Menopause can really impact mental health, but there are effective treatments, you don’t just have to grit your way through it, so let’s talk about it, and I’m excited to have menopause expert Dr. Mary-Claire Haver here to share the medical aspect of it.
Menopause is not just hot flashes, it’s not just the end of your period. It is a process that leads to changes throughout your entire body. Perimenopause begins 7-10 years before your period stops so you can start to see changes in your entire body, your sleep and your mental health as early as your mid-30’s. We start having a decline in estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen has been shown to have a modulating effect on mood-regulating neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. And that’s going to make us more vulnerable to stress.
So it’s common to see, especially in perimenopause, symptoms like:
Depression
Anxiety- a lot of women experience more worry, restlessness, and physical symptoms like heart palpitations. Which can also lead to more symptoms of
Panic Disorder and
Irritability: Hormonal changes can make women more prone to mood swings and frustration, affecting their interactions with others.
It’s also very common for women to experience difficulty sleeping, insomnia, night sweats or early morning wakening- which can contribute to more irritability and
that takes us to …Brain fog. Some women experience memory lapses and difficulty concentrating during menopause, which can be really frustrating.
And this is all in addition to the common things people think about when it comes to menopause, hot flashes, night sweats, and metabolism changes which can make your body change quickly, in energy levels or weight gain.
And all of this, from lack of sleep to physical symptoms can impact your self-esteem and relationships, and clearly your mental health.

Thankfully I see a kiniesologist who treats my whole body. HRT is kind of a short term fix because you can't stay on it forever. Your body is turning down the production of hormones for a reason! Adding it back in isn't the answer. My Dr is treating my symptoms with oils and other supplements. Highly recommend seeing a Dr like mine!!

My anxiety went through the roof when I started menopause. I was put on anti depressants and docs refused to check my hormones. "You're too young to be menopausal". I was 43 almost 44. I had all the symptoms. Hot flashes, (waking up with the bed soaking wet and having to flip the mattress and sleeping with towels under me to minimise that), lack of sleep, incontinence, mood swings, brain fog, memory loss..... Skip ahead 10 years and docs are STILL refusing to check hormones. I'm now 53. I've sorted myself out with bhrt and only 43 days in and my anxiety is GONE. Hot flashes gone. Incontinence gone. Mood swings gone. Sleeping like a baby. Sick and tired of docs fobbing women off and then telling us that what we're going through is "normal". Nothing normal about this. My darling mother died at the age of 67 from a massive heart attack. No heart issues prior. She wasn't on hrt. I often wonder if she had been would she still be here or would we have gotten more years with her. I'm a HUGE fan of Dr. Mary Claire Haver. She's out there empowering women and giving us the facts we need and the right questions to ask when dealing with "reluctant" doctors.

I looked to see if I had written the comment because this was exactly what happened to me!! I was put on anti depressants and Xanax, along with sleeping pills, and meds were added and added until I was on a total of 16 meds. It's criminal how I was treated/mistreated. One bioidentical hormone replacement treatment and I slept for the first time in 10 years!

@@Taradearman27 2 words...self pay. I found a local provider who is highly trained in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and pay them for an implant 3-4 times a year. Treatment includes bloodwork prior to each visit and they have added additional tests (vitamin levels, thyroid, etc) for me at no charge. When I did the math, it wasn't anymore than what I was paying in co-pays for prescriptions and to see specialists!

What’s crazy is it happens to nurses, too. And, not just me. I have had hip pain that feels like a nerve is pinched and the pain radiates down my leg. I straight out asked for an MRI. Could I get one? No. I got an x ray which was negative and a referral for physical therapy. “Can’t justify ordering an MRI unless you have muscle weakness associated with it.” Pain and tingling is not enough I guess. I know what I’m talking about, so why not just believe me when I say it’s not a bone issue, it’s a nerve issue. I wasn’t asking for pain meds, either. But, if I were, that shouldn’t have mattered either

I am 74!still having symptoms.. 4 years ago I had a hysterectomy and my ovaries removed.. My depression is much worse and I keep needing to go to the 🚽.. Will I ever be 'normal' again? I have been told by Dr Newson (menopause expert Uk.. Her oldest patient is 86!

