Every day, billions of sharp, invisible fibers are making their way out to our oceans and air, and into our water, wine, beer, and cells.

How much plastic is your washing machine sending out to sea?
www.vox.com/the-goods/2018/9/...
"It’s no secret that too many of the plastic products we use end up in the ocean. But you might not be aware of one major source of that pollution: our clothes.
Polyester, nylon, acrylic, and other synthetic fibers - all of which are forms of plastic - are now about 60 percent of the material that makes up our clothes worldwide. Synthetic plastic fibers are cheap and extremely versatile, providing for stretch and breathability in athleisure, and warmth and sturdiness in winter clothes."
Will clothes companies do the right thing to reduce microfiber pollution?
www.theguardian.com/sustainab...
"Over the past few years, evidence has been mounting that synthetic textiles such as polyester and acrylic, which make up much of our clothing, are a major source of pollution in the world’s oceans. That’s because washing those clothes causes tiny plastic fibers to shed and travel through wastewater treatment plants into public waterways. These microfibers are sometimes inadvertently gobbled up by aquatic organisms, including the fish that end up on our plate."
15 Ways to Stop Microfiber Pollution Now
www.plasticpollutioncoalition...
"Think about all your clothing made of acrylic, nylon, and polyester. Yes, that means fleece, trousers, blouses, socks, and even your beloved yoga pants. Did you know? Every time you wash these synthetic fabrics, millions of microfibers are released into the water. Microfibers are too small to be filtered out by waste treatment plants, so they end up in our waterways and oceans, where they wreak havoc on marine animals and the environment.
Plastic fibers are now showing up in fish and shellfish sold in in California and Indonesia for human consumption. And one paper showed that microfibers are responsible for 85 percent of shoreline pollution across the globe. How can we stop this pollution?"

The issue is strictly with plastic microfiber. Anything organic breaks down, including clothing. So try to buy less but higher quality natural clothes and sea-life will thank you. Also you won't sweat as much and humans will be happy too.

That was an incredibly irresponsible cboice for the washing machine companies to make. They could have instead made it easy to change, with a disclaimer about environmental necessity of it, and leave the customer to be irresponsible instead.

I'd think the technology exists to deal with it (cyclonic separation seems obvious enough), but it's up to manufacturers to implement it. Might be something like patent encumbrance or who knows what keeping them from pursuing it though.

Will Pack I have to say I don't know much about politics in the USA, but in europe it's pretty clear that money is the key factor. Germany made promises to reduce co2 emissions by much (don't know how much exactly, but they failed to do anything in the right direction since the paris agreement in 2016). Now they were planning to destroy a forest for COAL!..... I'm pretty sure that if nothing changes in the way politics work, money will be the most important factor for them. In my opinion politicians will change, but the important thing is: when?

Most filters may not catch particles that small anyways. They could probably add a centrifugal separator to laundry machines to help trap smaller particles during the rinse and drain cycles, and then there'd be a drum canister you'd have to empty. And that would be less prone to clogging than a usual filter as well. More or less it works like dust separation does on bagless vacuum cleaners, so it's not like a completely unknown technology.

Water, on the other hand, hadn’t been inspected for microfibers yet.

This implies there should be a better processing of water, not that people stop using synthetic, and/or stop washing clothes tho

I wonder if this is related to Morgellons disease which is known as the fiber disease.

So we should have a filter in our water treatment centers and the microfibers will absorb all the contaminants we've put into the ocean as long as we pull them out of our water supply at the center. Although I don't know the hidden upside of animals having microfibers. Need something to help them out.

Ok . This raises a question ? Actually several. If by some politcal n economic miracle we manage to get rid of fabrics shedding the micro fibers. So done no more introduced into the world and us . I will toss in micro plastics into the question since both are present in our water sources. Ect. Will the existing stuff ever go away ?
