How Many Different Unlock Patterns Could You Create?

The Android pattern lock screen consists of 9 contact points arranged in a 3 x 3 matrix. Acceptable patterns are conditioned by three main rules:
1. A minimum of four contact points must be connected, and the maximum number is obviously 9.
2. A contact point can only be used once!
3. An intermediate point between two connected points, must be included in the pattern order, unless it was previously used!
So how many different combinations are possible on the pattern lock screen? Under the conditions created by these rules you can create a total of 389,112 different patterns!

Us, as viewers, usually always want the answer immediately without all of the anticipation and video extending bs, and when we get it so suddenly in this video, we feel guilty about it. This isn’t reverse psychology, an example or reverse psychology would be saying something like “okay fine, don’t go to sleep. When your sister and I go to the water park early tomorrow morning, we won’t wake you up.” Here’s another: “Don’t you dare eat your vegetables or else I will be mad.” *Turns around, comes back to find al vegetables eaten and the kid has a smug look on his/her face*

+Jasmine Ju It is a good approximation. First we also have to look at all factorials leading up to 9 because we can do it with only 4 or more contacts. So: 4! + 5! + 6! + 7! + 8! + 9! would be the answer could we connect from any dot to any other dot. But due to the other constraints placed on the pattern the answer is more complex and infact (probably) not solvable by analytical means but only by an algorithm. Or just letting a computer try every combination and let it check if it fits the restrictions.

Most custom ROMs enable u to pick not only 3x3 patterns but also 4x4, 5x5 and 6x6. Also they allow u to not only make the pattern invisible but the dots too.

Neko Central The math is simple. You'd need to sum all the combinations for a given line length. 4x4 has 16 points, 5x5 has 25. If the line length minimum is also 4 points, then you'd have to find sum combinations 4 out of 16 (4/16), 5/16, 6/16.... 16/16 To get x/16 combinations the formula is (16*15*14*...16-n+1)/(1*2*3....*n) So, 4 out of 16 is (16*15*14*13)/(1*2*3*4) That is: 4 (16/4) * 5 (15/3) * 7 (14/2) * 13 (13/1) = 1820 Then you move to 5/16 (16*15*14*13*12)/(1*2*3*4*5) Now you can notice we have almost the same numbers, with addition of 12/5 So, 5 out of 16 would be 1820 * 12/5 4368 6/16 is 4368*11/6 8008 7/16 is 8008*10/7 11440 etc. Then you sum all the combinations and get the answer..... (as you could see in the video, it was componental).

Neko Central Oh man, I screwed up :( That's not the right math.... Scrap it. That formula is for lottery combinations, but there it doesn't matter the order of numbers (1,2,3 is the same as 2,3,1 or 3,1,2 - it all counts as one). Back to the drawing board!!!!

Neko Central OK, I think we should just ditch the division, in lottery calculation it's used to get rid of duplicates. So... 4/16 is 16*15*14*13 5/16 is 16*15*14*13*12 6/16 is 16*15*14*13*12*11 etc. Then sum them up. p.s. I believe minimum number of dots in 4x4 would be 5 (so you can't have one straight line)