I really understand this! I finally had a total hysterectomy in 2019 due to constant cysts. I had issues with bad painful periods and pms all my life, so to me, it seemed like a lifesaver. And, at first, it was. Then came the hot flashes and angry mood swings! I was totally unprepared for this new body, and/or, stage of life! I already had issues with depression/anxiety before the hysterectomy. There have been tons of changes and loss in my life that just does not help. I DO have twice weekly estradiol patches that help a bit, but I need a doctor willing to look at the whole mind and body.

I started perimemopause a few years ago. Since I was the first in my friend circle, I was shocked about the impact and the severity of my symptoms. My two main symptoms were anger attacks and sleep issues. The anger attacks were shocking, I basically experienced moments of blinding rage. I've never before in my life experienced that. It scared me. Luckily they only lasted about a year. The sleeping problems still remain and still impact my daily life. I fall asleep at the normal time, wake up for two to three hours, fall asleep again until I have to get up. I am so happy that you discuss this issue on your channel, as I don't hear many people talk about it.

I am 51. I was diagnosed with a major depression by a psychiatrist in august 4, 2023. I was prescribed antidepressants. I stopped taking them in november 2023. I am trying to get rid of my depression without taking antidepressants. I pay attention to my diet and try to exercise a lot. This information is very helpful. Thank you for explaining what woman go through during their menopause. 🤨

Exercise is one of the best things you can do regularly that will help alleviate so many negative symptoms, and also have a protective factor for the future

I think if you find those work for you, then that’s amazing. I’m happy for you! Sometimes meds can help too. Sometimes alpha stim might help. Yoga, mindfulness, and even checking to make sure you don’t have anemia or a vitamin D deficiency 😊 be well!

@@mostlyvoid.partiallystars I read a book from an American clinical psychologist, Stephen S. Ilardi. He researched the use of antidepressants. In his book, he talks about the foods that can reduce depression in depressed people. He recommends consuming three bowls of oatmeal a week. I followed his advice. I consume one bowl of oatmeal on Monday, one bowl on Wednesday and one bowl on Friday. He developed a program in which he recommends depressive people to take Omega 3 by taking fish capsules. I prefer to get that Omega 3 into my body through food. I eat a bowl of oatmeal in the morning , I eat sardines on bread for lunch and zalm and mackerel for dinner. I have been using this lifestyle to deal with my depression since January 25, 2024. During my depression I had lost a lot of weight. I've now gained weight again. 🙂

Thank you! Thank you! My anxiety came out of the blue when I turned 50 and NO ONE believed it was my hormones except me. No one cared that it started abruptly and it was decided by all the doctors I just developed anxiety from stress. I had to stop working as a nurse because of the panic attacks. And the gaslighting! It was horrible. And I worked with doctors!! I hope so many women watch this so they don’t get caught in the cycle that I did.

Bawling while watching this. Had to have a radical hysterectomy during the Pandemic and even on an estrogen patch I'm no longer the person I once was. I'm 49 and suddenly found myself in menopause with no slow transition into it. It affects everyone in your life because in my case the strong person my children once knew is now weak and struggling with anxiety. God bless you for touching on this topic. The insomnia is horrible. 😭

I went to my gynecologist not too long ago who is a man and complained of peri-menopause brain fog asking if there is anything I can do. He told me it may just be me getting old yet I am in my 40s. Thankfully, I knew he was full of nonsense 🙄 this is a good topic to cover as the only help I have found with all of this is on KZfaq…from women doctors especially.

Timely for me. My OCD has skyrocketed with Perimenopause. I’m now on HRT, thankfully but oh boy - so many Drs just said it was psychological not hormonal. I finally found a good doctor.

I am 54 and have been suffering from ocd and anxiety for the past 6/7 years (mainly contamination ocd which went full on since the pandemic). I've noticed my ocd and anxiety have actually worsened lately so I'm starting to wonder if this might be connected to hormones fluctuations etc. Thank you!

I am 65 now but 10-12 years i too felt that a truck struck me. I was always an extrovert and social all my life but after menopause (no hr) my personality changed become a recluse depressed don’t want any interaction with anyone even my husband and children. Taking Cymbaltav from last 14 years and most of the time I feel like a zombie and lost 😞

I always had anxiety and depression around my cycle, but it got debilitating the year I turned 39. Nobody asked me about my cycles, they recommended an ssri and therapy, which did help. Now I'm experiencing seeats, brain fog, disrupted sleep and high a1c and am weirdly relieved to find out that this might all be related. Thank you.

