Editor’s Note: Previs is a collaboration between previs artists, directors, producers, and other department heads. Directors have a role in guiding and producing the previs, and some furnish the storyboarding materials on which previs is based.
We talked to Hollywood's busiest visualization studio, The Third Floor, to find out why visualization is the secret MVP of Marvel movies.
The Third Floor is one of the world's top visualization studios and has worked on 19 of the 23 installments in Marvel's "Infinity Saga." From previs and stuntvis to techvis and postvis, The Third Floor's work on Marvel movies runs through the entire production process. The first previsualizations of a Marvel film can begin well in advance of its release date, often before the screenplay is fully finished. Find out how Marvel visualizes its movies years before filmmaking and how this practice has helped the MCU rise its position of box-office dominance today.
The Third Floor has done visualization work for 2010's "Iron Man 2"; 2011's "Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger"; 2012's "The Avengers"; 2013's "Iron Man 3" and "Thor: The Dark World"; 2014's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Guardians of the Galaxy"; 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Ant-Man"; 2016's "Captain America: Civil War" and "Doctor Strange"; 2017's "Spider-Man: Homecoming," "Thor: Ragnarok," and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2"; 2018's "Avengers: Infinity War," "Deadpool 2," "Ant-Man and the Wasp," and "Venom"; and 2019's "Captain Marvel," "Avengers: Endgame," and "Spider-Man: Far from Home."

they even tell you how to aim the camera right. They do all the calculations and math before filming so they can do it fast, actors are busy and expensive, you can't keep asking them to reshoot just because you aimed the camera wrong. Also, the post-production takes a long effing time, to piece together something out of basically nothing, having this helps the post-production team know immediately what to put together.

Right? The fact there's not a dedicated writing team while creating the movies explains so much. Mad respect to the previs team for what they're able to make, but it really does explain why so many plotholes and weird threads pop up. Rather than having a writing team dedicated to making a cohesive meaningful story, they have a previs team dedicated to creating cool and badass shots, with scenes interjected every now and then for whatever they find meaningful at the time. You can't create consistently groundbreaking stories without the kind of experienced writing that a dedicated team would provide. It's just weird.

The fact that crushed my soul is that they map out every scene of the movie even before a director and cinematographer is signed for the project....
@ft.jackjimmy7282
@ft.jackjimmy7282 3 жыл бұрын
@@17.ketansurana8 I don't think they map out everything, just the really complicated action scenes or impactful scenes. You have to realize not all directors are well-versed in the plots as the studio does, they still have to obey the studio's rules. I do get that in order to make a large production, you have to cut some corners like having a previs team to take the guesswork out of everything. That's why it only takes 2-3 years to film a Marvel movie and not 10+ plus years like Avatar. It's a sacrifice they took in order to crunch out these movies in a tight timeline so they won't lose audience interest. The directors are there to provide the overall tone and an interpreter of previs for actors and crew to understand. The directors can also have their vision be prototyped and tested with the previs team before filming instead of realizing that everything doesn't look right after filming. However, I do agree that Marvel movies are not made for everybody, not everyone finds superheroes as meaningful, my mom thinks they're lame, but it is still owned by Disney, who have very high standards for these things. And it's only logical that 20 plus movies made from the same studio are bound to have repeated factors or you risk people questioning if the connection is even there at all. To be honest, I do think there are some weak movies like third Iron Man, 3rd Thor, and Captain Marvel, but I don't think there are significant plotholes that jeopardize the overall story.
@MythopoeicNavid
@MythopoeicNavid 3 жыл бұрын
@@ft.jackjimmy7282 What's actually a production achievement or breakthrough for Marvel Studios is how much they are still operating with the same ethos as Marvel Comics -- not only editorial and writing and in-house productions, but what this previs arrangement reminds me of is how in the comics they'd always have inkers and even pencilers who would "Redraw" images to better fit the company model (controversial of course, esp. when DC used it on Jack Kirby's renditions of Superman and Jimmy Olsen when he was crafting The Fourth World). But at least for the films, at least Marvel continues to have very consistent fight sequences that are entertaining. The comparison between this and storyboarded action sequences come to mind as both make the action-component of the films pretty stellar (both DC and Marvel). However significant that is tho, one has to question just how much that matters in the overall quality of the film. One of my favourite Marvel films is the Black Panther and its final-act action just felt rushed and not altogether original (despite the entirety of the film from its set-designs, character-dynamics, worlds, themes, etc. feeling VERY unique and unlike most MCU fares). Similarly, WandaVision felt very properly experimental and once the MCUisms began, it actually popped off and felt right at home. I loved that sort of visual similarity. And the action sequences were still great. However, that's the problem tho that most of the action-choreography need to be reassessed as well. Perhaps there's a way to move forward with this tool and still make unique action and visual sequences within the limits of a tentpole studio production and still come out with original and unique content. WW84 for instance, got a lot of criticism but I loved how it was inspired by Cirque du Soleil, and it just feels like more could've been done there along those lines. Say if the next TransFormers movie decides to make a predominantly "close-quarters" style bar-room brawl between giant robots or say if they remade Troy with a focus on individual fighting styles (Greek boxing and wrestling are mentioned in the Iliad), it'd be a different visual language altogether. Ideally one cannot put the director on the back-burner with this. Like a video-game director, you keep the director at the helm, and that's somewhere Marvel differs in their approach. All of these are Kevin Feige films and their successes and shortcomings all come back to his creative input. I say that he's fairly modest about taking credit as it might be a bit strange for consumer-perception, but from what we've known Feige's involvement in the conceptual and planning and writing stages feel like something he deserves more credit for.

