Mardi Gras Indians are an iconic part of New Orleans culture today. But the tradition was born out of discrimination, with Black people excluded from mainstream white Mardi Gras celebrations. That’s why Gizmo, a Mardi Gras Indian, was driven by a passion to participate in a tradition rooted in rebellion.

The history of this are the Maroons. Many people do not know that. The Indian dress and garb is a direct respect to Maroons which is why when they Honored Louie Armstrong he said it was the greatest honor he ever received in his entire life. He knew that was pure Respect and Louie was a hella rebel even though he didn't act like it to many of his own people. My grandfather would drop everything in his career for any Zulu Tribal meeting and travel with no questions asked when they held a council.

Such a rich history deeply rooted in both African and Native culture, borne out of oppression. The beading, the roles (Chief, spy boy , etc.), the chanting, all of it very significant and the passing down of the tradition from one generation to another also very important. Good piece.

When are we gonna realize as a collective that WE ARE THEM INDIANS!!! We never died off. We let them colonizers make us think we all came off the boat when we was ALWAYS here.

@Gary Hunt It’s true. Most people in the South who have been here since colonial times have some Native ancestry. My family (the non Native side) has been here since the 1600s and the Native side has been here for thousands of years obviously. I have Meherrin and Saponi ancestry on my mom’s side. I also have East Indian from an indentured servant who came over in the early 1600s. My dad’s grandmother had Montauk blood. I’ve traced my lineage to 1380 AD on that side and I know that I am from the Turtle clan. A friend of mine from New Orleans has ancestry from the Houma tribe.

yo, you should check out "Treme", by the creators of the wire. It details life in New Orleans after Katrina and Mardi Gras Indians play a crucial part in it.

Yes. There’s a restaurant that caters on I believe it’s Rampart Street. I went to a wedding there and downstairs was lots of they were the suits worn. All hand made. You will see some of these Indians out for tourist to take pictures with in the French quarter, but they still perform

I just looked it up and it’s on Conti Street. If it wasn’t destroyed and Katrina it’s still here. There’s a big tradition. And one thing that a lot of people are surprised about is the Mardi Gras Indians are black as a rule. I’ve read that they do it to pay homage to the Indians who helped them escape slavery

These people are aboriginals. I read an article with theories about the history of the Mardi Gras Indians saying they black peoples honoring natives who saved them from slavery. I call bull 💩! Why would a group of people design costume with this level of craftsmanship, go through this level of work, secrets meetings and whatnot just to honor another group that don’t even exist anymore? These people are the aboriginal “Indians” PERIOD
