After lallygagging in Utah to avoid the cold, we’re traveling over 500 miles as we make our way north towards Alaska. And since we hear grocery prices are a tad more expensive up there, we spend triple our normal budget to stock up on our favorite supplies.
But make sure you watch until the very end, because after our massive grocery shopping trip, we arrive home to find quite the surprise.

Hey there! We're Joe + Kalyn!
As online entrepreneurs, we thought, "why not work from home... on the road"? So in 2019, we bought and renovated a 2005 Jayco Designer Fifth Wheel, which took us to every state in the lower 48. But the economy hit our business especially hard after the 'vid, spurring us to pivot in new directions and try different strategies, including various RV work camping jobs!

Guys, we have Costco and other grocery stores here in Alaska. You don't need to over stock. We travel back and forth and food in America is a little cheaper but not extraordinarily cheaper than Alaska. Make sure you don't overload your trailer. And make sure your bearings are in excellent shape. Springs can be an issue also.
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading Ай бұрын
Problem for us is we will most likely rarely be near big chain stores. We'll cross paths with them occasionally. Doing wheel maintenance in Canada. This thing is a beast that I think would surprise most RVers what she can handle. I'm hoping the suspension makes it through Alaska but time will tell. Only so much money and time for projects. -J

People.... if you shop Costco, Walmart... prices are pretty similar to lower 48. Next all that extra weight your going to carry now. Well your savings just evaporated because your going to spend more in fuel. I know I live in Alaska. Everyone thinks they will save on groceries but don't realize the extra expense in fuel.
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading Ай бұрын
@@croombsr My favorite part is the fact that I have people from Alaska telling me that I was smart and people from Alaska telling me I'm wasting money on gas. 😂 The internet is fun. Genuinely so. I'm not mad. 😂 I'm honestly not sure how much effect 300lbs or so is going to have on fuel. Weather will play more of a role than that. Side note - you have 9 walmarts in your beautiful state. 4 of them are in Anchorage and 1 more in Wasilla. We won't be close to them for 90% of our trip. This is the giant thing people are missing about this stockup when they are telling us the prices are the same. We aren't RVing to Anchorage.... we're RVing across a large portion of the state and will be rural 90% of the time. (Percentage made up but probably not far off). -J

@@OpenRoading the places you're going to in Alaska are on the road system, right? To go anywhere you'll be going through Fairbanks and Anchorage, so plenty of big box stores. I think what happened with Trinity this time is that you took Cody with you when you left, so she was scared you weren't coming back. Since she was abandoned before, she has fear of abandonment and a bit of separation anxiety. One thing that might help calm her when you are gone is a KONG Classic Stuffable Dog Toy. You can fill it with peanut butter (if you have any, ha ha) and it will keep her busy and occupied while you are gone, distracting her from her stress. I'm a new fan ~ just discovered you guys last week and love your personalities and charisma. I was sold when you adopted an abandoned dog! Again, Love the videos! I really like seeing the reality of RV travels/living. The more I learn from everyone the more I plan into our Dunesport RV build. We are having them put 100 gallon fresh/grey/black tanks that is reinforced for full transport, and 4400W of residential solar. Our current setup we were amazed that our 1200W of solar fully ran everything when we were out West, but Here in the South East 1200W does not cut it (mentioned that before but some commenters may not have seen that). We are upgrading our current RV to 2000W and switched to Residential 48v batteries and inverters for more efficient operation. I guess the last note is in regards to storage. We are building our new Dunesport to hold our jeep, giving it triple axle 8k running gear, which gives us the headroom for water and solar weight. Cant wait to see more on your adventures! I'm taking all the notes I can since we are about 5 years out from our Alaska trip.

Guys I hope you weighted your rig with all that stuff in it. The trip to Alaska and back is very hard on rigs based on my two trips over the years. Do not overload your 5th wheel or truck because some of the roads are very wash boarded or pot holed and other have huge swells in them when the road is paved. I took two spare 5th wheels and used both. Enjoy watching your channel on YT and going to Alaska as we are now retired and will be heading up there next year.