@@Arashocky And you can also see that third floor makes multiple storyboards, so no, they haven't "directed" the movie yet. Not all the shots done in previs are shot frame to frame in the final movie, only the most important ones. Kevin obviously works on these important scenes with third floor, there's no one more capable than him after all. But most of the movie is still left for the directors to do their thing. That's why they make multiple storyboards, to give the director a core idea, and the directors take it up from there. And Kevin feige having control over the most important scenes is great imo, he's the marvel mega nerd after all. Also, a lot of times directors approach marvel with concepts( like James Gunn, Chloe zhao) after which they're hired. So yes, most of the times directors are also probably involved in the pre vis process
@Arashocky
@Arashocky 2 жыл бұрын
@@parry111 I agree with you on the process that Marvel Studios uses for their movies and there are exceptions that make them look like it was directed by one person like James Gunn who's a big comic book guy like Feige and also does his own storyboards and writes his own script which makes him a perfect choice for superhero movies. But not every marvel movie has a unique vision like Gunn's. So they take the safe process which I'm not against but it's pretty clear some of the directors don't interfere with the creative decisions on action scenes already made by 3rd floor because they don't have Gunn's experience which makes the Black Widow a great example of that. Gotta admit Wandavision almost changed my mind about that impression for its creativity and cool concept until the last episode brought it back to the same old Marvel action scenes again!

in reality, there are still demands for independently produced films where traditional methods are utilized. I'm not downgrading traditional movie-making but when you're in the business of cranking out tight scheduled high production action movies, you'd need innovative tools to make sure it's fast and saves money with high quality looks to it. The pessimism is from the idea that things done this way shouldn't have the success it has. And I agree, I haven't seen a Marvel movie winning an oscar yet unless it's politics-related. It's best to know what you're into and what you're not and understand how the movie industry actually works, it's not as simple as most people think it is, where you have one director writing the plot, calculate all camera and lighting angles, and direct talents as well that would take 10 years to film one movie instead of only 2-3.

