It was a great and frankly under-appreciated idea to use sparklers for the fire arrows. Other, quite prominent KZfaqrs have made various videos about the impracticality of fire arrows. The arrows tend to snuff themselves out unless a really weak bow is used, due to the massive wind resistance. But sparklers are made with some chemical goodness that keeps the reaction going even in a strong air current. I've never seen this approach to fire arrows before, but evidently it works wonderfully despite its simplicity. Well done to solve this old problem basically on the fly. I've seen lengthy videos by experts trying to come up with a way to overcome the fire arrow problem, and here it's worked out in a quick sentence.

Most KZfaqr's that are considering the option usually do so in consideration of history and practicality. On history...it's clear. Medieval times didn't have them, at least not in the form we know them as. As for practicality, sparklers will light a highly flammable gas easily, but they are less likely to ignite a wooden beam, for example. So yeah. They found a solution to the problem they had, but they didn't solve a problem with fire arrows itself.
@capatheist
@capatheist 5 ай бұрын
So does a ball of rag soaked in pitch and flammable oils behind the arrow head go out? They were definitely used in medieval times on through… I’ll accept that they didn’t probably look like it does in say the movie gladiator. But burning projectiles were definitely used in warfare 1000 years or more ago…
@FireStormOOO_
@FireStormOOO_ 5 ай бұрын
That discussion you're referring to is largely if this is practical *without modern pyrotechnics*, or for that matter even black powder. Obviously there's record of incendiary weapons as far back as you care to look, but it's an open question just how situational they are, just how much they gimp range, and just how specialized the projectiles have to be. That said, props to these guys. This is a really elegant fix if you're not so constrained and that shot was epic.

You should fill some balloons with an exact 2:1 mix of hydrogen and oxygen in each balloon. And then do the sparkler arrow. You'll love it, I promise. Just...make sure to have some extra sturdy blast protection, and hearing protection. And...actually...do it outside, somewhere far from any habitation.

They should do the flaming balloon thing again, only they should fill each balloon with different metal dusts. That way the flames might be different colors when they burn each material.

That is because the propane gas only had a small amount of oxygen mixed in and when it came back into the area of mostly oxygen the fire could "breathe" again. Propane is flammable, but propane fire also needs oxygen to flourish
@Andrew-13579

Fill a 200 gallon, airtight sealed aquarium with 100% propane. Also have mounted inside a sparkler that can be ignited electrically by remote. What will happen? The sparkler material has its own oxidizer, right? It should burn. Also curious what a sparkler would do in orbit…zero g and vacuum.
@resurgam_b7
@resurgam_b7 Жыл бұрын
@@Andrew-13579 It would depend on the composition of the sparkler, I don't know if they have their own oxidizer or not. If they do, then it would ignite, and burn like normal, though probably less energetically since there would be no additional oxygen available to it from the air (like in the video where they stopped sparking while in the cloud of propane). If they do not, then it would not ignite at all, though it might degrade in the heat from the electric arc. In zero G with atmosphere it probably wouldn't look much different to here on earth since there's not much actual flame, thought the smoke wouldn't rise away from it so that would be different. Without atmosphere, it would again depend on the sparkling composition, if there was oxidizer included, it would happily burn, if not, then, as before, it wouldn't. An easy way to test if they have their own oxidizer mixed in would be to light one then plunge it into water, if it continues to burn, then it has oxidizer, if it fizzles out, then there is none, or at least not enough to sustain the combustion.

This video convinced me to buy myself a DJI Avata. No, this comment is not sponsored. xD I've had heaps of fun with that thing though! The joycon is absolutely beginner-friendly, as in every person who has never touched a drone in their life can easily fly with it. But I also got the DJI pro controller with it so I have two joysticks to fly with, and also fly manual. Manual is scary at first but it is relatively easy if you are used to flying other remote controller aircraft (helicopters, etc). There is a simulator app that works on both your phone and PC where you can fly a drone in a simulation game with your real controllers so you can have plenty of practice without risking to crash your real drone. And heck, even if you do end up crashing it, it's very durable and can handle a kick. And due to it's tiny size, and guarded props, it's the perfect little drone to fly indoors through your own home or through bigger buildings.

I don't know if you guys know this already but the reason there was such a long delay igniting the gas in the balloon is because propane can't burn The gas itself is not capable of burning until you mix it with oxygen so it took time for the gas and the balloon escaping to mix with the oxygen in the room once it hits the correct ratio then it ignites So if you wanted to light faster you fill the balloon halfway with propane and halfway with oxygen or just blow up the balloon with your mouth halfway and then blow up the rest of the way with propane That will cause it to ignite almost immediately and probably with a bit more bang however I think the slow ignition looks freaking cool in the slowy The dude at the end explained it 20 to 1 ratio so you guys already know it but still I like the slow one better it looks incredible on the high speed video
