As online entrepreneurs, we thought, "why not work from home... on the road"? So in 2019, we bought and renovated a 2005 Jayco Designer Fifth Wheel, which took us to every state in the lower 48. But the economy hit our business especially hard after the 'vid, spurring us to pivot in new directions and try different strategies, including various RV work camping jobs!

As a certified welder, 35 year automotive technician, and retired college teacher in automotive technology, I must say I am impressed with your ability to diagnose and design a repair for the slide, considering the boundaries of your circumstances.
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 28 күн бұрын
I appreciate that. I think I got that passed down to me from my grandfather who always believed you could fix something with what you had on hand. It's a helpful ability...but it also leads you to sometimes not getting things properly fixed. 😂 (Slide still has the temp fix in it - now at least 2 months later because, hey...it's working...not need to fix it. LOL). Hopefully I didn't just remove all your respect. 🙂 -J

My Sister, who is 54, was just diagnosed with aggressive muscle invasive bladder cancer last week. She has been told she will spend the next 3 months in chemo, and will need her bladder removed and a neobladder constructed, a massive surgery. We are praying for a long, healthy life for her. She wanted to go to Alaska to visit our brand new great nephew. She wants to go to the northeast during the fall foliage, and to the ocean with friends. Her summer plans are canceled so she can hopefully have vacations and explorations next year and beyond. I just want more time with her. Time has never ticked louder for us than this. I pray you have a blessed, long and joyful life exploring together. Thank you for sharing your life with us, and this very important message.

You can do the same thing in the United States, and not have to risk bandits on the roadside or cartels stealing your RV and killing you just because. Research, crash, statistics in Mexico, particularly the area you think you want to travel to. You will change your mind. Travel to the United States. It is a huge, incredibly beautiful country.

We've been traveling the US for quite some time. While you are 100% correct that crime does happen in Mexico (and is certainly more prevelant in some areas than others) there are sections of the US that I would never consider parking the RV in for the same reasons you site.@@tominmtnvw -J

That little village relies on the tourist coming across the river. It’s very remotely located in that for most immigrants it’s too far out of the way. My daughter and a coworker were there a year ago and while talking to the villagers they really don’t tolerate anything that would jeopardize their livelihood. Her coworker is fluent in Spanish, so that really helped when they were there.

I so appreciate that you're getting so much joy out of our content. We will occasionally post a bonus episode (like the motorcycle carrier one) but I don't believe we will ever have the bandwidth to produce more than 1 per week regularly. Each video takes a minimum of 20 hours to edit (not including the planning and shooting time). This last video presented me with a lot of story telling issues in the editing process and pushed the edit time up to close to 40 hours. For us to push out multiple videos per week we would need to hire a team for post production which... totally not in the budget right now. 😂 -J

One thing I've learned (and this has been pretty recent actually) is to do research on specific areas rather than judging an entire place by what you see on TV. If someone just looked at crime rates in US cities they may consider the US to be one of the most dangerous places on earth but in reality - we know that every locality is different. Boquillas is very very safe. Like "zero instances of violent crime" safe. I could name a lot of places in the US that I would feel less safe than there. Tijuana? Nope... not going there. -J

@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 3 ай бұрын
If you get one just do your research ahead of time. This rig is 19 years old...so things are going to break. 😀 But it seems that there are some specific slides types that are prone to breaking. One of the reasons I'm working so hard to fix this one on my own is because the hardware doesn't exist anymore so to have it professionally fixed would mean having a whole new slide mechanism installed and I think this one is quite solid. -J

YOU CAN USE THE REARVIEW MIRROR! Look for a wireless rearview camera, that transmits to a clip on rearview mirror. It slips over your rearview mirror, and has a rear display in it. Just needs power at both ends, no complicated wiring. Or you csn get a wireless rearview camera that just comes with a 4" monitor to put on your dash. Again, just needs power.

Great video, curious why you don’t do Harvest Host / Boondockers Welcome as a Walmart alternative? We rarely HH but have loved BW.
@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 3 ай бұрын
We will do BW/HH if we are wanting a 2-3 night stay (but still short term). For the 1 night we will go to Walmart for a couple of reasons: First, we've found that for 1 night stopovers if we can just pull in and out of a parking lot that keeps us moving quicker and we get more rest. One of the fun things with BW/HH is getting to know the hosts and we would feel rude just pulling in, and then out the next morning with hardly as much as a "Hello! Goodbye!" Because we wanted to get as much sleep as possible. More specifically to HH, we aren't wine drinkers so the whole "Go in and buy a bottle of wine to say thank you" doesn't work for us at a lot of the wineries. 🤣 The second one is....I love shopping with the RV in the parking lot. So being able to combine the sleep-over stop with the shopping stop is such an incredible time saver WHEN we can make it happen. -J

This wasn’t what I expected at all. It’s usually people crossing in their vans. I was glad to see the dogs looked healthy and fed. I can’t wait to go to Mexico. I’ve been to countries in Europe and Africa, but never Mexico or Canada. I’m surprised your rig doesn’t have a rear camera in place of the rear view mirror. We’ve mastered the roadside fire drill, too. LOL How do you work under vehicles like that without getting tons and tons of dust and stuff in your eyes? In a video earlier, another KZfaqr said he used Mint Mobile for unlimited data. I have no idea how coverage is in different areas, though. Trusting my gut in sketchy areas is one of my big fears. My gut doesn’t work well at all. I am afraid everything will feel sketchy just because I’m afraid.

First - I just love that you left your comment this way. I'll sometimes do this with other channels as well. 😁 Most of the dogs seemed to be well fed but I also think they were all kind of "community dogs" which made me a little sad. I don't think all of them had "homes" When you go to Mexico I think you should probably do something like Baha. I don't think this gave a true mexico feel to it as much as it did "tourist trap." Our rig is a 2005 so....bells and whistles are few. 😂 As to dust in the eyes....I get dust in my eyes. 😂 Hmmm.. I assume Mint Mobile works off of either ATT, or the Tmobile network. We've been super happy with Tmobile but we just end up in some pretty remote places so the starlink has become a must for us. I'm gonna say - having a healthy fear is better than having zero fear. You can work the fear levels down a notch but if you go into crazy sketch areas and just have no fear that could lead to becoming a headline which is never good. -J

@OpenRoading
@OpenRoading 2 ай бұрын
There are many parks and trails in the US where dogs aren't allowed - but there are many where they are as well. Maybe a 50/50 split? As to leashes it's generally a common courtesy in the US to keep your dog on a leash if you are around other people and animals. Some places it's required. Personally I think it's a good courtesy - Kalyn was attacked by an off leash dog in a remote area a while back so I'm not a big fan of dogs running free and uncontrolled out of the blue. IF you have control of your dog via verbal commands then I see no issue. In our case - Trinity wouldn't attack anyone but she will sometimes "Seem aggressive" and when we are out walking we don't want to make someone else feel uncomfortable if she were to run up to them full steam. And we are still working with her on obeying commands. She also (when this video was filmed) wasn't spayed and was in heat...so...we don't accidentally want more Trinitys running around the RV. 😁 I hope that helps? -J