Omg the gaslighting. I can’t even. I live in one of the fasting growing areas of the US and still had to travel 6 hours away to get a hernia diagnosed and corrected, despite literally telling a local surgeon what was wrong.

I can attest to this being SO true. I exhibited signs of peri-menopause for years, night sweats, etc. I also went through a really stressful time in life right toward the end of my peri-menopause and boom... claustrophobia, which then led to a panic attack, which led to terrifying existential questions. Menopause is a very real signal of aging and that can trigger thoughts about those existential questions of life and death and our purpose and why are we here in the first place.When you are in a place where you are already prone to mental health difficulties because of hormonal imbalance that can absolutely become a major issue.

I highly recommend a kinesiologist. I see one and he saved my life. I didn't do ANYTHING for 5 months. My anxiety was through the roof and I couldn't sleep. I'm able to work again (I work for myself restoring furniture) and I can sleep. My anxiety has almost completely disappeared, and I feel like I want to live again.

I experience depression and anxiety and have been treated for 20 years however menopause has had me so scattered in my thoughts I am always running behind and catastrophizing every little thing. My mother even ask me if I was using drugs ! Everything is an emergency seems like and I run late to every thing

First, thank you for this. So important to have this information given how useless most doctors are when it comes to menopause. Second, I think we should push back on the expectation that menopausal women should carry on working full time, deal with elderly parents and all the other million things that get dumped on us during this difficult time.

Thank you for this! As someone who has struggled with mental health all my life, I did defo see a massive downturn as I hit 40. There were lots of other factors but it’s taken me a long time to appreciate how much physical changes play a part too .

I am so glad you interviewed Dr Mary Clare Haver. I’ve been following her and she has such great information regarding the treatment of menopause. My menopause symptoms have been primarily anxiety. I am on. HRT and It helps a lot. Still some. Anxiety but very manageable.I was lucky that right before I went into menopause I had a very good doctor who talked to me about it and told me about my options and I had also seen an Oprah episode where they talked about it. There are still a lot of doctors that are clueless regarding menopause.

FINALLY! So grateful for your acknowledgement concerning this issue! I have PMDD and still cannot get any help from gynecologist, doctors, psychiatrist for the anxiety that comes with menopause. I'm 56 and am still going through menopause with ZERO help. They just change my antidepressant. I now just alienate myself in order to deal with my physical and psychological effects from not being HEARD or HELPED!!

As I listen, I can feel the anxiety in my chest. At 47, I have all the symptoms you mentioned. I thought the heart palpitations were from drinking too much caffeine because I’m always dragging. My doctors give me conflicting advice and treatments and say I’m not in menopause yet. My estrogen is high so they prescribed progesterone that makes me super anxious. Oh ya, and my body has zero testosterone. All I seem to produce is estrogen. Ugh. I’m so over this. Thank you for covering this topic

@@redruby747 Get off that nonsense asap. Highly addictive. I can't understand doctors prescribing that cr*p at the very least without giving a serious warning. I got prescribed it once and was under the care of a social worker at the time (I had nervous breakdown following on from a sexual assault). The social worker "strongly advised" me not to touch them because they're so addictive. "You'll have a hell of a time coming off them if you start" were the words she used. I never touched them.

​@@bluecurlygirlNot true for everyone. I was prescribed it once...well, I had several refills, but they were for 15 pills "as needed" and I barely ever took them. I barely felt anything from them, either, except a little more tired. It's SUPER important to be educated about benzodiazapenes (sp), 100%. But not everyone is going to be addicted to them, and even just having them for a placebo effect helped me immensely when I was going through the worst of my anxiety attacks. Different medicines work (and don't work) for different people.

@@bluecurlygirl my doctor prescribed lorazepam, also a benzo. I take it very seldom, usually when my anxiety keeps me from falling asleep. I hate meds so I would honestly rather deal with the anxiety most days… I would strongly recommend everyone watch the video from Hotze Health featuring Dr. William Davis where he talks about the importance of gut health. Our micro flora has more to do with our mental health and hormones than a deficiency of benzo’s and antidepressants!

