Testing out the new Federal Punch defensive ammo for .22 LR in a rifle and a handgun, and comparing it to the old standard of .22 LR self defense ammo the CCI stinger. I am running all through the chronograph, testing in 10% Clear Ballistics with 1/4" Medium Density Fiberboard 2" into the block and doing a 25 yard accuracy test. As mentioned, here is the full test: • .22 LR - Federal Punch...

I think people don't Trust it vs. respect it, because of it inconsistencies as far as ignition and reliability. If it were a center-fire cartridge and was more reliable, more people would Trust it and then comes the respect. Of course no one wants to be shot with a 22. The problem is, is the damn thing going to go off when it needs to or is it going to be loaded consistent, even in this demonstration velocities were all over the place.

Roger that ! I was raised on a farm in the 70's. We used 22 LR and shorts when butchering hogs and cow's. I dropped every hog with one shot except 1- and he only took 2. Mom ran off a would be home invader 1 night with 1 22 round fired through our back door. I've still got the rifle, a Marlin lever action. Mom and dad have always used a 22. Revolver for their house gun ( and dad a 12 gauge shotgun too). Dad's gone now. I've got his Ruger Single Six. Mom still has an H&R 22 I gave to her years ago. My wife uses a 22 H&R and a Glock 9mm. I have several 22's loaded around the house. Just carried a 22 mag yesterday out fishing. Nothing wrong with a 22. For some people, for various reasons, a 22 is the best caliber for them.

Absolutely! President Reagan was shot multiple times with a .22 and most people don't realize this but it was "touch-and-go" for him, the doctors almost lost him. Don't underestimate the .22, or any firearm for that matter. And for defensive purposes the best firearm is whatever you can hit cosistantly with, even if it's a .22. A 9mm's no good if you can't hit the target. Hey, even an atomic bomb is wasted energy if you miss the target!

☝️This is 100% correct. Out of a short barrel, there is not much difference between Velocitors and Mini-Mags. I have been waiting for you to do this one .. This is good .. For a number of years i have carried the CCI Stinger from around the mid 70's i remember .. The past 12-14 years i have switched over to CCI Velocitor which produces a much tighter group and my POI doesn't change by 2" like the Stingers do .. Water jugs , wet pulp bundles , baffle board box .. The Velocitor is ahead of the game .. Self protection Yes why would a person not carry a round like that ? The Federal Punch i still cannot find anywhere so far but i will beyond any doubt buy a few boxes of it when i find it , to me and with 56 years of shooting sports /hunting / personal carry with mainly the .357 mag as my choice for personal carry the Federal Punch could very well be a better option to carry ..As always a good video of valuable information ..well done ..

Punch looks to have outdone Stingers in consistent velocity from round to round, actually getting published velocity (or better), functioning consistently between a rifle and a pistol. 3gr less mass is rather insignificant, but it seems the bullet shape and powder Federal is using here is much more worthwhile than CCI Stinger when it comes to penetrating, getting consistent velocity.

One thing that has bothered me about Federal .22 rounds that I use in both my revolver and my pistols is that although the ammunition seems to work fine at the range, the crimp is often loose on the bullet. Remington Golden Bullets are notorious for this with the bullet often able to turn 360 degrees in its casing. I believe that is related to how often those rounds fail to fire, even with a good pin strike. But with various brands of Federal ammunition, I often see loose bullets that can wiggle back and forth a little bit in their casings when gently twisted. For me, that rules those Federal rounds out as a reliable self defense round since they are obviously not sealed enough to keep out water or moisture when used for pocket-carry. | For example, in my most reliable Federal Auto Match, I find about one in three bullets will move just a little because of a loose crimp. But it is similar with their other brands. With the Remington Golden bullets, it's just about all of them that are loose. With the CCI Mini-Mags, it's none of them. I load my handguns with Mini-Mags unless I'm just target shooting. So with this Punch looking so promising for use in a revolver, the question is, "Have you looked at how snug their bullets are in those Punch casings?". If so, what did you find? I might want to try some if they are tight. Thanks!

I first used the Stinger a year after it came out. Back in the mid 70's I've camped in the Black Hills with friends while stationed at Ellsworth AFB. I had a Winchester 190 that I often brought along for extra meat at times, usually rabbit. Once, on a riverbank, I tested the Stinger against the MiniMag. I shot twice into the packed mud there, almost clayish. First was the MiniMag. That round put a 2" diameter hole deep into the mud. Then came the Stinger. That round only went about 2" into the mud, but that was around 6" in diameter. That clay-like mud flew everywhere getting mud on me, my rifle, a friend that was with me and also my rifle. I understand how the ballistics gel is used to simulate flesh but that mud gave me a lasting impression of the Stinger's potential. My point with the packed mud was that I thought the moisture content in the mud helped to mimic the effects of the Stinger on flesh w/blood a touch more than with the gel, IMO. I no longer own the 190 but I do have a Ruger 10/22 and it's available as one of our home defense arms. It's been my opinion that getting hit with the Stinger would be most likely be non-lethal but the wound would cause such excruciating pain that it would stop an assailant/intruder in their tracks. For that reason I trained my wife to go for the Ruder first, if possible. No kids so there is a round in the chamber but on safe. She learned well to simply push the safety and pull the trigger. Her training mantra is, "Push, pull, pull, pull and keep pulling until he's down and writhing." Back to the ballistics gel for a moment. I think it has it's merits but I believe that mud, with it's moisture like flesh, gave me more information than the gel in a home defense situation. As a side note, back in South Dakota, we often went shining rabbit outside the Bad Lands. Once we stopped where there was a doe on the side of the road. From the backseat I got out and rested the 190 across the roof of the car, steadied and took three shots, head shots. No rabbit that night but we all shared in the venison.

