00:00 Introduction
00:15 The answer is between 1 and 100, there is no simple number. It all depends on your environment, your budget, and other considerations that you have to make. So that's not very helpful and because of that, we put together four different profiles of different men with different needs and requirements, and we walk you through exactly what kind of suit you need, what style, what color, what fabric, so you always look the part and you have exactly the right suit for the right occasion.
02:03 For the man who normally never wears a suit. You're a student, maybe an IT professional, or just in a job where a suit is not required of you, ever. Maybe you work in every casual office, or you work from home, but a suit is just never something that has come up. In that case, I suggest you invest in one dark suit. I suggest you go with a single-breasted suit in a medium to lightweight that you can wear year-round.
04:50 Now let's talk about the second type of man. You are someone who rarely wears a suit, you maybe work at a very casual office but every once in awhile, when you have client contact or a business event, you'll need to get out some suits. In that case, it pays to have at least three suits otherwise, it would look like you only have one suit and you wear the same outfit over and over again which is never advantageous. So the three suits you should invest in are one, a dark navy suit and two, a dark charcoal suit. I suggest you get one of them in double-breasted because it's more formal and another one single-breasted with notch lapels because it's less formal. Ideally, you want maybe the navy suit to be double-breasted because you can wear it as a blazer separately. With those two suits, you're covered for summer and spring weather, as well as for fall and for a winter, they work very well, they're unpretentious, they're very professional, and you'll always be well respected and look at the part. For the gray flannel, you want something a little heavier about of 350 to 400 grams. For the worsted navy suit, you go something with a little lighter about 270 to 300 grams just like in the other suit before. The third suit to invest in for you is something that's a little more casual. It's not as formal and dark and brown tones are ideal for that. It could be a Glen check with an over plaid, it could be a small houndstooth or just something that's a little lighter in color that has a pattern.
06:35 The third type is men who wear a suit to work every day. Because of that, you need a larger rotation of suits because you can always get them stained and if you let your suits rest, they will actually last you longer. For most men in this category, it's enough to own 10 business suits because that's a two-week rotation. With ten suits, different shirts, ties, and shoes, you can create many outfits and it will never look like you're just repeating the same one over and over again. If you're starting out, you may not be able to afford 10 quality suits right from the bat and because of that, it pays to slowly build up that rotation, starting with the most versatile solid ones that we mentioned earlier.
11:38 The fourth type of man is the suit lover. At this point, we can't talk about need anymore and the sky is the limit. It's all about how many suits you want and the limiting factor is likely the amount of closet space you have.

I think it's great that you bring up different categories of men who (might) wear suits, and not just those who do so often or regularly. Over here in Sweden the vast majority of men, myself included, hardly ever wear a suit. Weddings and funerals, and that's pretty much it, unfortunately. Your advice is helpful!
@SFVnative

I can understand that. Having to get all dressed up every day for a job would get kind of old, especially in a place where it gets hot from late spring through early fall and can be 112-115° some days in August.

As a 25 year old man. I great appreciate this advice. And I just want people to know that your recommendations are SPOT ON. The very first suit I bought when I was 20 was a decent quality grey pin stripped suit. And although the suit looked SHARP. It was a terrible suit for me to buy at the time because it turned out to be extremely un versatile and I would have been MUCH better off investing my money at the time in a dark navy or charcoal stuit like he recommended.

Here’s another tip: If you need to suit up and don’t have a huge budget, combine their acquisition with your holiday and go to Thailand. Tailored suits are very reasonable here but of course do your homework first so you get a reliable tailor. They’ll also keep your data so you can order more (if you like their work).

I would say at least 1 for most people including myself. I would probably have maybe 2-4. I am also a mixture of archetypes 1 and 4. I love suits but unfortunately have not had the budget or opportunity for a decent quality suit until fairly recently. I am planning to get my first 1 or 2 suits very soon. As a teenager I had a separate black jacket that wasn't altered and later an oversized black pinstripe jacket that also wasn't altered but I don't wear either because I outgrew the old jacket and the new one is still too big and even altering wouldn't be enough. Surprisingly I still received compliments from people who either mistakenly called it a suit or thought I was dashing despite the ill fit or not being a true suit. In that case I would be a mixture of 2 and 4 since I would only wear a suit once a week for church, possibly a bit more depending on if I'm going to an interview or some other event or if I just feel like it. I do prefer double-breasted but owning single-breasted as well will maximize the versatility factor.

