Arteta has every right as a manager of ARSENAL to not back up the LIVERPOOL controversy bc 1) why would he want to get on the PGMOL's bad side? 2) he def has people who advise him not to mention certain things 3) his job isn't to protect Liverpool. The fact that foul on gabriel wasnt even looked at is ridiculous, the fact that bruno wasnt given a straight red is riduclous, almost every decision made in that game was questionable. Even if you give the referees the benefit of the doubt that they can't ascertain the ball being fully out due to not having a camera angle, and again for offside decision since they don't have a proper angle to draw the lines, how in your right mind can you see Gabriel being pushed with both hands by Joelinton and say that's not an error by the on field ref and let the goal stand? You have all the angles in the world for that, slow mo, regular speed, everything. You see that and don't intervene? At the very least, ask the ref to come to the monitor to see for himself. And god forbid, you say anything about how you feel about the refs as a manager. It's why you get "if I speak I'm in big trouble" responses from managers most of the time, because they'll get fined or sanctioned for speaking about their experience of the game. I'm with Arteta and glad that he spoke up.

It wasn't over the top. I respect him even more because I could tell he had more to say but he held himself back. The biggest issue Arteta has is the accumulation of these decisions going against Arsenal going way back in his time at Arsenal. Another huge issue with VAR is that the ref is unsure so leaves it to VAR who then also doesn't make a decision because they are unsure. They are paid to make calls not avoid them. Would also add they have put more pressure on themselves by rejecting the automated offsides.

As a Newcastle fan, the ball was out. I thought the goal would be disallowed the whole time and we would’ve drawn 0-0. Damn shame but at the end of the day, I’m happy with the way we played against one of the best teams in the Premier League.

I think its ridiculous that 5mm of the ball could be on the white line and it still counts as in play. If more than half of the ball is outside of the lines it should be out of play. You can alternatively look whether the surface of the ball touching the field is within the lines. Anything better than this

With regards to whether or not the ball was on thr the pitch or not, I don't understand why they don't just use the bottom of the ball as the measurement. Like if the bottom of the ball (i.e. the part of the ball that's actually touching the same surface as the white lines) is out, that should be out. None of this edge of the ball being in bullshit.

A big problem is that by law, refs are told to allow decisions that they arre unsure of to play on because they can be checked by VAR. But we're being told that because VAR isn't sure they can't cancel it. VAR is meant to help out decisions they're unsure of to say it can't be chalked off cause of that is bs

Why not just change the out of play rule to the base of ball has to be touching the white line. This would be a lot easier to visualise as theres less room for interpretation.

It boils down to two marginal red cards and a marginal foul that were not awarded, but could have been, subjectively, by a different referee. After the excellent analysis on many TV channels, I don't think anyone can really still be upset about the touchline call and the offside. You always feel hard done by when you don't get the marginal calls (and Arteta did get one of them: Havertz wasn't sent off). But no team has a God-given right to expect those. They generally favour the home team and managers should be conditioned to this. Marginal calls (where different unbiased observers, including professional players and referees have different opinions which break not too far off a 50-50 split) are a completely different category from clear and obvious errors, where just about everyone thinks the decision was wrong - I'd put the Wolves foul for the Sheff Utd pen in that category, and obviously the disallowed Dias goal from the other week. Klopp and O'Neil were both astounded at the decisions but kept their composure in interviews and the press conferences. They didn't have to put on a show because the facts were on their side, public sympathy was always going to be on their side. To make Arsenal appear like innocent victims, rather than toothless losers, Arteta had to really drive home the point. Hence his little performance. It hasn't worked in terms of getting sympathy but he's certainly made it the weekend's big talking point, and it's deflected from Arsenal's inability to get anywhere near Newcastle's goal. He probably was genuinely angry, but not at VAR who put together a masterclass in following the correct process and reaching the right objective decisions. More at himself and his misfiring team.

i just feel like they should update the rule of out of bounds so that if the ball is completely touching the grass on the outside of the white line, it is out. football is the only sport in which the outside of the white line is the determining factor. basketball, tennis, american football, volleyball, etc. all do it the other way. this is an issue that continually arises again and again every season, in tournaments, league play, cups, in every country. if the ball's contact to the ground is completely out of bounds then surely that should just mean that the ball is out of bounds instead of this arbitrary, hard to define, hard to navigate gray area of "oh maybe from this angle 2cm of the ball is still technically inside what could be viewed as being in bounds". i love football but it is undoubtedly the most gray-area rulebook of any sport. too many things in the sport rely on a wholly undefinable, non-exact set of rules that can easily be shifted one way or the other giving referees the opportunity to be consistently inconsistent. TLDR: fix the rulebook