The CCI Velocitors might work similarly to the Federal Punch. It is a hollow point with a flatter nose designed for small game. It weighs in at 40 grains and a listed velocity of 1435 feet per second in a rifle. Also 22 long rifle rounds do tend to produce their highest velocity in 18 1/2 inch barrels. At this barrel length the powder charge is fully consumed and as barrel length increases beyond this pressure drops and the bullet begins to decelerate which would explain why your velocity with the stingers came up short.

My ex-wife was "limited" to .22 pistols as, due to a car crash her shooting forearm was held together by a plate and screws. But she was DARN accurate with her Beretta 21, PPK/s, or my Walther P22. Back then, we loaded hers with CCI Mini-Mag solids as that is what fed most reliably and I don't think we ever had a FTF. Anyway, I don't tote a .22 much anymore BUT, I DO have several .22s so I think I need to find me a supply of this Punch ammo and lay in a stock of it for when I ever do! With that kind of performance, it might even be a better general purpose woods gun for around here than any other .22 loading (feral dogs, wild pigs, and the occasional two-legged snake ;) ) but all in a package that is easy to tote and serves well for the usual targets of small game and venomous snakes (the no-legged kind). My only concern is over penetration by the Federal Punch. If you're having to repel an attack in your home and you happen to live in a condo or an apartment situation my concern is that the Federal Punch would easily penetrate walls and possibly do damage in adjacent apartments. Stingers will keep the damage "local". Remember too that shot placement is as crucial as number of shots hitting the target.

The best 22lr round for defense is the CCi velocitor IMO. Neither the punch nor the stinger are really as good as the velocitor since while fast, they are also very light. Velocity is important, but without enough mass, it loses that velocity way too quickly. The Velocitor is full weight 40 grain, one of the fastest in its weight class, and made by CCi which has better reliability compared to other similar loadings like the Aquila interceptor. (Or whatever their full power 40 grain loading is called.) If you want to test the Velocitors and can't find any, I can send you a box. Let me know.

Marlin 39A , Ruger bull barrel and the S&W K-22. Until CCI came out with the Stinger often they would escape into their holes. As soon as I began to use the Stinger- none escaped anymore. California still offers 10 cents per tail for each of these, which pays for all the ammo plus lunch on those hunts. The hours and years I’ve spent shooting these have given not only me but Uncles kids and friends hours of enjoyment and practically teaches hunting skills for big game. Then I would do it with basic 40 gr .22 LR and was surprised that half the time they ran off. I think for small animals, even 40 gr is too much momentum, passing through a creature without dumping much damage.

I like the mdf twist. There are so many simple gel tests to watch, that any addition of other materials that mimic bone or other hard substances, is nice to see. I disagree though, that the stinger is bad out of the rifle. I think the penetration with the over .41" expansion is excellent.

Always thought it was crazy that 22lr hollow points are more deadly from a handgun than a rifle... because when fired from a rifle they expand from velocity, but don't penetrate nearly enough... but when fired from a handgun they don't expand at all (usually), so they penetrate much deeper (usually 12" or more). Ever since hearing about that a few years ago (and seeing it happen in tests many time), it really started to bother me that most of the good, hotter 22lr ammo (like one's for self defense) are hollow point. When it comes to 22lr, the only thing you have is penetration, so why would they make them expand and not penetrate deep enough? (A good example is CCI Stingers. When fired from a rifle they suck).
@GunSam
@GunSam 3 жыл бұрын
I think the best option would be the right lead alloy that maybe expands 25% from a handgun, so from .222" to like .27-.28 caliber while retaining 12" minimum penetration. I think something in the 35 grain range could achieve this if an ammo company took the time to design it.

Because the .22 hollow points are originally not designed for self defense. They are developed for pest control and varmint hunting - and there you need the devastating effect of a mushroomed hollow point on small critters!

Cynically ? Generic 40gr RN HV will do anything reasonably expected from a .22lr handgun for defensive purposes . Likewise generic 36gr HP from a rifle gives very good balance of some expansion with 14- 16 inch penetration from rifles . But hollow point bullets and pretty mushrooms look sexy in advertising , and their is market demand for " premium " ammo , and their just filling consumer demand .
@filianablanxart8305
@filianablanxart8305 3 жыл бұрын
I've got to give a partial update to my above comment . In light of Gun Sam's most recent video with Blazer 40gr RN out of the same short bbl pistol , the Federal Punch did indeed penetrate about 2in more than that particular brand of generic RN , to give credit where due . Is that meaningful ? Maybe. Will that difference be consistent with other brands of RN or different bbl lengths ? Dunno Does that raise Punch sufficiently to be a semi serious round , on par with say the various .32's or generic .22lr from rifle? No. But Federal may now legitimately claim bragging rights for this subcategory .

Are you rifle hunting medium sized varmints , or small game where meat damage isn't an issue ? It's great stuff . Do you consider Expansion from a handgun the Most Important factor , to the exclusion of penetration , then look no further than Stingers .
