Paralysis by analysis is unfortunately what ruins most people. Leave all the studies behind- they are only training wheels.

But sometimes i needed to do box squats since some of the positions in throwing require a bit of bend on the knee, not full depth.

Robert Butacu There is literally no pro for quarter squats unless you count ego lifting as a pro. Jackasses who load up 4 plate and do little knee bendies probably think they're hot shit. I've seen DYEL fucks at the gym get in a rack next to me and load up more weight and do a 3rd of my depth. I wonder if they're thinking they're stronger than me when this is happening. I'd also love to see those people do a full squat with even 1 plate.

ParabolaTool For some reason? Hm, you know who tool is, right? About the quarter squat... I don't know what to say... I can squat 225lbs to depth, while this guy at my gym quarter squats 315, but his legs are so much bigger than mine ( he's also taller, fatter, and probably with a lot more experience than me - ive been lifting for 1 year, with 6 months of kinda of a lower back injury :)) )... So yeah, it depends on your goals... Lately, ive been focusing more on just doing things the right way , increasing my core strength and not giving a fuck about how i look or how much i lift.

Personally i think, even as a powerlifter you should squat as low as you can in your training sessions, even though you don't need to go ass to grass in a powerlifting meet
@05khanha9 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure most power lifters do go as low as they can. Its hard to go low with powerlifting stance. Its a real awkward position.
@gainsandglory68089 жыл бұрын
Leo S Not really possible to atg squat with a low bar position and legs really wide. And imo that is bad advice. You should train to squat the same way as you squat in a meet. Why would you spend months squatting a certain way and then change it the day of the meet? That will probably just throw you off.
@s00xmyc00x1239 жыл бұрын
As a powerlifter you can use high bar "atg" squats as a strenght builder but the main focus should be on your competition stance squat.
@douglashutchinson27479 жыл бұрын
I do a powerlifting squat, but in training I try to go slightly past the range of motion that would be acceptable in the meet. It doesn't throw me off at all, but just assures me that when I get on the platform or go for a PR, I have more confidence in hitting my depth. I do the same with bench press by doing a 2 count on my pause. That way if I get a judge with a long "press" call, it won't throw me off. And if I get a short one I will have a good day.

One thing that bothered me with the commentary - though the whole thing seemed pretty spot on - the ATG bounce is not something I believe most athletes should strive for. In my nonexpert opinion, if you are lifting to gain athleticism and strength through the full range of motion, that "bounce" should be slowed so that you aren't taking advantage of momentum (however the bounce is almost certainly beneficial to to competitive lifters of any kind) .

ive only ever squatted atg and ive had no problems. even form that is only half decent will keep you from hurting yourself. if you have trouble going atg at whatever weight you squat at, lessen the weight and practice your form

A lot of people like myself can't do ATG squats because our heels come off the ground. Ankle flexibility isn't the same with everyone, and it can only be improved so much.

Learn the asian squat hahahaha do it every day and ur legs will get used to it. I find it funny that so many westerners arent able to squat down and keep their balance. It is so natural for me to do it with ease
@landowar21628 жыл бұрын
Do you mean tilting backwards? Unbalance due to ATG squatting is a sign of weak stabilizing muscles in your quads.
@shinjid37058 жыл бұрын
Landowar And a sign that people has never been bothered to squat down like in asia
@MrSilus20008 жыл бұрын
+Landowar No, I mean the heels coming up naturally once you are at the ATG position. An easier way to understand this is with motorcycle rear brakes. The way they are designed on sport bikes, a lot of people like myself have to lift their foot completely off the peg to press down on the brake lever, whereas other people can rotate the foot up from the heel without ever losing contact with the peg.

put small weights under your heels when you squat. I learnt squatting correctly using that technique. I even saw a famous bodybuilder do but don't remember who

undefinido If you're squatting with flat feet, then a high bar position would allow you to stay more upright, which equals less buttwink.

Because of my poor knees, I'm limited to barely being able to do powerlifter style squats. I can barely go past 90° without extreme, sharp pain. I attribute that to injuring my meniscus 10 years ago in high school....

The bottom line is that everyone cannot squat to the same depth and shouldn’t be expected to. It is individual and will vary depending on the person.

Vreeland Homestead 90 year old Korean grandmas can squat ATG and do all the time. If you can’t it’s because you’ve lost normal ROM. You can train it back-but not while lifting heavy. ROM must be trained separately.

Mate great video! For ages I have been ATG squatting and only moving up slight weight. Now I know why people can lift more with the other powerlift squat. Now I need not worry about the weight as long as its challenging and I will continue to lose fat / gain muscle using this technique. I also like the fact that ATG squats help towards my sports as well! Greetings from Scotland!

Another tip for those who are trying to decide between ATG and Powerlifting: take into account your genetics. If you are someone like me who has really long shins and really long legs in general, it can be nearly impossible to ATG squat without going up on your toes. If you are like me I would suggest trying to find a happy medium between both styles.

Buy squat shoes. Or make dorsiflexion changes. You have poor dorsiflexion not long legs

Fantastic video mate. Love seeing people who are realistic about lifting techniques. I'm still a beginner myself, and squats are the lift that does my head in the most. It's pretty scary when you first start squatting 100kg and you're still not sure your technique is perfect. Thanks for the clear explanations and tips.

Thanks so much for your explanation! I do ATG and thought maybe I was doing them wrong but it works well for me. Seeing both the pros and cons of each helped me realize that either are good depending on what you are trying to achieve and I don’t feel so weak for not being able to squat 400 lbs right now!
