How Mariah Carey Made “Fantasy” With ODB | Genius Level

5 жыл бұрынOn November 14, legendary musician and songwriter Mariah Carey stopped by Genius for the latest installment of ‘Genius Level,’ our live conversation series with icons of the music business, including influential artists, songwriters, producers, and executives. During the conversation with Genius’ Head of Artist Relations Rob Markman, the 2019 Songwriters Hall of Fame nominee delivered a retrospective on her career just a few days before the release of her 15th studio album, ‘Caution.’
Mariah also reminisced about working with late Wu-Tang Clan member Ol' Dirty Bastard on “Fantasy (Bad Boy Remix),” a collaboration which helped make it cool for rappers to jump on R&B and pop tracks.
“They were like what is she doing? They really didn’t understand and it just became a thing,” Mariah remembered. “I was fortunate enough to have Ol' Dirty Bastard on the record ‘cause I was a huge fan… but certain people were like, 'I could do that. What is that? What is he doing?’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, just trust me, it’s, we’re good.’”

It was Mary J Blige who had the rappers on RnB tracks ... she was the first to do this Mariah came in when the trend was at its peak and diddy was the man behind that trend. The bending of rappers with RnB music was diddy’s idea. The trend originated from New York City mixtapes where DJs took RnB acapellas and threw them on hip hop tracks. You don’t hear mixtapes like that anymore because the RIAA wasn’t trying to let DJs profit off of such material because they felt it altered music without permission as oppose to accepting it as free promotion. Thank the DJ for giving diddy the idea and made Mary’s first and second album plus a remix album of what’s the 411. Bring back the real DJs back and dump cornballs like Akademicks who doesn’t even DJ and Khalid and the rest of them clowns who don’t DJ but try to title themselves as one.

Just a little history for those who don't know, but Jody Watley's song "Friends" back in 1989 was the first RnB/Pop song to feature a rap artist ( Rakim). She was the true pioneer.
