How many races are there? What does the term "race" even mean? Throughout most of human history in the past several thousand years as disparate populations came into contact with one another, informal classification schemes of the human species have been developed for conveniently placing various people groups into boxes that were familiar with the general public.
Today we're going to be going through some of these historic "racial" classifications, the methodology behind it, and why there is such contention around this subject. Also, we'll be going through my own personal assessment of the human species and how I personally view this topic. Thanks for watching!

@Vasian Vasianich I'm not Christian, and neither are most anthropologists and geneticists who agree with me. Racial groups as we understand them are not scientific, they're culturally constructed. This would explain the recent finds of ancient isolated populations of humans living in Greece, long before we thought possible...

@KALUMO because humans are not a single race, that's like saying all dogs are one race, dogs. No, humans are a single species and we're all biologically very similar, being black or white will make no difference in most things (except on certain diseases and skin conditions, such as sunburns), however, saying we're all one race is just SJW talk. Humans have diversity between them, and this is something many like to ignore. A Swedish person is not the same as a Thai or a Mayan, and this is the beauty of the human specie. Saying we are all the same is wrong and it overlooks the differences between so many groups.

Time to reject that racist nonsense, but you're saying that in American culture "black" is not a race or a color but it's the history of your ancestors, Obama is not black because there is no "American slavery" history. That's a weird construct. I live in Europe, we have immigrants from sub Sahara Africa, like Ghana, Somalia and Angola, we have people from the Caribbeans and America's, so it's a different reality because of different cultures and history over here. Sounds creepy, this construct of `Black America`, made by white supremacists. `if your not pure white your not white` Wow, that´s really crazy...

@@vy689k6 Homo sapiens i a species not a race, lol. Don't play smart and talk about anthropology when you don't know much about this subject. Why this anger? There are no races within our species, we are a species obsessed with ancestry and heritage, as long as we have history, we have storied about where we came from, so we invented identities to connect ourselves to people from the past, just to entertain ourselves. But as our DNA shows, all myths about races, tribes and ancestry are nothing but social constructs, that´s what anthropology showed us. There´s a difference between cultural history and natural history. I can trace my family back to 1500, and even in this short period, my ancestors lived all over Europe. And Europe was inhabitable until 12.000 years ago, all this nonsense about races would make sense IF earth was only 6000 years old. But that is not true.

Asking how many races there are seems a bit like asking how many branches there are on a tree. The answer depends on how much fine tuning you want. The fact that there is no unique number doesn't mean that the concept of tree branches is meaningless, and similarly neither does that mean that the concept of races is meaningless. As an example, some like to say "there is only one race, the human race, since we have one ancestry" - this is technically true, though no one would celebrate someone saying "there is only one branch because they all combine into one stem". It's not a useful statement, indeed it's a rather disingenuous one, except for political purposes. As the introduction to the video suggests, the politicization of science is not a good thing. It seems somewhat strange to me that the video identifies these various branches of the human family tree and simultaneously seems somehow dismissive of the concept of race. Race does sometime matter. For example, the compatibility of donors and recipients in organ transplants correlates strongly with race. When people make blood donations the donor's race is noted down as this will often affect whether someone can receive the blood safely, etc. It's not the be-all end-all of course, and in these discussions it's necessary to point out its limitations while also knowing its utility. It's one tool of many in talking about human populations.
@albejaine
@albejaine 3 жыл бұрын
The point was not about whether it was meaningless. The reason behind the attempted grouping is understood but the categorization itself is faulty and therefore unreliable. In your analogy, you missed the glaring implications: both perspectives are wrong.

The history of the hominid expansion in Africa, what we know of it, calls into question the very definition of Species. For the past 50 years, an alternative approach has provided a fertile area of research. It's called Cladism, and it focuses more on Genera than Species. @@Yajna007 I've seen that video, and it's interesting, but academic Cladism has a deep bullpen of opponents it has to face, so it has to be very circumspect and careful in its claims. The general gist is that defining species by procreative success entails that species of the same genera usually have some hope of success, especially when closer in time and geography to the radiation point. This means that "species" can become a redactive and unnecessarily limiting element when attempting to explain the historical radiation within the genus. It obscures facts by preventing the researcher from recognizing that genetic inheritance flows in the population are following patterns they think can't exist.