I am now 48 and had the onset of premenopause from about 3 to 4 years ago. It was really challenging as I had more edgy moments and my skin started having rosacea. Plus my mom was diagnosed with cancer and stayed with me during her treatment. My teenage daughter suddenly suffered from severe panic attacks and depression. 😮 I was like what is going on?! Anyway, I started to take supplements like magnesium, inositol, sesamin extract and flaxseed oil plus some light exercises and intermittent fasting. Gradually I felt my energy returned and thankfully am feeling much better now. The fight for happiness still goes on but I am in a better state to deal with it. 💪💪💪

Thank you for this video! It's so validating. I'm 42 and quite certain I'm already experiencing perimenopause...but I was utterly gaslit by both my primary care doctor AND my favorite naturopathic physician. They seem to think that if you're still having regular periods, you can't be in perimenopause. I swear that even certified health care providers don't know JACK about menopause either unless they specialize in it...and even then, I'm still skeptical. Ugh. I hope I can try BHRT one of these days. Thankfully, I'm learning that staying away from caffeine, intermittent fasting on a mostly plant-based diet, and getting some exercise daily helps manage most of my symptoms. But PMS week is a disaster area.

I would recommend trying the HRT before antidepressants. It's pretty much the same as taking birth control, although more positive for you.

Thank you so much Emma! So helpful. I was diagnosed with panic anxiety disorder in 2021. Along with other mental health issues. On medication, and doing all of the things mentioned. I’ve always had anxiety and mild depression.. but in 2020, the anxiety got out of control.. I am 60, and I’m sure menopause is a big factor in it. I will pray about HRT. However, I’ve been doing well with medication and all my supplements and being very proactive in my mental health.

I’ve been dealing with perimenopause symptoms for two years and still cannot find a doctor who will listen to me and thinks my insomnia and anxiety can be cured with anti depressants. When all that did was make it WORSE! Not one doctor said “gee, your in your late 40s, maybe we should check your hormones”! I had to do my own research and ask for them to check it. And even still, they don’t care how awful I feel or how much sleep I have lost! Meanwhile my anxiety is through the roof and my thyroid is also out of whack! I finally have an appointment with a hormone specialist in a couple of weeks. So 🤞🏼 that I get some actual help!! Again, thank you for your channel!!

Excellent video! So needed. My anxiety levels reached new unimaginable heights with panic attacks and palpitations. It was very scary. HRT definitely helped me. I also got awful muscular pains. The HRT helped clear up this symptom also.

I have depression/anxiety and was diagnosed with ADHD at age 45. The last 3 years have been absolute hell for me as I entered and endure perimenopause. Brain fog, anxiety, weight gain, insomnia, incontinence, migraines, apathy and constant fatigue. If this was a mans issue there would be much more attention and options. I have just started HRT at my behest and have started to feel better finally. I am so glad there are people and professionals advocating for the treatment of peri/menopause. Thank you!

Many women when they enter menopause are not aware of the changes that take place in their psyche when estrogen levels drop. Knowledge about depression and anxiety disorders in this period of life is little known and women do not know what is happening to them. I was in this group too.🤗🤗🤗

Gaslighting: i went into the ER with chest pain and shortmess of breath. I was having a legit heart attack and i was sent home with a paper on chest pain and how the ER does not prescribe pain medicine. I went back a couple of days later and they kept me for 10 days, the bloodwork showed i had a heart attack.

I’m 63 and I’m pretty sure I’ve been in menopause since I was 55, never really noticed it before then, that year I lost my mom, my grandmother, my dog. Anxiety, fear, guilt, brain fog, anger, frustration has hit the roof! It’s exhausting! 😔

My mental health issues were greatly exacerbated by surgical menopause with no hormone replacement. That was 20 years ago and my mental health has continued to be less than optimal. After listening to this I think I will bring it up to my doctors.

I found Dr Marie Claire from my OBGYN who absolutely RAVES about her. I'm currently doing the Galvingston diet in hopes of helping get my cholesterol levels down and drop the extra weight I've been stubbornly gaining despite eating healthy and working out five days a week for over a year now. Perimenopause is no joke. The singer you can get a handle on it, the easier the transition will be.