Very cool video. I've been following you guys for a couple months now. I am gate guarding with my girlfriend down in South Texas where you guys used to be but I'm originally from Idaho Falls so it was very cool to see you guys running about my hometown. Having grown up there I have camped many times up Fall Creek and all around Palisades. After we are done here in Texas in another 3 weeks or so we are heading back to Idaho to work as kayak guides on the Teton river for the summer. We're very excited about that one!! I appreciate your guys's videos. I like the energy you have on screen and the information you share. I'm a fan!!

They also took our eggs because they to weren't in the original packaging . They also nearly took all our potatoes but let us keep them when we were able to pull the bag out of the trash can to prove the were USA potatoes. I'm sure times have changes but I would find the official Canada website they will tell you whats aloud today . Thanks for the update on T Mobile because that's what we use and had only heard that they were going to charge more . Now we will keep it until they raise the rate . I lived in Alaska for 7 years. I lived in the interior in Tok the first town you encounter coming in on the AK highway for 4 years. Weather could be a lot warmer in summer than coastal areas. Also, because many roads were gravel covered, I got a windshield crack immediately. I replaced the windshield, but got another crack almost immediately from other vehicles kicking up gravel. I never replaced the windshield again until I moved back to the lower 48. A good thing for you: staying overnight on any road turnout on the AK highway was ok. If you are going to be in AK during the fall/winter you need to retrofit your engine to be able to plug it in to heat it. No building codes in Tok so I saw people living in RVs but put up walls of straw bales for insulation.

The rolling on the spot...was because something "marked" that spot. As a former Rottweiler breeder, I never let my dogs touch any ground near any vets office. If you think about it, only sick animals relieve themselves outside vets' offices, both before&after the visit. And dogs roll in stinky smells to make themselves smell like other animals...I'd guess a male dog relieved themselves on that spot. Wait till she encounters bear scat...haha

@@OpenRoading Maybe since Trinity was abandoned from those that she loved before you got her, she has some kind of PTSD type of anxiety about being separated forever from those that she has bonded with, and considers her family now. Especially when she just doesn’t understand what’s happening. She will get through the loss of Cody but I know with your loving and compassionate hearts you will find ways to help her through the initial stress of it all for her. If Cody ever passes in your home, it is a good thing to let Trinity be able to know with sight and smell, and in a way say goodbye. At least her grieving will be typically much shorter than yours. I am a new dog owner so I'm not upset at your view based on what you've seen here. I don't believe she has any major anxiety issues though - I truly do not. When she went through the screen door we were outside and she loves running outside. When she came out, she didn't immediately come to us even though we were in sight - she went running up the hill within sight of us...but not to us. We have worked with her off leash and she just loves to flat out RUN. I am 1000% sure that the screen door was her saying hey - Ya'll are enjoying the outside and I want to as well I'm gonna go for a run. When we leave the RV she is chill as a cucumber and when we get home she is equally chill. These napkins are the only thing she has ever tore up in our 6 months of caring for her and we've left her for longer than we did for this video. Today we left the RV for an extended period and she was on the couch when we left, and on the couch when we got back. No barking. No whining at departure or arrival (she did wag her tail excitedly when we came in the door). I could tell that at some point she moved to the bed because she likes to lay on our pillows. But nothing was moved out of place. You could be 100% right and I could be 100% wrong, Like I said - new dog owner here (but not unaccustomed to animals). But please understand I'm forming my opinion based on living with her 24/7 and you're basing it off of 2 minutes of video. And yes - she is beautiful and we're soo soo lucky to have her! -J

I didn't think groceries were all that more expensive in Alaska. What is more expensive (especially in Canada) is fuel. Weighing down your rig is going to cost you fuel mileage. We also struggled to find fresh water in AK. Many of the state parks had warning signs to boil water first. We did end up having to pay to fill up twice and bought gallon jugs from the store.

