Last weekend, Super Sunday was celebrated in New Orleans. It is the day when African American revelers, known as Mardi Gras Indians, parade through town in their hand-made costumes. Michelle Miller has more on the history of the group.

15 years strong visiting New Orleans. Without a doubt the most culturally important and significant city and people in America. No place like it. I love it.

I wish I would of seen more of Dr. Maurice Martinez. He wrote the book “No, I won’t bow down on that dirty ground”. Great book. I highly recommend it if you want to learn more about the history of the Mardi Gras Indians.

Look up Kadohadacho and the Wichita tribes of Louisiana. Kadohadacho is the name of mixed race of Native / African people. Kadohadacho is recognized by the Caddo nation.

They are Not American Indian..That's even an incorrect term itself..They are African Americans who mask as Mardi Gras Indians to pay homage to Native Americans to thank them for giving run away slaves/& marrons refugee during slavery..It is an over 150 year tradition in New Orleans.

If you are in New Orleans, the Backstreet Cultural Museum is an important place to visit to learn more about this unique culture. I am surprised it was not included in this piece. The founder is a wondeful man and a visionary.

Story time back in slavery when the underground railroad was they way for the slaves to escape the Native Indians in Louisiana would give them refugee so basically this is a way for us to forever pay respects to the Indians

If you really take on and watch the video you can totally tell that the indigenous people had to be very particular of what they say and how they say it during this interview…Where are the photos of the Mongolian “Native Americans”teaching the indigenous Native Americans “their ways”???you can’t find it but you can find old photos of indigenous Native Americans before so-called slavery… They called us copper colored people when white’s came over and colonized this land.

sadly not enough know of this, i have seen evidence that shows that blacks were already here. the only accepted indians are the redskins that resemble asians in mongolia and indonesia, and whites that mingled with the redskin natives and now go around lying saying they either full or half indian.

The crazy part is, CBS did'n't tell you the whole truth. We are the New Orleans, Indians. We are not from Africa!!! Indian Removal Act of 1830 removed my family from St James, Louisiana to the levee by Audubon Park. Then the gentrified that area and moved us into the city UPT by the St. Thomas projects and had the audacity to call us levee rats!!!!

Actually it is not. This tradition began to honor the indigenous Americans who saved our ancestors that were runaway slaves. It dates back to the 1800s and many of the people who participate are Afro-indigenous themselves, including myself and my family. Please do your research. We have also been celebrated and thanked by Indigenous groups across the US for honoring their ancestors and showing the world our strength and survival despite colonialism.

It's an insult that the 5 civilized tribes. didn't compensate the reparations that was owed to the Black slaves the indians owned. descendants of Slaves is still waiting for their ancestors reservations,land,casinos,banks,etc. 1866 Indian Treaties which was passed by Congress but never was established.

It's so interesting that African descendant people in Brazil during Carnival display African iconography and images. The costumes are regalia from African tribes. America with its sick Afro phobia makes AA represent another group other than who they come from. Sad.

The culture of masking Indian was not created nor influenced by the American establishment. Well over a century ago the culture emerged from the spirit, heart and soul and its originators. You know what you know. It's in the DNA of most.

You're SUPER IGNORANT. The history of this goes back to SLAVERY when the Native Seminole people would HELP AFRICANS ESCAPE from slavery. The Seminole warriors raided plantations, freeing freeing Africans. These Africans Native peoples formed communities living in the swamps TOGETHER! They married each other and FOUGHT yt people TOGETHER. The Mardi gras Indians is a tribute to Native peoples for their help and support against YOU, oops🙄👆🏾

The American Descendant of Slaves community in New Orleans is honoring the native - specifically Seminole community - for their willingness to not only assist the enslaved ancestors of those who are Mardi Gras Indians current day to escape slavery but also for teaching the formerly enslaved how to survive in the bayous and swamps of lower Louisiana It's not my fault, the American Descendant of Slaves community fault or the Indigenous People fault that Europeans decided to be barbarians and force the removal of native people and enslavement of Africans Anyway don't get mad at history LEARN FROM IT
