If a person was wondering what to expect as far as expenses. This spread sheet would be a wonderful tool for them to look at. Using it to judge what they would need. You have covered something that no one else has done except for guessing at what they thought it cost. The spread sheet takes the romance out of a trip and brings the harsh light of reality into it. You have documented the reality of a thru hike.

Definitely add maybe 3% for inflation. Also, if you drink at all add that in. I know some people did it for far less this year by utilizing trail angels as much as they could but it never hurts to have a little extra when you finish. It will definitely relieve the stress at that point.

Cool video of breakdown of mileage, costs and incidentals! 👍🏻 I am a finance geek and a thrifty endurance athlete, thus my "trail name." Regardless of how you prepare, you will always have incidentals and expense on things you never planned. It comes with the "territory" of what we do -- living life in the great outdoors. One at a time beginning with the first. The journey continues except now you're in a truck. Paying nightly for a place to stay in 1 month increments. The costs part is at 9:23 if you want to skip over the other stuff. For finances this didn't include the 8 boxes I had shipped to me from home since I bought that food over periods of several months all scattered over and didn't track it back then. This also did not include my cell phone bill which I counted as part of back home expenses.

Very cool breakdown. Don’t think I’ve seen anyone do something so in depth before. I was planning on carrying a composition book to journal and record where I camp and at what mile but I didn’t even think about anything this in depth. I think I’ll keep track of showers and washing clothes now too. The video was super interesting and I was surprised how much of food was eating out but I guess it makes sense. On the JMT I think food cost be about 300$ but we only ate out at Reds Meadow and then we also ate at McDonalds when we got off in Lone Pine to pick up our package. I also know that we didn’t do any showers or clothes washing off trail. We swam in a few lakes and we did laundry in a gallon bag and that just consisted of putting water and shaking (no soap) then dumping water out and repeating this. Shipping did costs a bit more though. The five gallon bucket at MTR was 80$ for 25 pounds...which sucked but ya. Then there were our boxes but my friend and I split all of the shipping cost and space in the bucket
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, almost each time we ate out it came to about $20, even at McDonald's! We would eat a biggy size meal plus additional food so that hiker hunger really costs you. The postage surprised me as well but I guess it makes sense. I did a lot of clothes rinsing in creeks and lakes as well but each time I had a chance to do laundry I still did to get the oils out as well. I didn't think I did laundry so often though but I guess so.

I'm still working on making a gear video. The Arc Haul wore out at a couple of places to the point I didn't think it would make it another week so I wrote ZPacks with photos and they sent me a new one. During that time though I was home so I just grabbed my ULA Catalyst, which I already owned and used. The ULA worked out well for the rest of the trip but I love packs with that gap in the back like the Arc Haul or Ospreys for the hotter climates. FYI, I believe the year I bought the Arc Haul they had a design flaw which noticed wound up breaking on several other hikers. I saw packs bought in early 2018 had a different design on the bottom and the one they sent me had the new design as well.

Thanks for the recap. I do think you should add in the expense of the food purchased prior to the trip and mailed out, since it was consumed on the trail. Did your gear cost include buying all of your gear for this trip, or did you already own most things, so those costs were not included? I would like to hear more about your road trips, and how your prepared your vehicle. I am planning to travel cross-country in my little Ford Escort Wagon, so that I can do some bits of the AT this spring. I am taking the car so I can carry my kayaks and bicycle, so it will be my living space when I am in towns and inclement weather. Can't afford the hotel/motel thing, and I prefer to stay in my "own home" in my "own bed", be it car or tent.
@JayWandersOut

I already had all my gear so it was gear spent on trail. A lit of the gear I actually had for other backpacking trips. You're right about the food. I bought a lot of it on sale years back so I didn't know the cost but I could have estimated somehow. Perhaps on future hikes I'll keep better track. It's day 15 in my SUV now and so far so good. It's tight to be sure but I have everything I need and a lot I don't think I need so I should be able to me more room. It's kind of fun so far and definitely freeing. I just wish it would stop being so windy so I can cook more! I have a ton of video on the build so I have to edit that together and will do a tour. I just wanted to figure stuff out first but I think I have a groove going. Pilot truck stops have been great fallbacks to stay a night on the really short days.