I hope you have a really safe trip. I recommend you not to take the cassiar highway. It can be beautiful, but it’s very dangerous at times at some of the rest stops. I also recommend not to travel camp along highway 16 “highway of tears” in British Columbia. Best bet is to stay on the alcan. I live in Fairbanks Alaska. Drove up and down the alcan and the cassiar for many years. There’s so much to see in Alaska. It’s beautiful. You’ll run into road construction at the border of Alaska and Yukon. Some construction in various other places as well. If you take the tok cutoff, be careful, the road can get “really bad”. Same from Glennallen to Valdez. Some road construction just south of Fairbanks too. Just take it slow and easy. We have a Costco up here in Fairbanks as well, pretty good prices. Expect to pay about 4.20 or more for gas, I think about 4 to 5$ for diesel. Hope you all have a really blessed trip. Enjoy, it’s a beautiful drive from sumas Washington all the way up.

Once you get to Idaho, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, June 1 is like May 1 in the midwest and South. We crossed at Coutts on June 13. It was 40 degrees, very foggy and rainy. We had 10 days of reservations in Banff and Jasper. Weather prediction was mixed precipitation for days. We canceled all the reservations and kept on driving. Lost money in cancelation fees but sitting in a camper van for days on end and unable to see the mountains, didn't appeal to us. Lesson learned. No reservations more than 5 days in advance from now on!

As a retired postmaster, please know every post office in every city in the U S is required to accepted general delivery. In large Cities, there is usually one office that provides this service. You are not required to notify them beforehand, however, a postcard notification would probably be a good idea given the confusion. The only requirement is it must be picked up before 30 days. I adore you two and I'm absolutely in love with Trinity! Safe travels.

So appreciate this! Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll add some postmasters to the Alaska postcard club! 😁 In Pecos, TX after we got our first general delivery they said any future one was going to cost us $10. General delivery is listed as an option at their location on the website (we always check). The other thing we encounter is we know a package has arrived and they go shuffle a couple of packages around and then tell us it's not there. I've had to present tracking info on multiple occasions to get them to do more than a cursory glance. Then...we have had some AMAZING experiences at the post office. A postal worker in Mackinaw City Michigan went above and beyond to help us out when some important documents didn't arrive before we left the area. Another one was so kind to give us a general delivery package on a saturday even though the office was closed but she was there sorting mail. Like anything - some people treat you like people - others like an inconvenience. -J

@@OpenRoading It makes my skin crawl that one office tried to Charge you for the service. That person needs to be fired. I'm convinced the current Postmaster General was hired to dismantle the Postal Service. He dropped delivery standards we used to live and breath by. So sad. The next time you get bad service, ask to talk to the postmaster. If I had been in an office you visited, you'd want to take me to lunch 😁. It's good for the heart to be kind to people. Side note: Idaho is one of the few states that taxes (6%) groceries. We are fighting this, but getting nothing but pushback.

If I recall right you all are new to dog ownership. Dogs often get stressed when routines are interrupted especially continuous new to them interruptions. One of my pups whom has been with me for 10 years has a keen eye for signs of moving, she is a kibble stasher when stressed and on moving day wants to sit on my feet (so not helpful). She doesn’t exhibit these stressor signs when our home moves because it’s an RV but definitely does in a house. You’ll learn Trinity’s stress signs and she’ll learn over time you won’t abandon her. Until then, maybe a stuffed toy like a Kong to distract her?

We're keeping an eye out. I honestly don't think she did this out of anxiety - but I of course can't be totally sure. We've left her before for longer with no issue. She shows now stress when we leave and doesn't go nuts when we return (I mean, she's happy...but she's not banging the door down.) I really think this was a situation where she got bored and decided to play...but like I said - I can't be fully sure and we're gonna keep our eyes open as we continue on to make sure we're not creating an anxiety problem! -J
