After moving from Hong Kong to Texas as a teenager, Mary H.K. Choi fell in love with reading and knew she wanted to turn her passion for magazines into something greater. She got her chance when she left for NYC and landed an internship at Mass Appeal, which she funneled into a gig at XXL and, eventually, her own magazine, MissBehave. From there, she redefined the writer's role in the digital age, crafting powerful works across a variety of mediums, including issue #1 of Lady Deadpool, DJ Khaled's biography The Keys and her new YA book, Emergency Contact.

This is so maddening to me. This has 87,000 views. Only 87,000. This interview literally changed my life and direction and so few know about it. Thank you for this series. I have every video downloaded just in case I need encouragement and don't have wifi.

Such a good episode of Blueprint! I love how it went full circle from her starting off in Texas with nothing to do but read, to end up publishing a novel at the time of filming. I'm loving this series so much. It's inspiring me not just to get off my butt and tackle my fear of failure, but to branch out and try whatever I feel like trying.

Cool story. How does she make a steady income with all of these one-off gigs?
@MaryHKChoi-xg1no
@MaryHKChoi-xg1no 6 жыл бұрын
what ncb said. i always assume the next check is my last and save. TBH I always also make sure to ask for my rate. One-off gigs mean a certain amount of flexibility and unless the job a) is a VERY good look in terms of like reputation/a clear level up OR b) SUPER informative like a skillset I always wanted to learn or with someone I can learn from OR c) REAL money... I'm always ALWAYS ready to walk away. (Note the OR; One usually comes at the cost of the other two). Like, the only resource you will never be able to negotiate more of is time. So you can't hate the job while you're doing it and the only way to guarantee that is if it's worth it to you. Also, always ask someone who is experienced how much you should charge if you have no idea. NEVER be embarrassed to talk about money. Also lol what you should charge has nothing to do with what you need, it's about the value you can bring. Bosses never want to hear about your 'needs' it has nothing to do with them.

She uses words like"brand" and "voice." Started with what she wanted to be - hard-hitting, journalism, opinion. She fails upward into comic books. I suspect the reason she has a "career" (criminally underpaid if she works in NYC) is because she's hot. I enjoy her intellect, but there's nothing there. She's very much into herself and her "imprint." She's more a personality, less a human being.
