Today it has become rather easy to estimate the value of the coin. In this video I explain the method I use to get an accurate estimate of a coin's value. It has not failed me yet!

Another well made video worth watching, it kept my attention, even though I have little interest in the South African decimal series. The reason for this is I mainly collect pre decimal coins that I would have spent in my youth. And whilst I rarely saw a South African coin, The Union series were very similar in size and denomination to the UK & Eire series. You would still find the odd Victoria and Edward pennies in you change right up to 1971, and even the odd 1/13th of a shilling Jersey penny. I do like the way you show the silver bullion value, weight of pure silver, and that is the minimum a coin should be valued at. I spent UK £.s. d. and the Eire series of £. s. d. and then the decimal series. Now I'm in the €uro zone. In 1920 due to the increased cost of silver, the UK debased it's coinage, from .925 to .50 silver, even so during WW2 a lot of silver was used in electrical circuitry due to the need for copper to be used for shells etc. In 1947 the use of silver in UK coins ceased and cupro-nickel was used. The silver was needed to repay the US lend /lease debt. The first independent Irish coinage was minted by the Royal mint in 1928 to the same size and weight as the UK issue (bar the 6d & 3d which were made of nickel) However to give confidence to the new Irish currency, the issue from 1918 to 1950 was in 0.75 silver 0.25 copper and from 1950 in cupro-nickel. A very cleaver devise was put on the paper money, say a £1 pound note would have '1 pound sterling payable on demand in London' , written on it. This prevented any run on the Banks as to exchange any sizable amount of Irish notes for UK notes, as you would have to go in person to the London office of the 'Consolidated Currency Commission' to do the exchange there. An arduous journey before cheap air flights. I'm surprised South Africa stayed with silver until 1977, I don't know why, and a wild guess, is that you stayed with the Gold and Silver standard longer to give confidence in the currency? I'd like to get your take on this?

Peter. Thank you so much for your reply. I am glad you enjoyed the video - I am still learning as this is still all to new for me, but I'm trying hard not to make them boring. Nothing as bad as badly edited, boring video. I find the the facts you give also so very interesting. I found the "clever" devise in the UK pound note particularly interesting to deter exchanging of UK coinage for Irish. I never realised that silver ceased to be used as early as 1947 in UK coins! Yes, the last circulating silver coin was the 1976 R1 coin. It has an odd history (which I would like to cover in a video at some point) During that time a paper R1 was circulating in addition to the silver R1. Go figure... I still have to research why both currencies was in use, but rumour has it that the silver coin was never intended to be used in commerce (even though it was a non-proof) and thousands were minted. Nevertheless, it was in use and well circulated specimens are "common". We left the gold standard in 1932, so I don't think that had much to do with it. I could be wrong through. It does explain the blackened farthings up to 1942, which is another interesting piece of history. :-) Anyway, thank you again and happy collecting!

No, definitely not. Some are very valuable. For example, the 1931 half penny with "Suid" is very rare and valuable. What coin do you have?

*sigh* I get asked this questions so often... Your comment has prompted me to make a video on this topic. Keep an eye out, I will release it in the next week or so. To answer your question: it depends, but boils down to the following: (1) Know what your coin is worth. Do your homework. (2) Depending on the value, either sell at a dealer or on online auction sites (Bid or Buy) or Facebook groups. Just be very careful for scammers. For many high value coins the demand and supply are very low and you have to be patient. Good luck.

These are the 2nd decimal coins. The key denomination/date here is the 1c, 1965. The Afr is worth anything from R3000 to even R10000 (if in top condition). The English around R300 to R1500. All the others are worth bullion (very slightly more than face value).

@@emileburger1804 You can't sell on KZfaq as far as I know. Facebook groups dedicated to coins will give you an estimate on its value. In my experience, you'll get a fair price there. Personally I sell on FB and Bid or Buy. Never been scammed.

Hi Bob I was on a few Facebook groups of old coins and there are mostly con-men that's "offering" extreme amounts. I don't trust any of those so called "buyers on Facebook.

I assume you're referring to the one rand coin, not the Kruger rand. Two different beasts. :-) They are simply wrong. Key date here is the 1965 Afr R1. Worth about R15k, possibly more. All rands from 1965 to 1976 are 80% silver. They are worth at least R120 in silver (dependent on silver price). In a better condition they are definitely worth more. From 1977 the circulation coins were made of nickel. They are worth a bit more than face value. Around R2. In tip top condition, maybe R30. Rather sell on Facebook or Bid or Buy. A coin shop should give you at least 50% of these values. You get something and they make a profit.
