The life of a commercial airliner is generally specified based on the stresses the structure receives over time. Aircraft structures are manufactured with stressed skinned philosophy where the aircraft skin, along with frames, beams, and ribs, is a load carrier. So in today’s video, let’s examine how long these structures last and the factors that come into play…

you should perhaps do a comparison between commercial airline structures vs military..it would be interesting to see the differences with the stresses that they also endure. thank you for this informative information..things that i didn't know and learned.

it’s impressive to see how much engineering it takes to make a metal flying tube that can barely hold its weight but also last 30+ years.

It's also very impressive that being in a metal tube at 36 thousand feet and traveling at 500 knots with the only thing holding you up there being air is somehow safer than being in a car right

I hadn't realised that composite-body aircraft will last for more cycles. That suggests that today's Dreamliners and A350s could be around for anything up to 50 years.

Very interesting video. I did know that the average airliner, if well maintained, can last up to 30 years, but this video provides more detail. Thank you!

If I’m not mistaken, the composite materials aircrafts are suits for long-haul routes as the composite materials better in handling stretch stress rather than force impact from landing and take of. Whilst the metal materials aircrafts are contrary from the composites one. Would love to know more about this. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Re: Composite airframes, As a Retired major airline AMT with 36 years experience and 3 more as an Army Crewchief on the HUEY, I have serious doubts on the longevity as making repairs on the composite type are extremely different and difficult. Then figure in how much more expensive they will be to return to airworthy status,, so at what point is it just more cost effective to scrap it and invest the insurance claim in a newer airframe??