Instead of discussing arbitrary classifications in which cultural identity and phenotype overlap, rather it's more interesting to look how culture and genes overlap and how both influence each other. The most up to date definition of what humans are and how culture and genes interact is best explained by dual inheritance theory. Basically culture is not random but subject to selection pressure and genes can be influenced by cultural selection. Lactose tolerance is an example and there might be many more.

It's impossible to answer without a clear definition of what race or ethnicity is.... You can define it away as a social construct or define it as a subspecies separated by some way of looking at genetics (even if the vast majority of dna is the same, the tiny differences between geographical adaptions give rise to strong phenotypic differences). Although this is strongly disputed that humans have any significant genetic diversity enough to define as a biological subspecies similar to how we'd speak of other animals.

Great video. Did you consider halplogroups? Since Homo Sapien history goes back hundreds of thousands of years, I’m almost sure there are times where the human population has dropped so significantly that we were close to extinction. My inclination would be to draw a line in the sand at that era and use your methodology to loosely define race. The crisis period chosen might allow for inclusion a few of the very small groups you mentioned as a distinct race that survived. How to choose that period would be a further exercise that could be derived from the fossil, geological, archaeological, or genetic record. For example, the most recent mass extinction of large mammals started around 13,000 years ago, and ended around 11,000 years ago. I could hypothesize that a significant number of humans were affected during that same timeframe, with some races surviving and others not so successful.

True I realy want to talk about this mass extinction event because it brought forth a very distinct unique trait in humans hunter gatheres living in central africa and Southern africa. Have you ever heard of the trait leathery skin found in indeginous groups from pygmy peoples to hottentots also sanbushmen. Leathery skin is adaptation to the hot climate that occured during 14000BC to 10000BC its a adaptation to heat causing skin cells to proliferate faster than what you would find in a other human beings causing this unique trait termed as learthery skin. The X and R haplogroups found among tribes the northern parts of North America are thought to have originated from the Altai region. The Sioux have upwards of 25% Caucasian genetics according to testing. Their are a few issues with that though. DNA testing needs pure test samples and it is assumed that these tribes are pure when they are not. Tribes don't work like that. we absorbed everything we came into contact with and tribes migrated a lot. A tribes genetics include every tribe they have mixed with as well as every tribe those tribes mixed with. both before and after arriving here. there were multiple migrations into the Americas from different places at different times to complicate matters further and not all genetics are included when mapping. Then there's also the issues with DNA testing itself which is unreliable for several reasons. first being the lack of knowledge in how DNA is transferred which is a variable and cannot be tested accurately. Being "half and half" doesn't mean you will have 50/50 split genetics and it doesn't mean you will test positive for all the genetics that your parents have either. The second being that genetics change over time with people as they migrate and mix. This is why DNA testing needs a lot of "pure" people as test samples. Even they won't have identical DNA but by comparing them you can get a slightly more accurate picture based on what is shared or "most common" among them. so basically the only thing a DNA test can do accurately is tell you which continent you're from (MAYBE) and if you contain admixture from another racial group. When it comes to natives in the Americas culture is probably one of the more accurate measures of heritage. Take southeastern tribes for example. We are genetically "Mesoamerican" and that is reflected in cultural and genetic ties shared between us and other tribes in central and South America. However their are some cultural ties that aren't reflected in genetic testing such as our connections to southern Asia. It is widely believed that we all crossed from Siberia but our folks used blowguns which spread from tribes in Malaysia. Blowguns never made it any further north than southern China. Somehow a relatively large migration of Southern Asians made it to the Americas by sea it and nobody wants to acknowledge that. There's also been Australoid and Austronesian genetics found here as well as a gene that originates from the first migration that is shared among all tribes here except those from the northern parts of North America. And to top it all off the oldest known DNA found in the Americas was found in Montana and is linked exclusively to southern Asia. Thus meaning that "first migration" gene originates from Southern Asians that arrived here in South America and began spreading north (as again that gene is entirely absent from tribes above the canadian border but present among their relations who moved further south and absorbed genetics from earlier arrivals). But again the DNA side of that argument can be disputed because DNA is constantly fluctuating. It's not as difficult to see the difference between racial groups but testing two groups of people within the same race is pretty hard when you factor in admixture and the fact that they share like 99.9% of their DNA to begin with lol.