One, dark navy blue. Single breasted. You can use it for weddings, funerals, etc., paired with semi-brogues and a black tie, it'll get you through most situations. I, personally, have a black and a white shirt, cos the rules are a bit different here in Asia. But the Farang turning up at a funeral wearing traditional mourning dress earns a few kudos points. In these very extended asian mourning procedures I tend to go for the black shirt.

I have about 15. I lost almost 50 pounds and got rid of a lot of my suits, so I may get a couple more. I wore suits more before the pandemic - working in a hospital with sick patients and germs means I reserve my suits for the office and appropriate social affairs. My only issue with the suit is the idea that double-breasted is “more formal”. I don’t know that to be the case and I am broad enough that I always opt for single-breasted suit. That quibble aside, this is a great video.

Your shoes are amazing! Oh, and yes, that windowpane suit is stunning! It actually inspired me to get a navy windowpane jacket for myself. It, of course, has a chic feminine cut. But I do have a question, with patterned suits is it better to go with cuffed pants or not? I notice yours are cuffed but I kept wondering if I would prefer them without since it would elongate the leg. I already have a decent height as a lady (5' 10") and I was just curious. Also, when pants have a slim fit (not skinny), is it still acceptable to have cuffs?

Ideally I'd own 10 or more but right now I can't afford much more at once as I'm still relatively new into the workplace and I'd prefer to have 2 good suits with 2 pairs of trousers each as opposed to 5/6 cheap suits. Edit: didn't consider my dinner suit, so I guess that makes 4.

7 suits. Live in a hot climate. Only need to wear at weddings and funerals but wish I had more opportunity to wear them. Not at funerals obviously. I have most of the bases covered. I’m very lucky because almost always I only need to hem the pants. 44 long off the rack usually fits great and no need for further alterations. The tailor agrees. Lucky.

Great video. Maybe I missed it and I’m sorry if I did, but a person who wears suits daily needs more than 10 suits. You have to factor in the seasons. I have two types of suits - spring/summer and fall/winter

Another great video! Love that double breasted flannel! Man I need to get over to Fort Belvedere and get some accessories. Have you guys ever thought of coming out with your own sports coats and suits? It would be nice to be able to buy some of these classic designs! I find myself having to hunt these types of classic clothes down. It would be cool to just come to you guys as a one stop shop!

Im 23 and i wear suits 4 times a week. I currently own 5 suits and 1 that is still not ready for me to pick up. So a total of 6 suits. 1 is navy, 2 are charcoal but one is double breasted. I have a grey pinstripe, a tan, and a forest green or teal if you will. I love playing around with my suits with either ties, shirt patterns, and pocket squares! The suit i recently purchased but still have not received, is a navy pinstripe double breasted suit with peak lapels and im super excited for it. Especially since winter shouldn't be too long from now, i really want to get some turtle necks to wear with it

Excellent video. I have a question as a no.2. What type of suit should I wear if I wanted to swop out different waist coats and vests for a never tiring look? Thanks.

I have 3. A black three-piece, a silvery grey two-piece and a charcoal two-piece made from linen. All fairly light, single breasted. The next investion will probably be a navy blue one (I'm the third type, wearing a suit at least once a week).

Glad to see pinstripe double-breasted, those are my favorites. However, you left out Seersucker, with a Panama hat, for those of us stuck in the 1940’s Southern US. 🏚

People should keep in mind that clothing is Raphael's business so he can use creative accounting to reduce the cost of these clothing options. I would love to see his annual tab for the suits he has. Even though he makes it a point to discuss suit longevity and care in his videos I doubt that there are many years where he does not buy a suit even though he does not really need one or has many like-kind suits in that category. Cheers!