Wright left because he didn't want to add Falcon's sequence and other Avengers connections. That's about it. Actually, and contrary to what you say, someone like Wright enjoys the chance to previsualise EVERYTHING since he loves to make visually elaborated shots and this technology enables the director to explore all sorts of camera angles and moves, adding more control in planning the whole thing in advance. In fact, by the time Wright left he had been working on the movie previs for months, since filming was about to start in a few weeks. He even had shot a small test scene YEARS before the movie started production (maybe you can still find the leaked sequence on KZfaq, which was shot by Wright himself back in 2012).
@BenStockdale

@@georgezee5173 I guess tbf it may have been more plot/story driven with Edgar. But I guess what I was getting at is that by signing on as a director for Marvel, you do seem to lose a certain amount of control just because of all the machinery Marvel now has to assist a filmmaker in creating the film. I do find it interesting that the Russo Brothers who have seemingly worked very well with Marvel, come from a very collaborative television background rather than an auteur film background. I think they're used to playing in someone else's established world and are happy to sacrifice a certain amount of control to enable that to go smoothly. However Taika Watiti and James Gunn show that it is possible to have a personal touch within Marvel, but I imagine they still had to make compromises.

@@BenStockdale It's obvious all these movies are supervised, since they work like a TV show on steroids, with Kevin Feige being the showrunner. But we were discussing here the use of previs/animatics, and it's simply not true those are made before the director is in the project nor without his control. Precisely Marvel hires their directors years in advance, even before they have a final scriptm, and they're hired because of their takes on the stories (I can guess Feige has an overall idea beforehand for each movie to make the MCU go forward, he let's candidates know that starting point and they elaborate on it and even change it within certain limits to impress him).

It limits our ability to make choices - often one of our greatest contributions to a production. When there are so many effects and money involved, I get it. I’m fortunate to work with Hideo Kojima on Death Stranding, as he allowed us to still make choices in rehearsal and even during shooting.

To all the people think directors are useless because of previs Think about it Movies from mcu are produced each year to keep the continuity of movies interconnecting each other. If they make directors to work on complicated stuff like camera placements and pre visualization which can be easily done by using softwares basically made for it then production can br wrapped much faster and time(also money cause time is money) is saved. Even after handing over previs, job of directors is not over cause they have to take the call which shot needs to make it to the movie and which shouldn't , after all human judgement cannot be replaced no matter how many improved technologies try to better their job.

Previs is a useful tool but having that done before the director is even hired and the script is even finished is kinda ridiculous. I get the money reasons and I understand it’s efficient but having all those shots already planned? That takes out some of the fun and creativity. A movie should be the director’s vision. It should be how they interpret the script. Previs is expensive and u may hire the right director for the job but if they don’t like the previs then u r throwing a lot of money away redoing it. Scripts aren’t a 3 draft type thing. You are writing 10-30+ drafts of your script. There are so much changes between drafts that starting this process early on doesn’t really make sense. This should be a process that starts when the director is hired and the script is in a good place

Love the work that previs puts into these movies, but... it really does make the directors lose their creative freedom. Hitchcock drew his own storyboards, others like Clint Eastwood and John Ford rarely used storyboards, but collaborate with their cinematographer on how a scene will look. The more something is visualized even in scenes without CGI just seems to take the freedom away from the directors, cinematographers, probably even the actors.

Starting from the korea scenes you'll start to notice the downgrade of VFX, but yeah the final part was really terrible, they should have brought the stuntment inside the BP suits instead.

No it’s actually because compared to other Marvel movies the Black Panther vfx team had a little over 6 weeks for the final fight

It's depressing how there's no director's vision anymore when the final product was all decided by execs and Q&A testing years before the film is even filmed.

Nope. The pre-viz shots are determined by the scripts and the directors themselves based off on storyboards and meetings with the directors. The pre-viz shots are then re-fined further by the directors, via further deliberations, to a point where the directors are satisfied that their vision for the scene is met by the pre-viz team which will then be used for the final shot that will be done either on location or created wholesale by the VFX department. But you go ahead, and create a narrative that is utterly false and imagined.
