How have I never made the connection that "geometry" comes from "earth measurement"? Thank you. It's like 2015 all over again when it dawned on me that "alphabet" comes from "alpha betas", as in ABCs.

Highschool classes and textbooks should really use more real world examples. I loved algebra but I still struggle a bit with figuring out what formula to use to find an answer and tbh I think it'd be more engaging if it was about real situations we might face and not just so and so sharing apples or taking a train

If you take an economics class or play a video game all those applications are apparent. Also I wish more people had interest in stuff that's theoretical. It's like playing a board game or video game. Fun even though it's not applicable to "real" life.

please read "Debt: The First 5,000 Years" for more info about how people exchanged goods & services throughout history. People paying each other with *cash-like* form of money is a bit misleading narrative. Up until very recently in history, cash was almost non-existent in exchange. most societies exchanged only by debt and relied on a person's reputation in society. wasn't an instant payment. You helped someone in return of their potential help in the future, or just out of your own generosity. it wasn't very robotic and mathematical like you described it, at least not for the vast majority of people. Coins and tokens since their conception were exclusively used to serve armies. not regular people. huge distinction between these two.

Not sure I agree with this. There are many mathematical frameworks that we have developed and we use the ones that are useful to us in a given situation. However, you can view all frameworks as just an expression of a single underlying truth. So you can say we invented several useful expressions for this underlying truth :) hope this helps

The decision to trade a pig for 15 chickens will have assumptions that, in some way, are mathematical; considerations of the food and rest one needs to labour the hours with the animals, the time it takes for their output, etc. Math and logic rely on each other, but don't mistake them for the same thing.

Cool topic, but I think this is a bit misleading. I would argue none of the examples provided are "money" (at least until we hit the Golden Age of Islam or the later Renaissance). Pre-historic tally sticks where used to count anything really (such as time). We don't know what the Ishango bone was used for, it could be anything from time, moon phases - so saying it was to "keep track of possessions" is an educated guess. Pythagoras thought maths could help him solve philosophical conundrums, ethics and mysticism. Coins where around for a long time but weren't used in markets or exchange aside from armies and for exchanging with foreigners, most people used debt and cultural communal practices to share and exchange. I think it's fair to say that "counting things" led to "math", but not "money".
