In the many years I’ve been participating in triathlon, I have to say, that for me, swimming is one of the best ways to prevent injury in cycling and running.
@99cya
@99cya 2 ай бұрын
can you elaborate a bit on that? sounds interesting.
@PureNRG2
@PureNRG2 2 ай бұрын
@@99cya Swimming is a no impact activity that elevates your HR. Nothing to substantiate this, but I feel like swimming reduces inflammation by getting your heart rate up without all the stress on your legs that cycling and particularly running cause. All I can tell you is, for me, when I swim less, my running and cycling suffer and my injury rate almost always increases.

Good stuff. Could you do a show on some of the less utilized supplemental training for each discipline? Pull band for swimming, strength training for cycling and plyometrics, sprinting and drills for running.

I'm not swimming for a triathlon, just physical fitness and conditioning. I started a little over a year ago with 12 lengths, 300m, and now I'm at 30 lengths, 750m. A few months after I started I felt like I was getting fatter. Similar to how humans feel when they commence puberty. Now I am starting to see results such as muscle definition and more strength.

It's not only how often, but for how long you keep that training plan. Swim gains are slowest compared to running and cycling. 4x/week on a bike will pay off in few weeks. 4x/week in the swim will pay off in years.

I used to swim 3x a week. As an ex swimmer I put more energy and time into the bike and run training. Usually 3km max 4. But focused on intensity due to the overall low volume. Also helps that I'm a swim caoch so I made my own sessions.

Nice content -- one quick Q, does the duration you show (e.g. 30/45/60 min) include warmup? I usually do about a 10 min warmup per session

I agree in all what you said here in the video. I live in north of Sweden. I start my ow season in the middle of may but it’s pretty cold than 12-13+ C. October to mars I swim this season 3-4 workouts between 1500 m -4000 m, in the pool , unfortunately just once per week with coach. Last season I was swimming 5 times/week , was training for qualifying for Kona. I worked less last year to be able to rest more and train more. Swimming gives a lot to bicycle and running. My VO2 will be better after hard work in the pool. I bike and run better after hard intervals and series in the pool. Nice video as usual

Yes 😇I qualified in Kalmar and been to Kona October last year. I did my strongest IM in Kona, not fastest. I did my best swim in Kona same time as in Kalmar without wetsuit. The first IM I felt stronger the last 10 k in the running than in first 10 k. Bicycle is my strongest part but Kona has much tougher course than Kalmar. I took 18 positions in the bike in Kona. I’m very happy for that race. Kalmar is best but Kona was really one special race.

Because the lake I live by is frozen 9 months of the year I must travel 1.5 hours to the pool. Cost is a factor so I spend at least 1.5 hours in the pool. I focus on technique but also endurance and I do at least twice a week. In summer it is easy for me to jump in lake about 4 times a week for smaller duration. My biggest issue is anxiety with group swimmers so you can see the start of a triathlon is troublesome for me. I'm trying to get back to my motor cross days thinking when all be damned and just run over people in front but that has disappeared.
@zikaperic2133

indeed its never exactly 45min... most of the time one spend on travel + shower + etc... it's usually smarter to make session longer if one can sustain

Would be interesting to divide the weekly hours one has for training between the 3 disciplines, and find out which formula will give you the best finish time. For me more time on the bike and run gives me faster times for these disciplines, however more swim time only results in very marginal gains.

i did norseman with 23 min a week swimming. I was around 170 out of the water. Then had around the 115 best bike split. Then after T2 i was almost exactly in the same place as the bike split. The swin didnt make any difference to my placing. As long as you can survive ++ you are good to go in my eyes when you are in my category. The time spent in the pool will pay of much more spent on a bike or running. One year i tried swimming alot more and used 10 min less on the ironman swim. Not worth it if you have to prioritize time
@99cya
@99cya 2 ай бұрын
thats exactly my thinking. just get through the swimming. there is so much more potential to lose time afterwards. one can easily swim 10min slower. wont make a difference as long as your goals arent top level.

I normally go twice a week, but sometimes think the same; investing hours and hours to reduce the swim time by maybe a few minutes 🤔😄
@jnellist46
@jnellist46 2 ай бұрын
Being swim fit is important to get out of the water fresher, not faster. Swim fitness carries over to the second half of the run, more so as race length increases. If you only do enough to survive the swim you are unlikely to run to your full potential.
@pal_lokomotivet2679
@pal_lokomotivet2679 2 ай бұрын
@@jnellist46that's why I wrote survive ++. With a wetsuit swimming is like walking for me with a basic level skills. With 30 min a week I have no problem swimming for hours. It don't cost much at all to swim 10 min slower than "expected". But if you have 5-6 hour pr week before norseman and waist two sessions a week in the pool you are going to do much worse than you could. Iv tried both swimming alot and almost noting. It's mostly a waste of time when you are over a basic level.
@thomasfogel6038

Agree with that comment ! I swim once a week and not every week at the moment due to lack of time (unfortunately) , yet I find this enough to get out of the water relatively fresh for Olympic distance and 70.3. I hope I can swim more often in future though.

Swimmer only, but some old sayings about general conditioning. Over 3 days without training, and you lose conditioning. For every day past that, you will need 2 days to get back to where you were. So, if you only swim once a week, you are losing conditioning, and it will take maybe 2 weeks to get that conditioning back. Since I am 'older' like 73, it seems to take me longer than that.

@robohippy

Depends on what you mean by 'training correctly'. You will lose the aerobic capacity if you lay off much, and swimming is a whole different game than running or cycling.
@robohippy
@robohippy 2 ай бұрын
After thinking about this for a bit, I think I will agree with Phelps. Most triathlon people are not swimmers first, except for Lucy Charles Barkley. Most come from a running and/or biking back ground. There are so many subtleties in swimming that you lose if you don't practice enough. Once a week is not even maintaining. I am a swimmer only, but tune in here because I seek many different swimming instructions to figure out what works best for me. Maybe you can get away with once a week. Maybe not.