Appreciate the vids! One thing I think I'm confused on...you mention you only spent around 680 dollars on gear🤔 I'm assuming you aren't counting things you may have already had for other trips? Or is this just what you spent on gear while on trail? Having seen your other videos , I know your bear canister, puffy, and clothes alone would add up to probably more than that. I guess I'm just looking for clarification on what that number represents. I've been trying to get various estimates and that is by far the lowest I've seen. If you were to add up all the gear you took with you to the pct (even if it wasn't bought specifically for that trip, what would the gear cost be?
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 5 жыл бұрын
680 was replacement gear like water filter, extra padding for backpack, new waist belt, insoles, stuff like that. The total cost of all gear would probably be several thousand. Duplex is $630, backpacks used come to probably $580, sleeping pads $400, quilt $300. Electronics alone would be over $2000 due to the cameras and all the memory cards. It wasn't a cheap trip but most of the gear is still useful now.

Jay, this looks GREAT. I'm really looking forward to watching the video (other stuff going on right now), likely later tonight. I didn't see elevation gain / loss for each day though. I'm also a bit of a data nerd. Did you do any calculations of steps & mileage? I'm always interested in what my "average" step length is. What I'd wonder is what the correlation is between step length and elevation gain / loss. I'd "expect" shorter average steps going uphill, longer steps on slight downhill and shorter steps on steep downhill! Also, do you know if the PCT mileage is height adjusted (adds in elevation ups and downs as part of total distance) or is the distance only horizontal distance? After all, a day with a 5,280 foot gain would add a mile to your distance and is what one "really" walks. However, to do this one would have to capture all ups and downs - likely need a good GPS watch (oops, more equipment to charge up every night).
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 5 жыл бұрын
I believe it is not height adjusted. I didn't have access to total elevation changes each day so I couldn't reliably include it. I know my GPS app could've recorded it but it would have killed my phone battery and I didn't bring a GPS watch either. A floor is 10 feet so theoretically it could be 10x floors for the feet but I think the FitBit counted more floors than I actually hiked.. not sure.
@donmartin9567
@donmartin9567 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks @@JayWandersOut. I didn't think that the distance would be heigh adjusted but was curious. I have a Garmin 935 which will fully track all sorts of stuff include up and down BUT I'd have to charge it every night. Plan was to just pick up the steps & HR from it as it has optical HR. I may see what battery life is like if I record less frequently. In any case, I really enjoyed your videos of your hike along with these data points.

There were some things I wish the app did but overall I thought it did enough and figured if it had even more features it would have taken me even longer to edit them. One thing I noticed is if a group of hikers show up somewhere with wifi immediately the speeds drop because everybody's backing their data up. Be prepared for long waits and keep in mind data will upload quicker when less hikers are around or after hikers have been around a while. Post hike is doing all right. I'd like to get on the road and start exploring again but I'm just delaying it. Thru hikes are so nice because once you start you pretty much know what you're doing every day. I do miss that simplicity. I've been following your channel since before I started! I loved how much experience you had with the southern sections so I paid attention and appreciated your water status reports. My plan now is to be out there and do a lot of the side trails and peaks and redo sections I loved or had bad weather during. Have fun on your thru hike!

Hey Jay thank you for the fast reply. Thank you for the tip on uploading speeds being dependent on how many people are using the WiFi, I appreciate that. Did you back up all your stuff on anything like an exterior hard drive or? Wow didn’t know you watched my videos in the past. I started truly to figure out how to edit with iMovie so I felt I knew what I was doing before I eventually thru hiked because I knew like you, I wanted to record my adventure. It morphed into deciding that many people that don’t live here near the desert part of the trail and especially foreigners tend to have some fear of it especially the water. Just like you I mostly enjoy showing the trail, it’s views and conditions, but then I decided I might as well help future thru hikers that are worried know more about the first few hundred miles to hopefully ease their minds. I’m really glad you watched some of my past videos and I hoped they did help a little. So did you have a few favorite areas of the entire trail?
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 5 жыл бұрын
It was all great! So many people complained about the desert but I absolutely loved it. Joshua trees are so dang cool! Even in the worst places there are huge spikes of amazing views or unique experiences. I'd like to go through the sierra when there's less snow for a different vantage point but I enjoyed it all... except hiking on the left side of mountains all the time in NorCal. I was thinking I need to go SOBO to test my theory to see if my left shoe gets worn out quicker. I wish I saw more wildlife but other than that I liked it all.

