NBC paid $2.7 BILLION for Premier League rights and and a new MLS TV contract is around the corner. Is Soccer's popularity finally hitting the point where it will overtake America's more favored sports?

Lol it’ll never become a passion here. No offense to my fellow Americans, there’s not even true passion for even our sports. Idiots be switching “favorite teams” all the time! Football, like in Europe, Africa, and South America, isn’t life, not even for our sports. It’s mainly for entertainment. Of course you can find some very passionate fans, but nothing compares to the three regions I mentioned, NOTHING!

#1 reason: Baseball is like watching paint dry. Game takes 3+ hours for all 9 innings and you get about 15 minutes of actual gameplay. Big waste of time. Soccer also has a much wider appeal. Soccer is probably played in every country in the world due to its ease of access/low barrier of entry. Baseball is very limited--US, Canada, Japan, and a few others. Soccer is growing in the US and I'm glad to be watching/participating in that growth!

I started watching the sport in 2009, I remember watching Premier League games on ESPN 2 (and FSC), the match where Arsenal destroyed Everton at Goodison Park was the first match I ever watched on ESPN 2. During the 2010-2011 season they showed a decent amount of Monday night (in England) matches on ESPN 2 and I always made it a point to watch those games. Given what they could do with their limited licensing rights, ESPN, not in terms of how the sport was covered on shows like Sportsnation, PTI, Around The Horn...etc. Shows where soccer was not often spoke of well, did a solid job in broadcasting the EPL during that time (and to an extent, the sport in general). I think it’s understated how much ESPN helped grow the EPL and in general soccer in the U.S. for the 4 year span they had the limited rights to the EPL.

It might be because of where I live (south Louisiana), but soccer is still far behind the other sports, including baseball/softball. BUT, the prospects even here are are very bright. I teach high school French, so I get to talk about French/European culture, including The Beautiful Game. When I show highlights of the top matches, even students who have never kicked a ball are interested. And, in our small rural town, we didn't have enough coaches to handle the number of U-10s who signed up for the brand new league.

Jake... this video was great but you ignored the number 1 league watched in the US.... Liga MX.... How much would that have added to the valuations you mentioned... I'm not a MX fan but if it's soccer in general we're talking about you have to mention this league. You mentioned respect a lot in your video as a reason for growth right... One other thought I have on this is that the fact that ESPN and other major media outlets never picked up the sport locally and internationally in my opinion, has lead to the growth of great channels like yours, 11Yanks, Tactical, etc. Now there's an abundance of really good and diverse content. Much better than anything SportsCenter would do. I think y'all are part of the growth here in the US! All the best and keep putting out your great content.

Football (soccer) should’ve leapfrogged the NHL from Day one. Simply due to the accessibility to play it anywhere at any climate & all you need is the ball and some make shift goals using a couple of coats, whilst Hockey is filled with pads and ice. Through that you would’ve thought generations sooner would’ve taken to it, even on a domestic, but now with the idea on board and the online services, the game is exposed to American families that haven’t I guess.

If MLS is ever going to be taken seriously, 1. Get rid of the stupid "Euro" names of the teams. 2. Stop listing the home team first. 3. Stop putting ties before losses. 4. Play some music during stoppage of play (like the others). 5. Have a goal horn whenever the home team scores (ala hockey). 6. Don't fold a team just to give them a replacement a couple of years later (Tampa Bay and Miami 1.0's foldings were necessary evils though). 7. Never sign players to a ludicrous contract that gives them the right to own a team ever again. 8. And most important of all, do not name teams after your sponsors! I feel so sorry for Sacramento, for this league to continue to screw them like this! At this point, I'm all for them pulling a "Robert Irsay" on Miami, Chivas 2.0, Utah, Houston etc.! I also hope the owners of the Cosmos gets their heads out of their rears and save the former MetroStars from their sponsors by converting them into the new Cosmos. Is it any surprise for why "Steinbrenner" soccer has surpassed the "MetroStars" at this point (ala the Yankees surpassing the Giants and Dodgers 100 years ago)? Until then, enjoy these curses MLS! # SacramentoCurse # BeckhamCurse # RedBullsCurse ... It doesn't matter how big the country is and how much money is given for soccer. In the USA and Russia, soccer players have no instinct to play soccer. That's why successes can only be temporary. The greatest team of the USSR was made up of Ukrainians, Georgians and Armenians. Soccer in USA is not a popular sport, because it is not practiced daily, only organized.. It doesn't matter how much money is given. The system is wrong. So there will be only temporary, random success. Another problem with the US is the MLS. Think of it this way. Imagine that apart from the NFL, there were other leagues that competed at the same level as the NFL. Let’s say Canada had its own version of the NFL (Which they do) however it just doesn’t compete at the same level as the NFL. But In this imaginary world, let’s say that Canada’s football league competed at the same level as the NFL, and let’s say that Mexico had its own football league that also competed at the same level as the NFL. Likewise those three leagues would have their own season and their own champions. So the U.S has the Super Bowl and that’s the NFL’s champion, and the Canadian and Mexican league’s have their own league championship bowl winner as well. But, apart from each leagues independent regular season. Imagine if the three leagues also competed in a separate championship league where US, Canadian and Mexican teams would battle it out for a separate championship that would determine a winner of the three leagues. So maybe one year you’ll have a Mexican vs Canadian championship game and the next year you’ll have an American vs Canadian team championship game. Do you kinda get the idea??? Let me know That’s kinda how soccer in Europe works. Each country has their own league, the British have the “Premier League” the Spanish have “LaLiga” and Germans have “Bundesliga” however all those teams are also part of a separate league called “Champions League” which encompasses most of Europe where teams eliminate each other until two are left and it could be a team from Germany and team from Spain, or a team England and a team from Italy. So in a nutshell, teams are playing two leagues simultaneously. Hopefully it wasn’t too long, let me know if you get the concept??

The premier imo is overrated and dull, wow Liverpool and City up top again. MLS is always competitive

MLS is one of the most competitive leagues in the world. Different league and cup winners each year.

@@ItsCalledSoccer I don't think that makes the league "competitive" no MLS club is better than the rest so no team outshines any other. Even with the massive disparity in Premier League budgets, all of them have a feasible chance of winning. That makes it "more competitive" then the league having numerous winnrrs

@@edgarmorenocastillo8601 that's why they expand to Europe. That's why they had an anschlag in UK, Germany and Mexico. That's why revenue is getting high as well of TV and KZfaq ratings of games and back and forth rise of SuperBowl. That's why Germany created ELF and promote football in EU. The most popular sport in Germany for young generation is football despite national sport as soccer

In 15 years the most popular leagues in America will be the NBA, NFL, Super League (or whatever it gets called), MLB, Liga MX, NHL and MLS. In that order.

Ehhhh it's hard to see NHL being more popular than MLS but I guess if they don't capture the growth then it would happen.