It feels a bit like colour mixing, u have 3 main colours and colours u get from intermixing. So, translated in races, 4 "main" races, agreed, added with "strong intermixed" races, like turkoids (strong intermix between WEA and EEA), Indians (WEA and SEA), Arabs/Berber (WEA and African) and maybe a few others, since they differ a lot from the "main colours" used in the mix.

Arabs and Berbers are two different groups of people man lmao,also Arabs used to be known more as Arab tribes instead of the former since depending on the area some stayed "pure" while others intermixed with foreign groups. These are not very clean groups at all; however this should not be surprising, as geographic genetic diversities between groups of people tend to occur along continuums, rather than in discrete jumps. In other words, there is no inherent way to categorize people into intuitive groups

The only ambiguity seems to emerge upon phenomena of demographical mixing... Historically it seems fragmented groups of isolated demographics had some members occasionally break from the pack, went travelling and polluted another’s demographic. It’s incredibly dynamic considering some demographics are less mixed than others, thus are arguably more ‘racial’. I tend to just think of race as main racial lineages on a spectrum, consisting of sub-races/demographics. Some demographics are partially mixed of sub-races and others are fully mixed of main races.

@@untitled6391 There most definitely are ‘main racial lineages’ as you cannot ‘mix your way’ into creating brand new phenotypical features. Brand new phenotypes emerge from millennia of procreating with main and similar demographics in your lineage. I don’t see a ‘main race’ as singular, pure, line of lineage, I see it as a multitude of demographics that mainly and occasionally mainly mixed upon each other.

Something I found (drôle ) funny( in the sense of how absurd seems), but at the same time cringy how people from a certain race can distinguish others that have different facial features yet share almost the same skin tone color. For example some people can’t tell apart between mestizo Latinos and south Asian Indians. Although the first can do so, and I’m almost sure the lather can do the same as well. But I think it has to do more with our brains processing trys to hinder sensorial information than an active prejudice mindset. Case in point My skin tone is less obscure than the vast majority of my co-nationals,.one day while working I was taking the attendance list, when I mistook one person for another, who in my mind where almost identical, and I even dare ask him if they were related , even worst I thought that he wasn’t answering on purpose. On the next day I took a closer look and realized how different they are from each other, I felt bad and swear to never commit the same mistake again. I had to avoid using their names until I was a 100%sure who was who. Any way, my point is, if you’re not use to see people who are physically different to those who you’ve seen, chances are your going to have a hard time telling them apart. Therefore old human clasificación where based mostly on the knowledge of people who didn’t have as much contact to the grand variety of the human race and just asume that group a and b look the same, and therefore where identical. Just my thoughts base on my experience.

To avoid confusion with popular notions about "race", its best to refer to them as an "ethnic group". That said, i HEARTILY second the motion for Mr. Masaman to do his excellent research into these early european modern humans, whose rich culture has been largely lost because they do not appear to have written anything down, and they were absorbed by the post-glaciation wave of pre-Indo-europeans that flooded in (pun intended, lol) after the Younger Dryas, about 10,000 BC.

altareggo from what I remember about the cro-mango peoples is that that had distinct features that made different enough to be considered unique before Neolithic farmers from the Middle East and western Eurasian hunter gatherers migrated into Europe and mixed with them

@@RaffiJaharian you're not wrong but we dont know if western eurasian and neolithic farmers were cro magnon and we dont know how much admixture they brought in modern western eurasian (cro magnon descendants) and I believe there was a study that showed a cromagnon population had a identical genome to western Europeans

It's simple if your people don't have a genome there not a race, they are just a Y chromosome breed. I.E there are different breeds of dog because they have different Y chromosome but none are a unique race, they are all part of the wolf race, because they all have the wolf chromosome, only other canids like foxes and dingo's or the wild dogs of Africa have there own chromosomes and thus are there own race.

What I don't understand is: if race is not a biological category, why do we try to divide people groups according to DNA? Race and ethnic group is a cultural/social division. And another thing: if we humans are phenotipically even more divergent than most species, why don't we get subdivided into subspecies? Just like giraffes, which have several subspecies just because the spots have different shapes and they prefer to mate with the same spot-pattern. This may be controversial but don't humans tend to have relations with the same race/group? Excluding Latin America, I think this makes sense. And something else: what's the advantage of dividing us into races? For the purposes of census?

Just because ethnicity is a thing doesn't mean that race doesn't exist or that it isn't important. Race exists and ethnicity is socially constructed.
