Holy cow! Those prices make Alaska feel cheap. I didn’t think that was possible.

FYI - Foodland and Safeway aren't that different in the islands in terms of prices. You can usually find a few more local things at Foodland (and local things in grocery stores tend to be more expensive). The best prices are usually at farmer's markets and stuff.

We always bring our Costco card with us when we travel to Hawaii. Prices at the food court are the same as the mainland. Plus if you rent a car, it has the cheapest gas on the islands. Another option for cheap food is Walmart and ABC stores.

Definitely a helpful video to have as part of series... :) Tourist zone vs Local (suburban) usually changes prices a bit also... I like some luxuries, but will save where I can (meals at accommodation being one) to stretch for that "gotta see / do" extravagance... Daneger and Stacey have done a few of these including Zagreb (helpful since I'll be there next month)...

I live in suburban Chicago and for the last 20+ years, a gallon of milk cost between $1.99 and $2.99/gallon. (This week - May 9, 2021, it's $1.99/gallon at Tony's in Bridgeview). Large eggs are usually around a dollar/dozen.

Foodland Poke is my husband favorite. Locals normally get Poke from there. Now, in terms of shopping, most locals shop at CostCo or Walmart for their groceries. I personally like Walmart in Hawaii, because they sell unique items just for Hawaii and it is cheap. CostCo has good bulky food, but when we lived there I did not like their fresh foods, such as salads or fruits. Many times, they would be spoiled once we got home. On an extra note, for those looking for low prices souvenirs and unique items from Hawaii for low price, take one of the days that you are there and visit The Flea Market at the Aloha Stadium. You save money and get lots of interesting items from Hawaii. It is not too far from Pearl Harbor.

Glad you're enjoying Hawaii! We've only been to Maui, Kauai and Lanai and we fell in love with Kauai in 2006. Our very first trip we stayed at Hyatts Resorts and had an awesome experience with breakfast buffets included but all other meals out was very expensive and we longed to buy fresh fish to grill ourselves. Subsequently, rent VRBO condos with full kitchen, outdoor grilling pavilion, private lanai and pool with ocean views which is incredibly more relaxing and very budget friendly. Local farmer markets are not to be missed for best produce and local old Koloa town fish market is a must between 10-11 am before you hit the beaches for fresh morning caught fish! Best suggest I can offer as we travel on mainland 4-6 months per year with an Airstream, is don't forget to take the time to obtain Safeway and other grocery store savings cards for best savings. Also, if you enjoy evening happy hours buy some POG ( pineapple, orange, guava) juice like the locals to mix with vodka/rum for great drink at reasonable cost.

We fell in love with Kauai on our first trip in 2017. The only thing keeping us from moving there is the high housing costs. A 2bed, in not great condition, runs for about $450k 😬 We learned from our friends who live there that going out to eat is a treat. It's way more affordable to buy in bulk (Costco) and make your own meals. A dozen eggs here is 79¢, bananas are 39¢/lb, milk is $2.29/gal, and wheat bread is 89¢ And we bought our 3bed/3bath house in a beautiful community for 90k. We'll probably stick to vacationing in Hawaii.

as a guy that used to work for Foodland, the Poke there is top tier for a grocery store and a lot cheaper than some of the "specialty" poke places on the island. fruits and veggies go to Safeway for the regular stuff like apples, oranges, bananas and the like, but go to Foodland for the more ethnic foods and ingredients, if you need the really deep cut asian ingredients you either hit up chinatown for Chinese and Don Quixote for the Japanese.

Wow, Hawaii is sooo expensive compared to Toronto Canada, I can tell you that we exactly pay half the price for apples, bananas, bread, cereal and eggs; and about 1/3 the price for milk and cheese. Wine and liquor is the only thing that is cheaper in Hawaii - which i think is nuts. Thanks for showing us this video, I feel better about my grocery bill now haha

Notice all the Foodland articles' shelf tags state "maka`i special" meaning you have to have a makai`i card (which visitors do not have) to get that lower price-otherwise the price is preposterous. Those of us who live here have had a good laugh at these mainlanders' claims that Foodland is cheaper than Safeway-no way. Pay no attention to this utterly misleading video. Shop instead at Costco or Walmart for lower prices.

I was interested in moving to Hawaii. It seemed like rent was less than California. It does seem like groceries were higher. That is strange. In California only the rent and gas prices are higher. Everything else was the same. It's strange that grocery prices are higher. Is the price of anything else higher?

Milk at that price is reasonable to us here in Hawaii. The sad thing is that the milk from the local dairy charges about 1.5x the amount of the mainland milk that comes here and is sold for $5.49 for a gallon on average. The lase remaining dairy farm on the Big Island just closed down due to economics...no more local milk..that is sad. Of the 3 largest supermarkets on Oahu, Times Supermarkets are the least costly of the three (Safeway, Foodland and Times- Foodland and Times are local companies). But Foodland has that Poke Bowl with the hot rice, and yes they always get referred to as the 'Best Poke in Hawaii' or regarded as one of the best !

I think a lot of the prices also depend on where you are and on which island. I'm on the Hilo side of the Big Island and Foodland and KTA are usually the least expensive grocery stores. But I bet in more touristy parts of the state, they're more expensive. Generally, I'd suggest visitors go to those two over Safeway (Foodland especially for the poke and wakame salads!!)