I love all the stats! I was wondering, how did you keep track of PCT miles and non-PCT miles hiked per day? Did you just use your Fitbit for mileage tracking? Guthook? Another app? I'm so curious how to track stats!
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 5 жыл бұрын
I wrote down what mile slept ar each night and just counted PCT miles from that unless I backtracked or something. On Android with Guthooks you can click on alternate trails, blue lines, and it will show you miles so you can count how far that is. Fire detours also say how long it is and often give milage per segment of a detour. Lots of writing down each day to keep track.

@JayWandersOut

ULA backpacks come with two shock cord loops per shoulder strap for holding water bottles. They work quite well. ZPacks sells loops but they are way too weak for anything more than 16oz. On my Arc Haul I just bought thicker shock cord and made my own and attached them.

Jay, You used both the ULA pack and the Arc Haul on the PCT, starting over which one would you recommend ?
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 5 жыл бұрын
Hmm.. a lot of people had good luck with the Circuit. The Arc Haul was just not durable enough to trust for me anyway. If you can thru hike in 5 months and make it a routine to check over your pack to adjust wear and tear before it becomes a problem the Arc Haul would be good. Also the newer model addressed some of the major downfalls of mine so it could work out well. The Arc Haul is just so much lighter than the Catalyst but when you feel the two together you can really feel the durability difference in the fabric and straps.

Hey! I heard you mention waterproof socks? What was your take on them? Did they help in Washington? Were they worth the investment? I was thinking of getting a pair for my attempt next year. Thanks!
@JayWandersOut
@JayWandersOut 5 жыл бұрын
If you'll be walking in fresh snow where it could soak your feet it's fantastic. It truly was waterproof and with no seams there were no hotspots. I did wear Injinji liners just be safe though. There were a lot of times when I was happy to have them. If creek crossings are below a foot or so it's easy to walk right through and keep your feet dry, although you'll feel the cold from water soaking the exterior. My take is at least the skin is protected from getting water logged and becoming softer. The problem is the exterior gets wet so you'll have to dry them out over night otherwise it will freeze. A couple of times by the time I got to camp they were just soggy, not dripping wet, so I actually went to bed in them knowing my feet would dry them out but I also have hot feet. It worked out and my quilt was still fine. They are nice at times but there's a lot to work out using them on a longer trip. Mostly in the sierra I did not wear them because once you hit a water crossing over a foot high water will get inside the sock making them pointless and take a LONG time to dry. I sent them home in Bridgeport. Some people did the bread bag thing but I didn't want my socks smelling like bread. I'm torn but probably wouldn't bring them if I did it again. It was good to test them out though.

@@JayWandersOut Excellent info. I have been trying to find first hand experience from an actual thru-hiker and have not found anything till now. What you said makes total sense, and was curious if it still had any waterproofing properties in deeper water. I guess it makes sense why more people weren't raving about them in the Sierra. Thank you very much!

I usually put it inside a Mountain House bag or a beef jerky bag of if not that inside a bar wrapper bag inside a separate ziploc bag then put them all in my main garbage ziploc bag. I thought it worked out well enough although MH bags sometimes rip at the seal part. Beef jerky bags though are always great. Sturdy and reliable bags.

If you were not editing videos in hotels, how much would you have cut down staying in them? On one hand, hotels are nice to recharge electronics, meet fellow hikers, do laundry, organize food and rest. On the other hand, they cost quite a bit.

Yes, it's very nice not having to struggle with 20 other devices charging on a few outlets. There are definitely pros and cons but it is one category where a hiker has more control over their full budget. Food and gear are hard to avoid but making plans to stay with trail angels or sharing hotels with more people will definitely save money.