I started dealing with severe depression sometime after I had my annual gynecologist appointment last year and turned 59. I was also diagnosed with tremors of the head neck and arms last year, so I’m not sure if that has anything to do with the depression.

Same. My anxiety sky rocketed a year ago when I was 59 and I developed many many other symptoms I never had before - at 9 years post! I've been working hard with diet, exercise, self-care, change in my spirituality, and therapy to feel better and it's paying off. Hang in there! ❤

Great video. Affirming that I noticed my adhd symptoms get a lot worse around 38. Was unmedicated before but thankfully regular adhd meds help now with emotional regulation and executive functioning.

I'm 55. My anxiety went through the roof during perimenopause. Like really bad. I initially did not want to take HRT, and told my doc as much. But the anxiety got so bad that I was desperate to try anything. I called doc and said, please give me hormones. He did (estrogen + progesterone). It actually made me worse. I went from terrible sleep to almost zero sleep, tossing and turning all night in the bed with anxiety. Really horrendous. I tried for a month, and then gave up, as it was so terrible. HRT did not help me, but it apparently does help many women. I ended up just riding it out. Menopause is a blessing to me because I don't get migraines anymore (I used to get a 3 to 5-day migraine with every single period), and my adenomyosis went away (only cure is hysterectomy or menopause), and of course not having periods is great. So the rough patch was rough, but I got through it, and now am relieved.

Progesterone makes me sleepy yet it makes it where I absolutely cannot fall asleep. Apparently, this is not very common, but I have the same reaction to certain opioid pain medications. Very weird.

I tried HRT. It was the worst thing for me. I broke out with acne worst then when I was 16, and I was bleeding again. Gyno told me to stop immediately. I did now I meditate and that helps me. ❤

Any doctor I have seen has shrugged off menopause and just dealt with everything else. So I have the night sweats, hot flashes, going from a great sleeper to a so so sleeper, periods of major brain fog

Thank you for this. I am 44 and know perimenopause is coming soon. I don't like having a female body because it seems like such a huge burden. I've struggled with anxiety since my teens so I worry that this will make things worse. I already exercise regularly, have a regular sleep schedule and eat mostly healthy so I hope that helps me sail through this change without too much difficulty. I have no desire to be on hormones for the rest of my life though, that sounds very expensive with our broken and overpriced healthcare system.

wow this all happened to me, once with surgical menopause and then a natural menopause. It took estradiol replacement to restore me back to some normalcy and sleep.

OMG Thank you so much !!! Anxiety and related insomnia/anorexia were the only symptoms of menopause I had, apart from end of menses. No hot flashes, no bursts of sadness/anger/joy, nothing that doctors usually relate to it and nobody, at the time (in 1999), not even my pharmacist, saw a link with my very early onset of total menopause (47 years old). I was treated for depression only and medically "gaslighted" until my Md went into retirement and I had a new AND menopaused Md : she understood that I was going through a very sudden and brutal onset of menopause (without having had pre-menopausal symptoms), associated with a severe "burn-out syndrome" from work overload at my job.

I wonder if this is the culprit causing all my episodes. I've had them under control but out of the blue, I get hit with severe panic distress. It's after 2 am and I woke up to my heart pounding and body spasms ...this is my second attack in the night and like the first time, I feel like it's out of the blue...versus having one in the day where the episode can be associated with things that you are aware of. I was not even having a bad dream.

​@@annmartin1376you have to balance all the hormones, not just estrogen, which Dr's rarely do. They give an estradiol patch and send you on your way. Nothing gets balanced with 1 hormone.

I've had depression on and off (unforch mostly on) since postpartum with my 2nd child. I'm 55 years old now and been fully menopausal for 3 years now. Probably no coincidence that I've had a constant dysthymia for the past 3 years as well. I'm pretty high functioning for as bad as I feel a lot of the time. I read that after a few years in menopause, your brain slowly gets used to the big change in hormones. I am so utterly clinging to that hope. I hope my brain down-regulates to a new, non-fluctuating level of hormones. I don't want to even know if it's more likely that depression just gets worse and worse. I am clinging to the hope that it will get better and better. I've gone to counseling and been on various antidepressants for decades.

There was a Menopause Festival- A-Z and celebrating that stage of life. advertised years ago in Tweed Heads NSW Australia. I didn't attend, busy and I didn't know I was going through menopause.
