The old South African R1 coin was initially struck in 80% silver from 1965 until 1967. It was a large coin, 32.7mm in diameter and at the time it was minted it had substantial buying power!
In 1977 the coin was struck in Nickel and remained the staple coin in the South African economy until 1990. Today, the legend lives on in commemorative silver R1 coins that features key points in the South African history. These coins are highly collectable, yet very affordable. These are minuted in 92.5% silver and in my opinion, often a better investment than modern silver coins which comes at a premium.
A few interesting nuances exists which we'll explore in this video. One is the existence of Nickel proofs from 1977 until 1983 even though no official record exists. These should be quite valuable!
